Kennedy Jr.\u00a0has made a series of false statements\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2025\/08\/26\/rfk-jr-update-autism-study\/85837458007\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (referring)\">referring<\/a>\u00a0to \u201cenvironmental toxins\u201d as a cause of autism. Meanwhile, the Trump Administration is creating a truly toxic environment for people in the United States with disabilities.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. President Donald Trump has spent his first year in office\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/shots-health-news\/2025\/07\/02\/nx-s1-5453870\/senate-republicans-tax-bill-medicaid-health-care\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (removing)\">removing<\/a>\u00a0access to health care,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.americanprogress.org\/article\/poverty-in-america-remained-flat-in-2024-but-will-likely-rise-as-the-one-big-beautiful-bill-act-goes-into-effect\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (exacerbating)\">exacerbating<\/a>\u00a0poverty,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cepr.net\/publications\/snap-cuts-disproportionately-hurt-people-with-disabilities\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (reducing)\">reducing<\/a>\u00a0access to food,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.americanbar.org\/groups\/diversity\/disabilityrights\/news\/trumps-executive-order\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (threatening)\">threatening<\/a>\u00a0civil rights, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.americanprogress.org\/article\/the-trump-administrations-war-on-disability\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (contributing)\">contributing<\/a>\u00a0to stigma against already marginalized people. The stress that Americans now face as a result of this resource deprivation and discrimination will in fact\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/science\/2025\/sep\/30\/study-links-greater-inequality-to-structural-changes-in-childrens-brains\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (cause)\">cause<\/a>\u00a0even more disability.<\/p>\n<p>The relationship between collective material conditions and individual health outcomes has been the subject of extensive research\u2014the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesciencewriter.org\/uncharted\/social-model-disability\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (social model of disability)\">social model of disability<\/a>, developed in the 1970s and 1980s by disability activists, posits that it\u2019s not the differences in our bodies that makes us disabled, but rather, the ways that our society fails to support us. In other words, a society that devalues disabled people and refuses to provide the things we need to thrive (e.g. mobility devices, accessible buildings, affordable health care) is disabling by nature.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This doesn\u2019t mean that, in an equal society, people with physical or mental impairments would never struggle. It means that a lack of inclusive social and physical environments disable us much more than our bodies do.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ahajournals.org\/doi\/10.1161\/HYPERTENSIONAHA.123.21354\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (Research)\">Research<\/a>\u00a0shows that inequality, trauma, poverty, and discrimination are\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uclahealth.org\/news\/publication\/racism-sickening\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (disabling)\">disabling<\/a>\u00a0and can\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC3153850\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (result)\">result<\/a>\u00a0in conditions including high blood pressure, chronic pain, and mental health disabilities. By taking away rights and making life harder for us people with disabilities, our government is creating an environment that will cause more disability.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Disabled people in the United States are already significantly more\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/philanthropynewsdigest.org\/news\/focus-on-disability-rights-growing-but-intersectional-support-lags\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (likely)\">likely<\/a>\u00a0than non-disabled people to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/bbi.syr.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/application\/pdf\/bbi-research-brief-2-2025-02.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (live)\">live<\/a>\u00a0in poverty, especially if they are Black, Indigenous, LGBTQ+, or women. Despite supposed protection from discrimination, many disabled people\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.americanprogress.org\/article\/advancing-economic-security-people-disabilities\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (struggle)\">struggle<\/a>\u00a0to find and maintain employment. Those who are employed may be\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.disabilityscoop.com\/2025\/07\/10\/trump-administration-squashes-plan-to-end-subminimum-wage-employment-of-people-with-disabilities\/31529\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (paid)\">paid<\/a>\u00a0sub-minimum wages.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and Social Security Disability are notoriously\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gallonlaw.com\/challenges-in-obtaining-social-security-disability-benefits-2\/#:~:text=Some%20of%20the%20most%20common%20challenges%20people,deny%20a%20claim%20because%20of%20prior%20denials.\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (difficult to access)\">difficult to access<\/a>, and even those who can access these benefits are forced to live in poverty and subjected to strict asset limits that prevent them from escaping poverty. The administration is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbpp.org\/research\/social-security\/trump-administration-poised-to-cut-ssi-benefits-for-nearly-400000-low\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (now preparing)\">now preparing<\/a>\u00a0to cut SSI even further, contributing to an even worse environment for disabled people.<\/p>\n<p>In a country where health insurance is tied to employment, it\u2019s unsurprising that disabled people\u2014who are often underemployed\u2014have reduced access to affordable, quality health care. As the current administration\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.americanprogress.org\/article\/the-trump-administrations-war-on-disability\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (endeavors)\">endeavors<\/a>\u00a0to cut Medicare and Medicaid, gut public health systems, and spread vaccine misinformation, it\u2019s clear they are not only threatening the health of disabled people, but creating an environment where more people will become disabled by lack of access to health care and the continued\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/d41586-025-00709-9\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (spread)\">spread<\/a>\u00a0of infectious diseases.<\/p>\n<p>The current administration is also\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/7279068\/trump-administration-autism-research-cuts\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (defunding)\">defunding<\/a>\u00a0research that aims to better support autistic people, improve medical care, and increase educational equity. Instead, it is backing poorly designed research that reaches faulty conclusions while\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/09\/05\/health\/hhs-report-autism-folate-acetaminophen\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (ignoring)\">ignoring<\/a>\u00a0decades of evidence. These funding priorities send a clear message: that our country\u2019s leaders don\u2019t value disabled lives or well-being.<\/p>\n<p>The administration\u2019s actions will have widespread consequences, as more than\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/media\/releases\/2024\/s0716-Adult-disability.html#:~:text=CDC%20Data%20Shows%20Over%2070,Disability%20%7C%20CDC%20Online%20Newsroom%20%7C%20CDC\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (one in four)\">one in four<\/a>\u00a0adults and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aecf.org\/blog\/the-state-of-children-with-disabilities-and-special-health-care-needs\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (one in five)\">one in five<\/a>\u00a0children in the U.S. have disabilities. If we can\u2019t care for or support the current disabled population, how can we be prepared to care for and support future generations and the increasing number of people becoming disabled by harmful social and policy environments?\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Autism and other disabilities can come with serious challenges, but that doesn\u2019t mean disabled people\u2019s lives are not valuable. Disabled people have always existed\u2014there\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/goatsandsoda\/2020\/06\/17\/878896381\/ancient-bones-offer-clues-to-how-long-ago-humans-cared-for-the-vulnerable\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (evidence)\">evidence<\/a>\u00a0of people caring for disabled individuals throughout human history. But today, our country\u2019s leaders prioritize misinformation over our lives while disabling even more people by ignoring decades of evidence and lived experience and stripping away our already insufficient safety nets.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>These actions show a failure to address the needs of a large portion of our current population as well as a failure to prepare for our country\u2019s future.
