I find knowing I\u2019ll revisit my posts to be a positive and mellowing influence on my social media activity. I mostly hang out on Mastodon (at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/post.lurk.org\/@disquiet\">post.lurk.org\/@disquiet<\/a>), and I\u2019m also trying out\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/disquiet.com\/2023\/07\/12\/a-litany-of-urls\/\">a few others<\/a>. And I generally take weekends off social media.<\/p>\n<p>Right now, though, I\u2019m on a more extended <a href=\"https:\/\/disquiet.com\/2025\/11\/14\/social-media-hiatus\/\">social media (and adjacent)<\/a> break, through the start of January 2026. Which raises the question: when I\u2019m on such a <a href=\"https:\/\/disquiet.com\/2025\/11\/14\/social-media-hiatus\/\">hiatus<\/a>, what constitutes this site\u2019s Scratch Pad, since it is by definition a collation of stuff I posted to social media throughout the given previous week. Apparently it\u2019s random notes I made to myself that I would have posted online. Just because I\u2019ve stopped posting\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/disquiet.com\/2025\/11\/21\/digital-cozy\/\">doesn\u2019t mean my brain has stopped<\/a>\u00a0making posts. I\u2019m nearly done with a full week off work, but my time off social media \u2014 my time with fewer threads of conversations to track \u2014 has a full month to go. <\/p>\n<p>\u25b0 At a concert recently, the music was deep and sinuous, and the interplay of the musicians was exactly what one might hope for. I closed my eyes and I didn\u2019t drift off, not in the slightest; if anything, I was more present. And something occurred to me in my presentness, which was: You know, at some point we all have to go, and there would be worse ways to go. (I mean I hope way down the road, of course.)<\/p>\n<p>\u25b0 I\u2019ve found that the Safari browser and the Zen browser have been working <em>very<\/em> slowly on my M1 MacBook Pro (I know the M5s are coming out, but I\u2019m trying to hold out until the M6), so I\u2019m testing the Vivaldi browser, which has been working well on my laptop and my iPhone, but when I pull up the settings on my iPad (M5 iPad Pro, running current iPadOS) to sync, I get \u2026 a blank screen. There is never a day when nothing doesn\u2019t work.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"441\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/disquiet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/vivaldi.png?resize=640%2C441&amp;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-73159\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/disquiet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/vivaldi.png?w=800&amp;ssl=1 800w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/disquiet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/vivaldi.png?resize=560%2C386&amp;ssl=1 560w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/disquiet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/vivaldi.png?resize=185%2C127&amp;ssl=1 185w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/disquiet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/vivaldi.png?resize=768%2C529&amp;ssl=1 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>\u25b0 I\u2019m playing the video game <em>Split Fiction<\/em> currently (on PS5), and it\u2019s split between fantasy mode and science fiction mode. A pair of characters represent the two storytelling types, and they have to learn to work together (as in <em>It Takes Two<\/em> \u2014 from the same company, Hazelight Studios \u2014 which I\u2019ve also played). It\u2019s a lot of fun, and tropes have reinforced for me that I\u2019m very much a science fiction mode person, though I do have plans to try to re-read <em>The Lord of the Rings<\/em> this coming year. <\/p>\n<p>\u25b0 There is a certain type of movie that brings out people who go to the movies so infrequently that they can\u2019t navigate movie theaters, and I can confirm from recent personal experience that <em>Hamnet<\/em> is just such a movie. And it differs from the novel on which it is based \u2014 and <a href=\"https:\/\/disquiet.com\/2023\/01\/02\/novels-read-2022\/\">which<\/a> I did <a href=\"https:\/\/disquiet.com\/2022\/02\/19\/twitter-com-disquiet-halftime-vinyl-hexagons\/\">enjoy<\/a> quite a <a href=\"https:\/\/disquiet.com\/2022\/03\/02\/sounds-in-an-absence\/\">bit<\/a> \u2014 in various ways, including the absence of the great flea\/plague chapter, on screen tidily summarized with shadow puppets. It may fit into the category of films in which \u201cscreaming is acting.\u201d There is a powerful depiction of how <em>Hamlet<\/em> expresses Shakespeare\u2019s grief at the loss of a child, and\u00a0how by having to be a ghost visiting the still alive Hamlet, Shakespeare-the-actor can address his own personal trauma and make it something that his audience can, in turn, experience \u2014 which, to bring things full circle, keeps his son present, if not alive; not a ghost, but a memory. There\u2019s a moment at the end, when the play is staged, that is clearly intended to evoke something that happens early in the movie, and I kept thinking, \u201cPlease don\u2019t show us a flashback. We remember. It\u2019s only been two hours.\u201d And I\u2019m relieved to say, there was no flashback to this particular thing. There are other flashbacks, but at least not that one. And Max Richter\u2019s score is quite beautiful, even if they do reuse an old piece of his music.<\/p>\n<p>\u25b0 You can tell it\u2019s a long holiday weekend because there are far fewer than usual software updates.<\/p>\n<p>\u25b0 Perhaps the iPad has been this way for a while, but I noticed that now the up\/down volume functions differently in profile and landscape modes. In portfolio mode, the \u201ctop\u201d button (aka \u201cleft\u201d in landscape) raises the volume, and likewise in landscape mode the \u201cright\u201d button (aka \u201cbottom\u201d in profile) lowers the volume. This is as it should be.<\/p>\n<p>\u25b0 Word I learned from <em>Moby Dick<\/em> this week: \u201chist.\u201d And now I\u2019m wondering if the shushers in the final scene in (the film version of) <em>Hamnet<\/em> are saying \u201chist.\u201d And whether this bled into the \u201cssst\u201d that people now say when shushing people.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"184\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/disquiet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/hist.png?resize=640%2C184&amp;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-73166\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/disquiet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/hist.png?w=800&amp;ssl=1 800w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/disquiet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/hist.png?resize=560%2C161&amp;ssl=1 560w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/disquiet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/hist.png?resize=185%2C53&amp;ssl=1 185w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/disquiet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/hist.png?resize=768%2C221&amp;ssl=1 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>\u25b0 Finished reading one book this week, Mick Herron\u2019s <em>Clown Town<\/em>. It\u2019s quite good.
