He pointed to the airport\u2019s age, layout, and longstanding operational challenges, arguing that major upgrades are overdue.\u00a0\u00a0<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>Trump said his administration plans to \u201crebuild\u201d the airport and transform it into a facility that better reflects the region it serves, describing the main terminal as an iconic building saddled with what he views as outdated and inefficient infrastructure.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was incorrectly designed with a good building.\u00a0Actually, it\u2019s\u00a0got a beautiful terminal\u2026 one of the greatest architects in the world at the time,\u201d Trump said, referring to Eero Saarinen\u2019s 1962 main terminal. \u201cAnd\u00a0so\u00a0they have a great building and a bad airport, but we\u2019re going to\u00a0turn that around.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Saarinen\u2019s sweeping concrete terminal\u00a0remains\u00a0one of the most recognized designs in\u00a0US\u00a0airport architecture. But the airport\u2019s original concept \u2014 built around a fleet of mobile lounges that ferried passengers between the terminal and midfield ramps \u2014 has struggled to keep pace with the region\u2019s growth and current airline operations. While Dulles later added underground trains and traditional concourses, a fleet of mobile lounges and \u201cplane mates\u201d is still used for international arrivals and connections.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Trump said his administration intends to move quickly. \u201cWe\u2019re going to\u00a0make Dulles Airport serving Washington and Virginia, Maryland, etcetera\u2026 into something really spectacular,\u201d he said.\u00a0\u201cWe have an amazing plan for it.\u201d\u00a0<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>The airport sits about 30 miles from downtown\u00a0Washington, D.C., and\u00a0handled more than\u00a025 million passengers\u00a0last year.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy also highlighted a recent incident involving one of Dulles\u2019 mobile lounges. The crash, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aerotime.aero\/articles\/18-injured-mobile-lounge-hits-dock-dulles-airport\" rel=\"nofollow\" title=\"\">which injured 18 people<\/a>, renewed criticism of the aging vehicles and prompted calls for their retirement. Duffy said the Department of Transportation will soon begin\u00a0soliciting\u00a0bids related to improvements.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe had a crash recently,\u201d Duffy said. \u201cWe\u2019re\u00a0going to\u00a0announce later today the request for bids on this. But again,\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0not a great airport, which we can make great in this administration.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Trump\u2019s nominee to the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority (MWAA) board, Trent Morse, has already said publicly that he intends to push for phasing out the mobile lounges. MWAA operates both Reagan National Airport and Dulles.\u00a0<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>Trump will undoubtedly draw on his long background as a commercial real-estate developer as he turns his focus to Dulles. Before entering politics, he oversaw major projects ranging from the redevelopment of New York City\u2019s aging Commodore Hotel into the glass-and-steel Grand Hyatt to the reconstruction of Central Park\u2019s Wollman Rink, a project he likes to remind people he completed ahead of schedule and under budget.\u00a0\u00a0<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>He has often argued that poorly designed public facilities can be fixed with decisive action, a point he has made for decades \u2014 including his critique of New York\u2019s Jacob K. Javits Convention Center, which he has said was \u201cbuilt backwards\u201d because its dramatic glass fa\u00e7ade faces 11th Avenue rather than the panorama of the Hudson River.
