[On December
\n5th<\/sup>, 1945<\/a>, five naval jets disappeared over the Bermuda Triangle<\/a>,
\nhelping establish an urban legend that has endured to this day<\/a>. So
\nthis week I\u2019ll AmericanStudy five such urban legends, leading up to a crowd-sourced
\nweekend post!]<\/p>\n

On three
\ntelling stages in the development of a
\nlocal legend<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

1)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>Word of mouth: The basic outline of the Bell Witch legend<\/a> is that between
\n1817 and 1821, in Robertson County,
\nTennessee<\/a>, the family of farmer John Bell Sr. was repeatedly haunted by a
\nfemale spirit who came to be known as Kate, and who seemed to be particularly
\nobsessed with Bell\u2019s teenage daughter Betsy. Meanwhile, a young military
\nofficer named John R. Bell (apparently not related to the farmer, which is cray
\ncray but might also explain why the name \u201cBell Witch\u201d caught on for this legend)
\nwas part of Stephen H.
\nLong\u2019s 1820 expedition<\/a> to the Great Plains and Rocky Mountains, and
\nrecorded in his
\ndetailed journal<\/a> that during a stop in Robertson County he was told the
\nstory of a young woman who was haunted by a ghostly voice. Sometimes that\u2019s all
\nit takes to get an urban legend going, some oral history
\nstorytelling<\/a> and a figure and text that can help pass the word of mouth
\nalong. \u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

2)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>Media Investigations: One explorer\u2019s journal wouldn\u2019t
\nlikely be enough to perpetuate a legend for generations, though\u2014for that, it
\ntakes the kinds of repeated rediscoveries and reports that media outlets can
\nprovide. One of the main such outlets for the Bell Witch legend was none other
\nthan my public scholarly home The Saturday Evening Post<\/i>, which supposedly
\nreported<\/a> on the legend sometime around 1850 (the details are,
\nappropriately, sketchy). Those reports were then picked up later in the 1850s by
\ntwo New England periodicals, the New
\nEngland Farmer<\/a><\/i> and Green
\nMountain Freeman<\/a><\/i>, both of which credited the Post<\/i>. A few decades
\nlater, we see another example of this trend, as a pamphlet associated with the 1880 Nashville Centennial Exposition<\/a>
\nincluded a new account of the Bell Witch legend, presumably based on one or
\nmore of these earlier versions. The legend continues! <\/span><\/p>\n

3)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>An obsessed author: Those various versions
\nwould likely have ensured that the Bell Witch legend didn\u2019t die out completely,
\nbut they seem sufficiently isolated in both time and place that they would
\nlikely not have been enough to lead to tons of 20th<\/sup>
\nand early 21st<\/sup> century pop culture<\/a> representations. For that, it
\ntook what it often takes, an obsessive individual willing to do a very, very deep
\ndive. In this case, that individual was the strikingly named Martin Van Buren Ingram<\/a>,
\na Kentucky Civil War veteran turned journalist who became interested in the legend
\naround 1890 and in 1894
\npublished<\/a> a book with
\na title<\/a> I am obligated to repeat in full: An Authenticated History of
\nthe Famous Bell Witch. The Wonder of the 19th Century, and Unexplained
\nPhenomenon of the Christian Era. The Mysterious Talking Goblin that Terrorized
\nthe West End of Robertson County, Tennessee, Tormenting John Bell to His Death.
\nThe Story of Betsy Bell, Her Lover and the Haunting Sphinx<\/i>. If I told you
\nthat its publisher, Clarksville\u2019s W.P. Titus, reported
\na delay<\/a> due to the witch herself haunting the premises\u2014well, what\u2019s more
\nurban legend than that?<\/span><\/p>\n
