Using reliable sources, we can fairly quickly assess a person\u2019s behavior and the impact it has on others. Some believe that ethics is too complex to be readily assessed, but\u00a0<strong>the research agrees in a number of important areas.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The five behaviors that follow are hallmarks of unethical leadership. Spotting\u00a0any one of them\u00a0is all that is needed to identify unethical leadership in action.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>5 Hallmarks of Unethical Leadership<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>1. SERVES SELF FIRST<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Cares about self-interest more than other-interest. Values the spotlight and looks for ways to present self as better than others.<\/li>\n<li>Looks for quick wins without considering their long-term harmful impact. Sees self as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2019\/04\/the-psychology-behind-unethical-behavior\">above the rules<\/a>\u00a0that apply to others.<\/li>\n<li>Seeks the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pon.harvard.edu\/daily\/batna\/10-hardball-tactics-in-negotiation\/\">upper hand<\/a>\u00a0rather than working with others collaboratively.<\/li>\n<li>Overly concerned about\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.inc.com\/jim-schleckser\/how-best-businesspeople-quickly-identify-an-unethical-person.html\">being taken advantage of\u00a0<\/a>and stays on the offensive.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>2. HARMS OTHERS THROUGH NEGATIVE INTERPERSONAL BEHAVIOR<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Makes\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/why-powerful-people-fail-to-stop-bad-behavior-by-their-underlings-73828\">power<\/a>\u00a0and control more important than respect and civility.<\/li>\n<li>Doesn\u2019t honor boundaries of expected interpersonal behavior.<\/li>\n<li>Uses\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/full\/10.1080\/10999922.2019.1667666#:~:text=Unethical%20leadership%20refers%20to%20leader,new%20avenues%20for%20future%20research.\">words or actions that harm<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 threatens, belittles,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/pdf\/10.1177\/0170840613511924\">blames<\/a>, name calls, shames, physically or emotionally harms others.<\/li>\n<li>Reactive. Doesn\u2019t think through or doesn\u2019t care about the possible impacts of words used. Defends right to say whatever comes to mind.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>3. INVITES OTHERS TO TAKE ACTIONS THAT HARM<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Communicates in threats to get a reaction with or without the intention to follow through. Relies on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.intechopen.com\/books\/dark-sides-of-organizational-behavior-and-leadership\/toxic-leadership-the-most-menacing-form-of-leadership\">fear<\/a>\u00a0to gain the upper hand.<\/li>\n<li>Welcomes behaviors that harm from others and may see them as validating the leader\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/pdf\/10.1177\/0170840613511924\">own behaviors that harm<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Stirs up conflict and\/or incites violence.<\/li>\n<li>Refuses to apologize when others complain about being harmed, which creates the appearance of condoning harmful behavior from others.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>4. FAILS TO RESPECT DIFFERENCES<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/personal-growth\/leadership-is-the-best-way-to-divide-or-unite-565f2aa78752\">Divides people<\/a>\u00a0into good and bad categories or \u201cin\u201d and \u201cout\u201d groups and treats them accordingly.<\/li>\n<li>Uses negative labels to isolate and divide people.<\/li>\n<li>Treats\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/leadingincontext.com\/2019\/09\/11\/unethical-leadership-selective-respect\/\">some groups of people who are different<\/a>\u00a0as objects, less than human, less than equal, dangerous or needing to be isolated.<\/li>\n<li>Claims to respect differences because of having worked with a few people who are not \u201clike me.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>5. DEFLECTS RESPONSIBILITY<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Ignores expected leadership and forges own path that takes a detour around ethics. Looks for ways to avoid difficult but important leadership roles or tasks and take shortcuts, believing the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ethicssage.com\/2018\/04\/do-the-ends-justify-the-means.html\">ends justify the means.<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Uses name-calling and blaming to deflect attention from bad decisions or ethical mistakes.<\/li>\n<li>Avoids transparency, withholds information.<\/li>\n<li>Doesn\u2019t accept accountability for ethics, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/media.terry.uga.edu\/socrates\/publications\/2013\/05\/Brown__Mitchell_2010_Ethical_and_unethical_leadership_BEQ.pdf\">extends the same exception to other insiders<\/a>\u00a0who make ethical mistakes, saying they\u2019ve done nothing wrong.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>5 Hallmarks of Ethical Leadership<\/strong>\u00a0(In Contrast)<\/h3>\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>SERVES OTHERS BEFORE SELF<\/li>\n<li>SUPPORTS OTHERS THROUGH POSITIVE INTERPERSONAL BEHAVIOR<\/li>\n<li>AVOIDS HARM<\/li>\n<li>SHOWS RESPECT TO EVERYONE<\/li>\n<li>TAKES FULL RESPONSIBILITY<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>We can do an exhaustive study of ethical theory and talk all day about what different ethics terms mean, but I believe it\u2019s much more productive to look for these five signs of unethical leadership. When choosing leaders in any setting, see how many hallmarks of unethical leadership you can spot.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Unethical leaders may look good on paper, but be careful.<\/strong>\u00a0They can inflict tremendous long-term damage on people, groups and organizations.
