Just a quick post to report on the appearance of a classic
\nbeer that I thought had long vanished. I\u2019m talking about Ind Coope\u2019s Draught
\nBurton Ale<\/b>, or DBA<\/b> for short. Those of us with long memories aka, those of a
\ncertain age, will remember this classic Burton beer, and the storm it caused
\nwithin the beer world when it first launched in 1976 <\/b>\u2013 50 years<\/b> ago to be
\nprecise! The appearance of this beer marked a turning point in what CAMRA<\/b>
\nhad described as the \u201cReal Ale Revolution.\u201d<\/i><\/b> It was certainly the
\nmoment in time when the large brewing conglomerates began to take \u201cReal
\nAle\u201d<\/i><\/b> seriously. <\/p>\n

If my memory is correct, and that\u2019s not always a certainty
\nafter half a century, DBA<\/b> was a beer based on the bottled version of Double
\nDiamond,<\/b> which was a completely different brew to the fizzy keg beer of the same
\nname. Promoted under the slogan \u201cA Double Diamond works wonders\u201d,<\/i><\/b> keg DD was
\nweaker in strength than the bottled version and lacking in taste as well. Bottled
\nDD<\/b> was a successor of the true Burton pale ale<\/b>s of yesteryear, whilst the keg
\nversion was just that \u2013 a mass-produced, and heavily promoted keg bitter,
\ndesigned to compete with other national keg beers, such as Courage Tavern Keg,
\nWatney\u2019s Red, Whitbread Tankard, <\/b>and several others, of similar ilk.<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

It was a stroke of marketing genius though, to launch a cask
\nbeer with the strength and credentials of a genuine Burton Pale Ale<\/b>, and for
\nseveral decades Ind Coope DBA<\/b> was a well-deserved success. However, further takeovers
\nand mergers within the brewing industry, left the beer out on a limb. Other,
\nequally characterful cask beers came along, with most of them brewed by independent
\nbrewers. Slowly, but surely sales of DBA<\/b> began to slide, and eventually, Danish<\/b>
\ngiant Carlsberg<\/b>, who by then owned the brand, decided to put the beer out of
\nits misery. This happened in January 2015<\/b>, with the Danes<\/b> claiming that demand for
\nDBA <\/b>had fallen to \u201can unsustainable level\u201d. <\/i><\/b>With virtually no promotion behind the
\nbrand, and the beer itself, almost impossible to find, this was hardly
\nsurprising.<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

And there, the DBA<\/b> story might have ended, had it not been
\nfor the duo behind the small, Burton Bridge Brewery, <\/b>who announced they planned
\nto brew a batch of a beer called Draught Burton Ale<\/b> for the local CAMRA beer
\nfestival<\/b> the following month. It was fitting then that Geoff Mumford <\/b>and Bruce Wilkinson,<\/b>
\nboth of whom had worked for Ind Coope<\/b>, and had been involved in devising the
\nrecipe for the original DBA,<\/b> should brew the beer.<\/p>\n

Fast forward to March 2020<\/b>, and the period shortly before
\nthe first, national COVID <\/b>emergency was declared. I was visiting Burton-on-Trent
\n<\/b>with a group of beer and pub enthusiasts, drawn for the ranks of the CAMRA
\nDiscourse, Beer & Pubs Forum,<\/b> plus a number of beer bloggers and enthusiasts
\nlike me. We were on what might be described as a \u201ccurated tour\u201d <\/i><\/b>of some of
\nBurton\u2019s<\/b> finest pubs. One of those pubs was the famous Burton Bridge Brewery,
\n<\/b>and the company\u2019s version of DBA<\/b> was on sale at the pub of the same name. We of
\ncourse, had to try a pint, and you can read what I wrote about my experience of the beer, here.<\/a><\/u><\/b><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

A couple of weeks after that visit to Burton,<\/b> the National
\nCOVID Lockdown<\/b> came into force, and what with partial lifting, \u201cfirebreak\u201d<\/i><\/b>
\nshutdowns, \u201cZones”<\/i><\/b> and all the other nonsense we had to endure, it was the best
\npart of two years before such \u201ccurated tours\u201d <\/b>were again possible, and things started
\ngetting back to normal.<\/p>\n

In the meantime, I\u2019d forgotten all about Draught Burton Ale<\/b>,
\nso imagine my surprise at seeing it on sale at the Nelson Arms<\/b>, in Tonbridge<\/b>. I\u2019d
\npopped in for a glass or two of Harvey\u2019s XXXX Old Ale, <\/b>a beer that you might recall
\nI am quite fond of. Seeing the pump clip, brought back memories, so I just had
\nto try a pint, and that provoked other memories, because the DBA<\/b> tasted every
\nbit as good as I recall. Checking with the Burton Bridge Brewery<\/a><\/u><\/b> website, I\u2019m pleased
\nto confirm that this legendary beer is still available, at least in bottled form.
\nPresumably, the beer must be packaged in cask form too, at least from time to
\ntime. <\/p>\n
