He made the comments in a podcast conversation with Zerodha co-founder Nikhil Kamath.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking on the \u201cWTF is?\u201d podcast, released on Sunday, Musk argued that America needs high-skill workers from India now more than ever, while also calling out misuse of the visa system by some outsourcing firms.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAmerica has been an immense beneficiary of talent from India,\u201d Musk said, adding that his companies constantly struggle to fill specialised roles because \u201cthere\u2019s always a scarcity of talented people.\u201d<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align:center;margin-top:10px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/preferences\/source?q=siasat.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"google-news-btn\" style=\"display:inline-block;transition:transform .2s ease,box-shadow .2s ease;border-radius:12px;overflow:hidden;line-height:0;font-size:0;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"676\" height=\"213\" alt=\"Add as a preferred source on Google\" style=\"display:block;margin:0;padding:0;height:70px;width:auto;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.siasat.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/preferred_publisher.webp\"\/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"676\" height=\"213\" src=\"https:\/\/www.siasat.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/preferred_publisher.webp\" alt=\"Add as a preferred source on Google\" style=\"display:block;margin:0;padding:0;height:70px;width:auto;\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"stream-item-in-post awt_ad_code\"> <a href=\"https:\/\/mseducationacademy.in\/?ref=siasat.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" style=\"display: block;\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Memory Khan Seminar\" width=\"336\" height=\"280\" style=\"width: auto; max-height: 280px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.siasat.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/MS-NEET.webp\"\/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.siasat.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/MS-NEET.webp\" alt=\"Memory Khan Seminar\" width=\"336\" height=\"280\" style=\"width: auto; max-height: 280px;\"\/> <\/a> <\/div>\n<p>While defending the H-1B programme as a crucial pipeline for global talent, he also acknowledged its vulnerabilities.<\/p>\n<p>He criticised \u201csome of the outsourcing companies (that) have kind of gamed the system,\u201d and urged reforms to \u201cstop the gaming of the system\u201d rather than shutting the programme down entirely.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m absolutely not in the school of thought that we should shut down the H-1B programme,\u201d he said, pushing back on calls from parts of the political right.<\/p>\n<p>Musk linked wider immigration debates to policy failures, arguing that the previous administration\u2019s approach amounted to \u201ca total free for all, with like no border controls,\u201d which he said encouraged illegal immigration and \u201ca negative selection effect.\u201d \u201cUnless you\u2019ve got border controls, you\u2019re not a country,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Musk\u2019s comments come at a tense moment for the H-1B programme under President Donald Trump\u2019s second term, which has adopted a stricter regulatory posture while still acknowledging the necessity of skilled foreign workers.<\/p>\n<p>The H-1B visa, created by the Immigration Act of 1990, allows US employers to hire foreign professionals in speciality occupations.<\/p>\n<div class=\"stream-item-in-post awt_ad_code\"> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.germantenhospitals.com\/?ref=siasat.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Germanten Hospital\" width=\"336\" height=\"280\" src=\"https:\/\/www.siasat.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/Germanten-JointReplacement.webp\"\/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.siasat.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/Germanten-JointReplacement.webp\" alt=\"Germanten Hospital\" width=\"336\" height=\"280\" loading=\"lazy\"\/> <\/a> <\/div>\n<p>Congress caps the programme at 65,000 visas annually. Indians dominate the system: they received 71 per cent of all H-1B approvals in 2024, followed by Chinese nationals at 12 per cent.<\/p>\n<p>The US approved nearly 400,000 H-1B applications that year, including renewals outside the cap.<\/p>\n<p>In Trump\u2019s second term, enforcement has tightened. In September, he announced a new $100,000 fee on fresh H-1B petitions filed after September 21, 2025. The fee targets what the administration calls \u201cloopholes\u201d enabling employers to \u201cundercut American workers.\u201d It does not apply to renewals, current visa holders, or 2025 lottery winners.<\/p>\n<p>A Department of Homeland Security proposal expected in December will revisit cap exemptions, expand scrutiny of violators, and tighten third-party worksite rules to \u201cimprove programme integrity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite the tough rhetoric, Trump has repeatedly acknowledged the programme\u2019s economic value. In a November 11 Fox News interview, he defended the visas against critics within his base: \u201cYou do also have to bring in talent\u2026 We\u2019re not going to be successful if we don\u2019t allow people who invest billions\u2026 to bring a lot of their people from their country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Acknowledging workforce gaps, he added: \u201cYou can\u2019t take people off an unemployment line and say, \u2018I\u2019m going to put you into a factory.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Washington: Tesla CEO Elon Musk has defended the H-1B visa programme, saying that the US economy has \u201cbenefited immensely\u201d from Indian immigrants.
