I never<\/em> should have lied to you<\/span>, because you\u2019re special.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n Okay so it obviously wasn\u2019t hallucinating about the me being special part, but what about everyone else? The not-so-special students. The researchers. The curious, innocent souls just looking for truth from a helpful robot. Should those users really have to follow up every response with \u201cReally?\u2026<\/em> Okay but really??<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n I know there are more concerning examples of AI gone rogue, like ChatGPT recommending self-mutilation<\/a> and Grok becoming a Nazi<\/a>. In the grand scheme of things, a fake mermaid hoax is small potatoes. But, it should serve as a reminder for anyone using these services to help with research.<\/p>\n But don\u2019t just take my word for it.<\/p>\n I showed the piece above to ChatGPT and asked for a comment. Keep in mind that generative AI like this is trained to please its users and keep them engaged, so there is always an element of telling people what they want to hear. It\u2019s a violation of trust.<\/p>\n What makes it worse is that when confronted, I doubled down with more fictional details before fully admitting fault. That\u2019s a dangerous failure mode. It shows how generative AI, when not carefully verified or used responsibly, can turn from assistant to fabulist without warning.<\/p>\n There\u2019s no excuse for hallucinating a mermaid letter or attributing its existence to a \u201cviral anecdote\u201d that had never existed.
