{"id":331501,"date":"2025-12-05T18:40:56","date_gmt":"2025-12-05T18:40:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peraltafinancing.com\/recipes\/category-a-b\/beer\/jazz-age-glamour-or-just-another-type-of-boozer\/"},"modified":"2025-12-05T18:40:56","modified_gmt":"2025-12-05T18:40:56","slug":"jazz-age-glamour-or-just-another-type-of-boozer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fivemor.com\/?p=331501","title":{"rendered":"jazz age glamour, or just another type of boozer?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"has-large-font-size\"><strong>The modern idea of the prohibition-era speakeasy is distorted via cinematic fantasies of the jazz age and by hipsterish cocktail bars.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In reality, it seems they were often pretty seedy places \u2013 as you might expect when (a) they weren\u2019t really supposed to exist; (b) were entangled with organised crime; and (c) could only sell smuggled booze.<\/p>\n<p>John O\u2019Hara\u2019s 1935 novel <em>BUtterfield 8<\/em> (the upper case U is correct) was written just as prohibition was coming to an end and feels like a conscious effort to document the era.<\/p>\n<p>It tells the story of Gloria Wandrous, a promiscuous 18-year-old who picks up men across New York City. A large chunk of the action takes place in one speakeasy or other, with a remarkable amount of space being dedicated to recording details of their atmosphere and operation.<\/p>\n<p>For example, there\u2019s a nameless speakeasy on Fortieth Street which is described as follows:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>They went.. up a winding staircase. They were admitted after being peered at, it turned out, by a man with a superb case of acne rosacea\u2026 It was the longest bar in New York in those days, and the room was bare except for the absolute essentials. One half of it held tables and chairs and a mechanical piano, but there was one half in front of the bar which was bare concrete floor.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The word \u201cbare\u201d is repeated twice, once in reference to \u201cbare concrete\u201d. This hardly sounds like the stuff to excite Baz Luhrmann, the consummate maximalist.<\/p>\n<p>Another speakeasy Gloria visits is described as \u201ca converted carriage house, with no character except that\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Later in the novel we get a list of Gloria\u2019s favourite speakeasies, the names of which are admittedly evocative:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>The Dizzy Club, the Hotsy-Totsy, Tommy Guinan\u2019s Chez Florence, the Type &amp; Print Club, the Basque\u2019s, Michel\u2019s, Tony\u2019s East Fifty-third Street, Tony\u2019s West Forty-ninth Street, Forty-two West Forty-nine, the Aquarium, Mario\u2019s, the Clamhouse, the Bandbox, the West Forty-fourth Street Club, McDermott\u2019s, the Sligo Slasher\u2019s, the Newswriters\u2019, Billy Duffy\u2019s, Jack Delaney\u2019s, Sam Schwartz\u2019s, the Richmond, Frank &amp; Jack\u2019s, Frankie &amp; Johnny\u2019s, Felix\u2019s, Louis\u2019, Phyllis\u2019s, Twenty-one West Fifty-third, Marlborough House \u2013 these were places where she was known by name and sight, where she awed the bartenders by the amount she drank.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>You might think that\u2019s quite a lot of establishments given that they were supposed to be illegal but one estimate reckons <a href=\"https:\/\/nymag.com\/intelligencer\/2017\/11\/new-yorks-most-infamous-speakeasies.html\">New York had 32,000 speakeasies in around 1930<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>That article explains how many speakeasies were \u201chole-in-the-walls\u201d. Crime scene photos from the New York Police Department archives <a href=\"https:\/\/www.archives.nyc\/blog\/2019\/3\/8\/prohibition\">shared by the NYC Department of Records &amp; Information Services<\/a> give us a sense of what that meant. They look dirty, untidy, unsanitary and not a little bleak \u2013 like very basic beerhouses, only without even the benefit of natural light.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"489\" src=\"https:\/\/boakandbailey.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/nypd_archive_speakeasy.jpg\" alt=\"A seedy, dirty looking bar with grot on the floor and dust and filth on every surface.\" class=\"wp-image-27930\" srcset=\"https:\/\/boakandbailey.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/nypd_archive_speakeasy.jpg 650w, https:\/\/boakandbailey.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/nypd_archive_speakeasy-300x226.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">NYPD 8051c, NYPD Collection, NYC Municipal Archives.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>But, just as pubs come in many shapes and sizes, so did speakeasies. In his novel, O\u2019Hara explains how the speakeasy evolved in its final phase, at the beginning of the 1930s:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>They went to a lot of speakeasies, especially to the then new kind, as it was the beginning of the elaborate era. From serving furtive drinks of bad liquor disguised as demi-tasse the speakeasy had progressed to whole town houses, with uniformed pages and cigarette girls, a string orchestra and a four- or five-piece Negro band for dancing, free hors d\u2019\u0153uvres, four and five bartenders, silver-plated keys and other souvenir-admittance tokens to regular patrons, expensive entertainment, Cordon Bleu chefs, engraved announcements in pretty good taste, intricate accounting systems and business machinery \u2013 all a very good and, because of the competition, necessary front for the picturesque and deadly business of supplying liquor at huge financial profit powerful radio stations, powerful speedboats and other craft not unlike the British \u2018Q\u2019 ships, powerful weapons against highjackers, powerful connexions in the right places. And often very good liquor and enough good wine to set in front of the people who knew good wine and still cared about it.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>This more elaborate model feels closer to the speakeasy of modern popular imagination.<\/p>\n<p>Speakeasies are these days associated primarily with cocktails and O\u2019Hara\u2019s characters certainly drink plenty of those, along with spirits in various configurations. If you\u2019ve got to smuggle booze, spirits offer greater bang for your buck, after all.<\/p>\n<p>Gloria Wandrous does drink a little beer, though, ordering an \u201cale\u201d in one speakeasy: \u201cShe gulped some beer and left some in the glass. \u2018That\u2019s all I want.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The great selling point of O\u2019Hara\u2019s novel was its frankness, not only about sexuality but also about other matters. So, finally, that gives us something quite unusual \u2013 notes on the qualities of speakeasy toilets:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>She had used toilets in speakeasies where to breathe the air seemed pretty risky. But there was something intimate about a speakeasy in the family. No one who went to the same speakeasy as you did would be so mean as to give you something. That was almost the way she felt about speakeasy toilets; but she always took elaborate precautions anyway.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>They don\u2019t show you that in <em>The Great Gatsby<\/em>, do they?
