Anger in the first responder and veteran community can be best described as a blazing, burning inferno of an emotion.<\/strong><\/h4>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

What happens if you throw any object into a blazing fire inferno regardless of what they are?\u00a0 They\u2019re burned up and consumed.<\/p>\n

This can also be said for anger a lot of veterans and first responders \u2013 including myself experience.\u00a0 The intense heat washes over, and it can be a bad, nasty, uncontrollable mess of destruction. It\u2019s why a lot of us choose to be alone, or distanced from society.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

This Isn\u2019t The Way. <\/strong><\/h4>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

I\u2019m going to level with everyone reading this: it never goes away. I can still go from 0 \u2013 1000 instantly.\u00a0 Over the years I\u2019ve just learned to recognize it faster, and learned to get a much better lid on it.\u00a0 It still can end up being a runaway however.<\/p>\n

Raise your hand if you\u2019ve lost your temper and almost immediately regretted it.\u00a0 How many times are you willing to let that continue?<\/p>\n

There are many reasons that happens.\u00a0 Our cognitive bandwidth could be full, and having to make a bunch more decisions about something can set it off.\u00a0 People don\u2019t meet our expectations, or act in a way that seems blatantly idiotic.\u00a0 Theres\u2019s also a magnified effect of having a tuned up nervous system making us hyper responsive.\u00a0 Why this is important to know is that we over analyze for threats.\u00a0 The immediate and ingrained response is to fight or attack \u2013 anger helps to fuel that response to levels we need when facing danger.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s the bad shit out of the way. There are ways to lessen it that I have found to be helpful.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Fighting the Fire With Many Extinguishers.<\/strong><\/h4>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

The good news: this thing can be controlled to a degree.\u00a0 The bad news: you\u2019ll have to remain forever vigilant for flare ups.\u00a0 Here are some things I have found to be helpful.<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Get Out of the Fucking House!\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong> Stuck with our own self-defeating thoughts, feeding back into the cycle of perpetual self torment is no way to live.\u00a0 If we have no other reference point, we only have our own with the perspective up to where it is.\u00a0 Trust me, I know how hard this is.\u00a0 After my deployment and subsequent release, I stayed in the house for the better part of a year.\u00a0 Looking back, I wasted a year in getting back into the fight.\u00a0 It doesn\u2019t mean getting out and going on a sensory-overloading adventure every day.\u00a0 Even just a small trip to be with those around you, or do something minor or constructive.\"Campfire\"<\/li>\n
  2. Never Stop Learning.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>Learning more about the world we inhabit helps us to respond, or act on emotional impulses less.\u00a0 \u201cHypervigilance\u201d is a very common term used to describe people from the veteran and first responder community who have high levels of anxiety paired with combat readiness.\u00a0 Repeated exposure to danger wires this part of the brain and nervous system to a more default \u201con\u201d state.\u00a0 A personal note on this one, I became more aware of this by watching my cat.\u00a0 He is half wild, and very skittish by nature.\u00a0 He has high levels of anxiety, because he lives in an eat or be eaten type of mindset.\u00a0 We become the same way because we live in the same type of environment of perpetual survival and fighting.\u00a0 I\u2019ve studied a LOT of human behavior and psychology over the last few years.\u00a0 The good news?\u00a0 We become better at identifying threats, respond more appropriately (at least more than before) to behaviors or people without blowing up quite as much.\u00a0 The bad news?\u00a0 That nervous system seems to stay wired up on high alert.\u00a0 Which leads to the next topic point.<\/li>\n
  3. Physical Fitness is Required.<\/strong> \u00a0If you\u2019re in an occupation where other\u2019s safety depends on you, why aren\u2019t you keeping yourself fit?\u00a0 Being fit gives control and influence over our immediate environment and outcomes.\u00a0 That may make the difference between life and death and are you willing to live with losing someone over personal neglect?\u00a0 Fitness also gets rid of stress hormones.\u00a0 Discharge the nervous system as much as possible, daily even.<\/li>\n
  4. \u00a0Find Others to Talk With.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>The internet is vast, and identifiable groups are many.\u00a0 See if you can start a conversation in one of them from common ground.\u00a0 Friendships grow from there.\"Canadian<\/li>\n
  5. Make Friends Outside of Your Usual Circle. <\/strong>This is asking a lot, but it can be helpful.\u00a0 Watching others operate in their degree of \u201cnormal\u201d is a great way to find the centerline of balance.\u00a0 They may not be as aware of things, or on point for danger, but will show a much more relaxed demeanor in their daily dealings.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    These are a few suggestions I have found that help \u201ctake the edge\u201d off the ugly insanity of a bad temper that just won\u2019t seem to go away.\u00a0 It doesn\u2019t \u201cfix\u201d the issue, but it definitely helps in not reacting outwardly as much.<\/p>\n
