Airbus said it has updated the ground-engine operating procedure for icing conditions, a change intended to reduce the risk of performance degradation during the most severe winter weather.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The situation\u00a0first\u00a0gained attention after Air Astana, the flag carrier of Kazakhstan, experienced weather-related delays at Almaty Airport on November 15, 2025.\u00a0The airline told passengers that departures on its Airbus Neo\u00a0aircraft\u00a0would be affected due to freezing fog. In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aerotelegraph.com\/flugzeuge\/airbus-a320-neo-mit-triebwerken-von-pratt-und-whitney-machen-bei-schlechtem\/2cb9btz\" rel=\"nofollow\" title=\"\">statement to\u00a0news outlet\u00a0aeroTelegraph<\/a>, Air Astana said that under freezing fog and sub-zero temperatures, heavy engine icing can impair\u00a0performance, and\u00a0noted that the issue affects only the Pratt &amp; Whitney\u00a0geared turbofan\u00a0engines installed on\u00a0A320neo-family\u00a0aircraft.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Air Astana confirmed\u00a0the restriction applies to its A320neo, A321neo, and A321LR\u00a0aircraft. According to publicly available fleet data cited by\u00a0aeroTelegraph, the airline\u00a0operates\u00a011 A320neos, four A321neos, and 13 A321LRs. Its low-cost subsidiary Fly Arystan also has\u00a013\u00a0inactive A320neos powered by Pratt &amp; Whitney engines, though those\u00a0aircraft\u00a0have been grounded for other issues including\u00a0powdered-metal\u00a0contamination and engine-shop bottlenecks.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>An Airbus spokesperson told\u00a0news outlets\u00a0the company has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/aerospace-defense\/airbus-limits-cold-weather-takeoffs-with-pratt-whitney-engines-2025-11-28\/\" rel=\"nofollow\" title=\"\">issued instructions covering revised\u00a0engine-operation\u00a0procedures<\/a> on the ground in icing conditions and confirmed that the update leads to takeoff restrictions in freezing fog. Pratt &amp; Whitney also confirmed\u00a0that Airbus has imposed the limitation for A320neo-family\u00a0aircraft\u00a0equipped with GTF engines, describing it as a temporary restriction until a permanent solution is available. The engine maker said it does not expect a major impact on winter operations for most carriers.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A320neo-family jets equipped with CFM International LEAP-1A engines are not affected.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>While Air Astana has publicly highlighted the challenge due to its winter climate, several other airlines in cold-weather regions operate A320neo-family\u00a0aircraft\u00a0with Pratt &amp; Whitney engines, including Finnair, SAS, and Lufthansa. These carriers could also face weather-related complexity during periods of freezing fog and low visibility.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Airbus said it\u00a0remains\u00a0in close contact with its airline customers\u00a0as\u00a0Pratt &amp; Whitney continues working on a longer-term fix.
