href=\"https:\/\/www.theweek.in\/wire-updates\/national\/2025\/11\/30\/cal17-wb-ec-sir-parties.amp.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><u>alleged the Election Commission\u2019s<\/u><\/a> decision to extend the schedule for the special intensive revision of electoral rolls by a week showed that the exercise had been launched in haste and was \u201cill-conceived\u201d, PTI reported.<\/p>\n<p>Samajwadi Party chief <a class=\"link-external\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/samajwadiparty\/status\/1995119020912345248\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Akhilesh Yadav<\/a> said that a one-week extension was not enough, and that the timeline should have been extended by three months. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Election Commission did not pay any heed to this logical and practical demand,\u201d he said. \u201cIt appears that the commission has lost all sensitivity, and has no concern for the problems of the voters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Yadav said that booth-level officers implementing the process on the ground were being overburdened, which was harming their physical and mental health.<\/p>\n<p>The Trinamool Congress said the change was \u201c<a class=\"link-external\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/AITCofficial\/status\/1995127393581969895?s=20\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><u>an open admission <\/u><\/a>that the original schedule was impossible, irresponsible and dangerous\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Commission may try to reset dates, issue statements, or hide behind procedure, but the lives lost in this manufactured panic are on their conscience,\u201d the party said. \u201cAnd no deadline extension can wash away that guilt.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The party\u2019s West Bengal vice-president Jay Prakash Majumdar claimed the poll body had announced the entire exercise \u201cjust to cater to the interest of the ruling party at the Centre, the BJP,\u201d PTI reported.<\/p>\n<p>Congress leader <a class=\"link-external\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/PTI_News\/status\/1995041218645168373?s=20\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><u>Pramod Tiwari<\/u><\/a> said the poll body had \u201citself realised\u201d that the work could not be completed within the initial timeline, PTI reported.<\/p>\n<p>He urged the poll body to adopt a more extensive schedule similar to the one used in 2003 and extend the dates further.<\/p>\n<p>On Sunday, the Election Commission extended <a href=\"https:\/\/scroll.in\/latest\/1088893\/election-commission-extends-voter-list-revision-timeline-by-one-week\">by one week<\/a> the timeline for the special intensive revision of electoral rolls underway in 12 states and Union Territories.<\/p>\n<p>Booth-level officers had begun distributing enumeration forms on November 4.<\/p>\n<p>The last date of submitting the forms has been extended to December 11 from December 4.<\/p>\n<p>The final electoral rolls are to be published on February 14 instead of February 7.<\/p>\n<p>The exercise is underway in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Goa, Puducherry, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu and Lakshadweep, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal.<\/p>\n<p>Several suspected suicides of booth-level officers allegedly because of the work pressure related to the revision process have been reported in <a href=\"https:\/\/scroll.in\/latest\/1088837\/three-blos-die-in-up-families-allege-dismissal-threat-work-pressure-linked-to-voter-list-revision\">Uttar Pradesh<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/scroll.in\/latest\/1088730\/bengal-another-blo-found-hanging-mamata-asks-how-many-more-lives-will-be-lost-due-to-sir\">West Bengal<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/scroll.in\/latest\/1088599\/two-blos-die-by-suicide-in-kerala-rajasthan-allegedly-due-to-voter-roll-revision-work-pressure\">Kerala and Rajasthan<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/scroll.in\/tag\/Bihar-voter-roll-revision\">Bihar<\/a>, where the revision was completed ahead of the <a href=\"https:\/\/scroll.in\/latest\/1087350\/bihar-assembly-elections-to-be-held-in-two-phases-on-november-6-and-11\">Assembly polls<\/a> in November, at least <a href=\"https:\/\/scroll.in\/latest\/1087177\/bihar-final-voter-list-released-after-special-intensive-revision\">47 lakh voters<\/a> were excluded from the final electoral roll published on September 30.<\/p>\n<p>Concerns had been raised after the announcement in Bihar that the exercise could remove eligible voters from the roll.
