Frequently I get responses similar to the those below:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>We just aren\u2019t as worried about privacy as you are.<\/li>\n<li>I lead a law-abiding life, follow rules, and have nothing to hide. Who cares.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>But the fact is, the world is interested in each of us, and the way they find out about us is through tracking what we do and say on the web, on our phones, through every single thing we purchase, and every place we go (even if we have location mostly turned off). Even our car computers collect and share information on us. It\u2019s been this way for a long time. \u00a0I even wrote a post, <a href=\"https:\/\/mediatechparenting.net\/2013\/08\/09\/privacy-ive-got-nothing-to-hide-so-im-not-worried\/\">I\u2019ve Got Nothing to Hide So I\u2019m Not Worried<\/a>, way back in 2013.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"more-21608\"\/>Two eye-opening New York Times articles,\u00a0<span class=\"balancedHeadline\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/11\/24\/smarter-living\/privacy-online-how-to-stop-advertiser-tracking-opt-out.html?smid=nytcore-ios-share\">You\u2019re Tracked Everywhere You Go Online. Use This Guide to Fight Back<\/a>\u00a0by Tim Herrera and\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"balancedHeadline\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/11\/04\/business\/secret-consumer-score-access.html\">I Got Access to My Secret Consumer Score. Now You Can Get Yours, Too<\/a>\u00a0by Kashmir Hill describe in intricate detail just how much detailed information is amassed about each of us. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"balancedHeadline\">So intricate is the information, in fact, that when Hill ordered a personal file from Sift, a company that rates credit-worthiness and generates personal scores, it was 400 pages long. Included were a wide range of personal messages, information about restaurant and takeout orders, specifics about logging in and out of cell phone apps, and even what, and even what device was used for what activity \u2014 400 pages.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Hill explains how to get your personal file from Sift. That, however, is only one company. \u00a0Other identified companies are \u00a0Zeta Global, Retail Equation, Riskified, and Kustomer.<\/p>\n<p>In his article Tim Herrera, who was inspired by what Hill discovered, explains how just about every company that we use aggregates our data and shares it \u2014 companies such as Verizon, AT&amp;T, Target, our banks, and others. He includes helpful links that a reader can use to contact the companies and request that they stop sharing personal information.<\/p>\n<p>Right now in the United States, few digital privacy protections exist, though some individual states like California are attempting to tighten the reins. Legislators in Washington DC are discussing privacy policy, but not much is developing out of those conversations.<\/p>\n<p>Most of us will continue to make purchases online, use apps, and enjoy our devices.
