Virgin Australia has launched its first daily Melbourne Airport (MEL) to Doha Hammad International Airport (DOH) service, as part of the airline\u2019s expansion of its international network ahead of the busy Christmas travel period.<\/p>\n
The new route, which began operations on December 1, 2025, brings the total number of daily services between Australia and Qatar\u2019s capital to four, with Virgin Australia and partner Qatar Airways now operating flights from Melbourne, Sydney Kingsfordsmith International Airport (SYD), Brisbane Airport (BNE), and Perth Airport (PER).\u00a0<\/p>\n
According to Virgin Australia, the expanded network is expected to inject more than AU$3 billion (US$1.9 billion) into the Australian economy annually. Research commissioned by Melbourne Airport indicates the Melbourne-Doha service alone will contribute approximately AU$190 million (US$124 million) in economic value to Victoria each year.<\/p>\n
The Melbourne-Doha launch follows Virgin Australia\u2019s return to long-haul international flying in June 2025. The airline expects one of its busiest summer periods on record as it prepares to fly millions of passengers during the Christmas travel season.<\/p>\n

Annual capacity on Australia-Doha routes has grown 53 percent to 2.65 million seats with the addition of the daily services from major capital cities.<\/p>\n
The service is expected to benefit Australian exporters through an additional 108 tonnes of weekly cargo capacity. Virgin Australia is using Qatar Airways\u2019 Boeing 777 aircraft on the route, which provides significant freight space in addition to passenger capacity.<\/p>\n
\u201cMelbourne Airport handles more than 40 per cent of the nation\u2019s airfreight exports and these additional services will unlock more capacity for local exporters to reach more markets across the globe,\u201d said Melbourne Airport Chief Executive Officer Lorie Argus.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cMelbourne is now the only Australian city to enjoy triple-daily flights to Doha, bringing travellers more choice and easier access to destinations across the Middle East, Europe, Africa, and the Americas,\u201d Argus added.<\/p>\n
Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive Officer Engr. Badr Mohammed Al-Meer highlighted the partnership\u2019s broader impact.\u00a0\u201cThis partnership delivers benefits well beyond passenger travel,\u201d he said. \u201cWith Virgin Australia using Qatar Airways\u2019 Boeing 777s on the route, we can now offer additional cargo capacity between Melbourne and Doha.
