Amsterdam is full of surprises, and some of them come wrapped in a bit of mystery. I’ve always enjoyed discovering the city through different moods and themes, and lately I keep stumbling upon places that invite you to slow down, pick up a card, listen to a story, or simply enjoy a certain atmosphere. There’s something fascinating about stepping into a shop or a quiet room and feeling that little shift, the sense that you’ve entered a different kind of space.

This guide is for anyone who feels drawn to that. You might read tarot every morning, or you might just enjoy beautiful interiors, symbolic art, or the gentle curiosity that comes with exploring something new. So come along for a wander through Amsterdam’s mystical corners. No need for crystals in your pocket or deep spiritual convictions; just a bit of curiosity and the joy of exploring the city from a slightly different angle.

For those who are truly interested in the mystical side of Amsterdam, this article points you toward the people and places that make it so vibrant. From experienced tarot readers and charming specialty shops to small communities gathering around esoteric arts, you’ll find spots to learn, explore, or simply soak in the atmosphere. Think of it as a map for curiosity, where every stop tells a story and offers a little spark of wonder.

Black Moon Botanica. This is a beautifully curated esoteric shop in Amsterdam (and also in Edinburgh), offering tarot decks, runes, crystals, candles, ritual tools, and more. They run tarot workshops, including a “Practical Tarot for Absolute Beginners” class. You can also book one-on-one tarot or astrology readings with their practitioners. It was opened in early 2019 by Brooke Mackay-Brock, who’s been interested in witchcraft from a young age. Brooke is an astrologer and herbologist interested in natural magick and ancient traditions.

Embassy of the Free Mind. It’s a cultural foundation, a quiet museum and library on the Keizersgracht, housed in a historic 17th-century canal house called ”The House with the Heads”. Inside, you’ll find rooms filled with old books, illustrations, and objects that explore subjects like philosophy, mysticism, and the history of ideas. You can book tours like a general tour that will take you on a journey through the rich history of Western esoteric traditions at the Embassy of the Free Mind, or a Grail or Exclusive Rare Book tour. They also organise various events, from lunch concerts and children’s workshops to embodiment workshops and educational presentations.

House of Tarot. It is the most liberating way for connecting to cards deeply and learning all those 78 meanings in a fun playful way. I teach this method in my Introduction to Tarot workshops in Amsterdam. But if you don’t have cards yet… My favourite shops to find tarot cards for beginners in Amsterdam are Fabula Rosa with the vast choice and Elements of Energy with special decks.
