Ritual moments — small, deliberate acts repeated daily — are not mere habits for me. They are anchors. They mark transitions, refocus intention, and consecrate the ordinary.

I weave several ritual moments into my life: washing my hands when I wake, ringing bells at the opening and closing of meditation, and using a Pomodoro timer to focus on work. These are not grand ceremonies, but personal rituals that align me with purpose, presence, and connection.

Morning hand-washing

My first act on waking is to consciously wash my hands. This comes from a Jewish tradition, known as netilath yadayim.

“…a person who has slept is required to wash upon arising, and says [a] blessing…The water is poured out from a vessel three times, intermittently, over each hand… This is performed when waking from a full night’s sleep…”
—Handwashing in Judaism

Many other traditions and religions (Egyptian, Greek, Roman, Islamic, Hindu, and Shinto) include hand-washing ritual on awakening and at other events during the day. Although I am not a practising Jew, I have adopted a version of the ritual: standing at the sink with the tap running, I let the stream pass over my right hand, then my left, and repeat this three times.

For me, washing my hands is a pause: a moment to recognize that I’ve been given another day, another opportunity. It helps me shift from the semi-sleeping mind state into intentional being.

Three bells

I use three bells to mark the start and end of meditation. The first bell calls me to relax into stillness. The second shifts me to steady attention of my breath. The third asks me to notice whatever is coming up for me, without attachment or avoidance.

At the end of my sit, a final sequence of three bells gives me a gentle, unhurried transition back to the day.

This simple sound ritual creates clear entrances and exits for my practice, providing audible cues that shape the session’s interior rhythm.

Bell practice appears in many meditation traditions; I didn’t invent it. Still, the bells have become for me an effective scaffold that formalises the practice.

Pomodoro: time for work

When I work, I often set a Pomodoro timer (typically 25 minutes) and commit fully to work during the interval. This is a simple and effective secular ritual. With the timer set, I feel free to focus on my work, knowing the timer will remind me when the time period I’ve set is over.

Before I used Pomodoro, I sometimes fell into long sprints where time dissolved. That felt productive, but I eventually noticed that when I failed to include resting periods, my work became less effective, more prone to errors, and potentially more stuck. (See What I’ve learned about working productively for more information.)

During Pomodoro time, I am making a pact with myself to show up, concentrate, and do the work. When the alarm rings, I gently pause my work, take a break, and then either start a new Pomodoro cycle or switch to another activity.

Pomodoro is a ritual I use to intentionally engage with my work.

What ritual moments do for me and for us

Ritual moments, whether personal or shared, perform several functions at once:

Orient us to intention.
Each ritual helps align attention with what matters right now. and, by extension, with larger aspirations.

Support habit with flexibility.
Rituals build structure and routine, but they avoid rigidity by being intentional acts rather than mindless mechanical repetition.

Connect us beyond thought.
Rituals engage the body, the senses, and the environment, not just the brain. They root us in the physical world, and in relationships with tradition, with self, and with others.

Create presence and timelessness.
Rituals produce a sense of “just now,” a brief suspension of chronological time where attention is simply present.

Group ritual moments

Archeological evidence shows us that human groups have used ritual moments for hundreds of thousands of years; every society has them. Rituals of worship, rites of passage, the swearing of oaths, birth and death ceremonies, partnership commitments, civic transitions, oral and musical traditions, and communal dancing are familiar examples.

In my event work, I use group rituals deliberately. When I set group agreements, I’ll ask everyone to stand (or raise a hand) to signal acceptance. My closing process invites all participants to share their experience aloud. And when an event gathers people from many cultures, I like to use a closing ritual that participants choose and lead themselves.

Final Reflection

In a world that sometimes feels fragmented and hurried, ritual moments are my way of reclaiming coherence. They anchor me in a lineage of human practice, in the present moment, and in the unfolding of my intentions.

Many people already practice small rituals — making coffee, stretching, checking email — without naming them. Consciously recognizing such acts deepens their power.

Perhaps the deepest gift of ritual is that it reminds us that we are not merely living by accident. We are not passive. We are artists of our own days, shaping moments of presence, connection, and meaning.

Over the years, I have discovered that life without ritual can feel untethered.
