I grew up with a tough name.<\/strong> Siobhan Adcock. Look at it. There\u2019s almost no part of that name that\u2019s not sort-of a pain in the ass.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">2.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><strong style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">People don\u2019t tend to remember it, and when they do, they can\u2019t pronounce it. <\/strong><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">Siobhan is an Irish name \u2014 it means Jane, or Joan, or Joanne, or if you\u2019re feeling like a sparkly unicorn fairy, \u201csea foam blowing off the waves.\u201d My father told me (incorrectly as it turns out) that it means \u201cQueen of the Emerald Isles.\u201d He and my mother had heard of it by way of Siobhan McKenna, the famous Irish stage actress who was in <\/span><em style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">Dr. Zhivago<\/em><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">. (But not the famously beautiful actress who was in <em>Dr. Zhivago<\/em>. And also not the second-most beautiful actress in <\/span><em style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">Dr. Zhivago<\/em><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">. The other one.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>3.\u00a0My father\u2019s name, by the way, was Dick.<\/strong> They don\u2019t really name kids that anymore. Especially with a last name like Adcock. Dick Adcock, Jr. Because his father\u2019s name was also Richard. So when my dad was growing up, there was Big Dick Adcock and Little Dick Adcock. No one, apparently, in the early 1950s, thought that was a problem.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">4.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><strong style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">When I was a kid there was this, um, spread?<\/strong><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\"> Like an oleo type of thing? , as in light and silky. Chiffon had probably one of the catchier two-word jingles of the \u201870s and early \u201980s: \u201cIt\u2019s\u2026Chiffon!\u201d Every time I got on the school bus, I had to be announced. By everyone. Often in five-point harmony. \u201cIt\u2019s\u2026Sio-ffan!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"70s Mother Nature *Chiffon* Margarine Commercial\" width=\"840\" height=\"630\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/LLrTPrp-fW8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">5. Since my last name starts with an A, every year on the first day of school, I was inevitably the first name on the roll to be called.<\/strong><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\"> The fresh shiny new roll. Oh, my teachers. I pitied them. Here it was, the beginning of a new school year, the school year they wouldn\u2019t fuck up or make embarrassing mistakes on the first day, and you could just see their fresh, young, expectant faces crumple and fall when they realized they weren\u2019t even going to be able to get past the first name on the roll call without asking for help.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019d usually let them suffer in silence for a second or two, squinting and frowning down at the list of names, and then mutter, \u201cHere. I\u2019m here. It\u2019s me. Siobhan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ultimately you have to make it easy on people.<\/p>\n<p><strong>6. When I go to a restaurant and leave my name for a table, I tell them I\u2019m Suzanne.<\/strong> Or Sabrina. Or Soybean. All actual pronunciation attempts I have heard.<\/p>\n<p><strong>7. You<\/strong><strong style=\"line-height: 1.5;\"> can imagine what I tell baristas.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">8.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><strong style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">I long ago arrived at a formula <\/strong><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">for how to respond when I\u2019m asked to spell my name, for a form or an order or any baffled clipboard holder:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cS-i-o. (Pause here.) B as in Boy. (Another pause.) h-a-n. Last name: A-d-<em>c<\/em> (Emphasize the c. Then a long, long pause here, almost long enough to make them think you\u2019re done, before the finale.) o-c-k.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>About fifty percent of the time, I get: \u201cA-d what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cC-O-C-K. COCK! COCK!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCock?\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">9.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><strong style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">And then I went into digital publishing,<\/strong><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\"> primarily at women\u2019s websites, and as such, I\u2019ve had a lot of awesome email addresses:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>sadcock@women.com<\/p>\n<p>sadcock@ivillage.com<\/p>\n<p>sadcock@theknot.com<\/p>\n<p>All the places a cock could ostensibly be sad, I have worked at.<\/p>\n<p><strong>10. I<\/strong><strong style=\"line-height: 1.5;\"> imagine other people with \u201ccock\u201d in their last names also have this problem<\/strong><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">, but I\u2019ve discovered that I actually can\u2019t register for a new email address with my real name anymore, because it sets off a spam filter, and I\u2019m asked to \u201cchoose another name.\u201d (<\/span><em style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">You<\/em><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\"> choose another name, Yahoo!)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">11.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><strong style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">My sister, Gillian Adcock,<\/strong><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\"> has for many years been a teacher in hospital schools for teenagers whose zoned public schools are out of the question for them for a variety of really terrible, sad, personal reasons: behavioral problems, home environment problems, learning disabilities, flat-out poverty and often uniquely shitty combinations of all these things.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Anyway, as a teacher at this school she kept her last name a secret \u2014 she had to. For all these loveable fuckup teenagers, she was only ever \u201cMiss A\u201d for <em>years<\/em>, until she got married and then became Mrs. Fletcher. I mean, can you imagine? What a roomful of teenagers would do with something like \u201cMiss Adcock\u201d?<\/p>\n<p>Actually, maybe she should have let them have at it. I don\u2019t think they have much joy in that place.<\/p>\n<p><strong>12.\u00a0When I got married, I had the opportunity, at last, to change my last name.<\/strong> I went to the marriage license place in downtown Brooklyn with my soon-to-be husband, whose last name is innocuous and contains no filthy words. I probably could have changed my first name too while I was at it, nobody in that office seems like they\u2019re paying a whole lot of attention. But I didn\u2019t. Looking down at the form I understood that I didn\u2019t want to. My father died when I was in college, and we\u2019re not in great touch with what\u2019s left of his side of the family, and I didn\u2019t want the Adcocks, our Adcocks, the Adcocks with the balls to name their children ridiculous things like \u201cDick\u201d \u2014 twice \u2014 and then later \u201cSiobhan\u201d \u2014 to perish from this Earth. I kept my name.<\/p>\n<p>I am also lazy and didn\u2019t want to deal with a lot of paperwork.<\/p>\n<p>Adcock it is, then. Forever.<\/p>\n<p><strong>13.<\/strong>\u00a0<strong style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">I always thought that when I finally had a kid I\u2019d name her Jane, or Kate, or Mary.<\/strong><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\"> But I didn\u2019t. We gave out daughter a name that combined our grandmothers\u2019 names. It\u2019s phonetic, at least, but it\u2019s not super-recognizable or common. You don\u2019t actually want a common name, I\u2019ve found. After 40-plus years as Siobhan Adcock (God, when you say it out loud, there\u2019s even the suggestion of \u201cnads\u201d in there \u2014 it really might be the second filthiest name ever, after Big Dick Adcock), I now know that an uncommon name gives you something to live up to, and that\u2019s both a challenge and a stroke of luck. So we gave her a name that people will ask her annoying questions about all her life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>14.\u00a0<\/strong><strong style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">When I was in college, I worked at the library.<\/strong><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\"> And one day, this guy came in. And he checked out some books.
