But walking around the city center or down Elland Road on gameday there\u2019s no avoiding the signs of a growing American influence. Leeds United fans wear Major League Baseball caps and US men\u2019s national team jerseys. Americans\u2019 names have earned their ways onto on the backs of replica kits, and stars and stripes bedeck (perhaps even spangle) the souvenir scarves of manager Jesse Marsch \u2014 proud son of Racine, Wisconsin.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wysiwyg__change\" data-aos=\"fade-up\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/www.whatahowler.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Howler-Leeds-United-image1-1620x1080--1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-23741\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">On the stadium concourse, Mark Russell wore a San Francisco 49ers sweatshirt. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wysiwyg__paragraph\" data-aos=\"fade-up\">\n<div class=\"wysiwyg__inner\">\n<p>On the stadium concourse, Mark Russell wore a San Francisco 49ers sweatshirt. \u201cI bought it because of the association,\u201d he said, referring to the San Francisco 49ers Enterprises organization that now owns 44% of Leeds United. He knew very little about the 49ers. \u201cThey\u2019re an American Football team, I think.\u201d But this Yorkshireman from Bradford \u2014 Leeds\u2019 neighboring city \u2014 was ready to embrace the team\u2019s minority owners who have the option to buy out current owner Andrea Radrizzani by 2024. \u201cI like the brand\u2026the city of San Francisco and the Golden Gate Bridge!\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wysiwyg__paragraph\" data-aos=\"fade-up\">\n<div class=\"wysiwyg__inner\">\n<p>With the exception of a few players like Mike Grella and Robbie Rogers during their years in the lower leagues, Leeds supporters have never had much need to consider America. While the Fenway Sports Group that owns the Boston Red Sox have unobtrusively led Liverpool to great success, Leeds fans have no eagerness for an impulsive American owner like Chelsea\u2019s Todd Boehly, who made a dubious impression by calling for an All Star game. Nor do they want to emulate hated rivals Manchester United, whose stadium is in disrepair and whose team is suffering a decade-long slump because of the poor management and massive debts imposed by the Glazer family, the Florida-based owners of the NFL\u2019s Tampa Bay Buccaneers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wysiwyg__change\" data-aos=\"fade-up\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/www.whatahowler.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Howler-Leeds-United-image2-1620x1080--1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-23742\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Brenden Aaronson &#8211; Photo by Lee Brown<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wysiwyg__paragraph\" data-aos=\"fade-up\">\n<div class=\"wysiwyg__inner\">\n<p>Now, though, a new American manager (and possible future manager of the USMNT), a core of players with American backgrounds and a significant minority owner in San Francisco have led to a grudging and growing acceptance that maybe Leeds might have some good Americans. For American Val Leon, who married a United fan and moved to the Leeds area, overcoming the obstacle of initial mistrust was a personal task.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wysiwyg__heading\" data-aos=\"fade-up\">\n<div class=\"wysiwyg__inner\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u201cI had to tell my story twice a week!\u201d<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wysiwyg__paragraph\" data-aos=\"fade-up\">\n<div class=\"wysiwyg__inner\">\n<p>Visitors to the pub where she worked assumed that she was a fan because of Marsch and the new players Brenden Aaronson and Tyler Adams \u2014 or perhaps Jack Harrison, who attended high school in Massachusetts and played college soccer at Wake Forest before joining NYCFC on his way back to England.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wysiwyg__paragraph\" data-aos=\"fade-up\">\n<div class=\"wysiwyg__inner\">\n<p>\u201cBut once I explained that I had \u2018married in\u2019 and I\u2019d been going to games and been a fan since [Marcelo] Bielsa was manager, they accepted me.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-aos=\"fade-up\">\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wysiwyg__change\" data-aos=\"fade-up\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"http:\/\/shop.whatahowler.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"970\" height=\"250\" src=\"https:\/\/www.whatahowler.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/howler_banner_2_970x250.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-23744\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div data-aos=\"fade-up\">\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wysiwyg__paragraph\" data-aos=\"fade-up\">\n<div class=\"wysiwyg__inner\">\n<p>This seemed to be a pattern writ large across the fanbase. Niall Wright and his father, Don (longtime season ticket holders) were thoughtful in their assessment, breaking it down to the different aspects of the American influence. Don, a coach, commented that \u201cWith Marsch, the jury\u2019s out\u2026. He seems very good at PR, but we haven\u2019t really yet seen what his team can do.\u201d Niall added that Marsch came in at a difficult time, just after the departure of one of the great managers of modern history. \u201cHe\u2019s arrived after the love of the Bielsa era, and that\u2019s not easy to do.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wysiwyg__change\" data-aos=\"fade-up\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/www.whatahowler.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Howler-Leeds-United-image4-1620x1080--1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-23746\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Photo by Lee Brown<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wysiwyg__paragraph\" data-aos=\"fade-up\">\n<div class=\"wysiwyg__inner\">\n<p>Niall also explained a nuance of the ownership that most are unaware of. \u201cThe San Francisco 49ers Enterprises is different from the 49ers themselves. [Australian businessman, Leeds United board member Peter] Lowy is part of the investment and malls are his business. He wants to build a big Westfield Mall, for a \u2018Matchday Experience,\u2019 right there.\u201d He gestures to the relatively undeveloped space between the stadium and the M62 motorway. \u201cThat can then help fund the stadium redevelopment. Let\u2019s not pretend they aren\u2019t in it for the profit, but maybe there\u2019s something for everyone.\u201d <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wysiwyg__blockquote\" data-aos=\"fade-up\">\n<div class=\"wysiwyg__inner\">\n<div class=\"font-stratos font-bold\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<div class=\"wysiwyg__paragraph\" data-aos=\"fade-up\">\n<div class=\"wysiwyg__inner\">\n<p><strong>\u201cLet\u2019s not pretend they aren\u2019t in it for the profit, but maybe there\u2019s something for everyone.\u201d <\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wysiwyg__change\" data-aos=\"fade-up\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"681\" src=\"https:\/\/www.whatahowler.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Howler-Leeds-United-image3-1620x1080--1024x681.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-23743\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Leeds United &#8211; Photo by Lee Brown<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wysiwyg__paragraph\" data-aos=\"fade-up\">\n<div class=\"wysiwyg__inner\">\n<p>As for the players, Niall and Don are in agreement. \u201cAdams and Aaronson seem like the real deal.\u201d That sentiment is shared by a number of fans who are walking around with replica Leeds jerseys with the names of American international players printed on them. Probably because Aaronson, a rising star on the USMNT, is a visible attacker with a slight, child-like frame, many of the shirts with his name are worn by smaller kids. Young Luke Gray was over from Ireland with his dad Stephen for his third home game of the season. He wore an \u201cAaronson 7\u201d shirt. It\u2019s nothing to do with being American, he beamed. \u201cI just like him because he\u2019s good!\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wysiwyg__paragraph\" data-aos=\"fade-up\">\n<div class=\"wysiwyg__inner\">\n<p>That\u2019s the general feeling amongst Leeds fans. If American input can help the club prosper, then Leeds will embrace it. But for a club over a hundred years old, a year or two doesn\u2019t yet herald a new era. \u201cJesse\u201d and \u201cBrenden\u201d scarves with the stars and stripes are selling but not selling out.
