When the footy finals roll around, there are only three things you need: mates, cold beers, and a BBQ game plan that won’t keep you stuck on the tongs all match. Whether you’re barracking for a specific team or just here for the banter, this is how to host a Grand Final feed that’s fuss-free, full of flavour, and fit for a crowd.

Start with Easy Wins: Crowd-Pleasers That Cook Themselves

Finals day isn’t the time for fiddly plating or slow roasts. You want big batches of satisfying food that can be prepped ahead and flipped fast:

Chicken Wings: Marinate the night before (try spicy buffalo, sticky soy, or lemon herb), then hit the grill in big batches.

""

Sliders: Use patties or pulled meats prepped the night before (beef brisket or lamb shoulder work beautifully). Toast the buns on the BBQ for extra crunch.

""

Snags in Bread: The Aussie staple — throw on a variety of sausages (beef, lamb, spicy chorizo), line up the white bread, onions, and the works. Let guests build their own!

""

Fuel It Right: Use Firebrand Premium Briquettes for steady, all-match heat — ideal for handling rounds of wings or snags without constant refuelling.

Rubbed Meats: Maximum Flavour, Minimal Fuss

If you want to level up your spread without hovering over the flames, dry rubs are your MVP:

Lane’s BBQ Magic Dust for Chicken Wings

""

Hardcore Carnivore Sweet BBQ Rub for Ribs

""

Rub them generously and let them rest overnight in the fridge. The flavours will intensify, creating a crust that locks in moisture and delivers bold taste with every bite.

Fuel It Right: Cook over a mix of Firebrand Lump Charcoal and Cherry Wood Chunks for balanced heat and a hint of sweet smoke that enhances the rub’s character.

Pro Tip: Use two zones on your grill — high heat for searing, low heat to finish — so you can keep things moving and avoid overcooking while you’re yelling at the telly.

Keep the Fire Rolling with the Right Fuel

""

To run a smooth show from bounce to final siren, use a smart fuel combo:

  • Briquettes for even base heat

  • Lump charcoal for quick flares

  • Wood chunks (like Apple or Hickory) for flavour hits when you’re grilling meats

  • Ironbark if you’re using a fire pit for warming the crowd or hanging cuts

All Firebrand fuels are 100% natural, restaurant-grade, and made to perform across long sessions — just like your team (hopefully).

    Ready, Set, Kick-Off!

    ""

Footy finals are all about mates, meat, and making memories — and the BBQ should be part of the action, not a full-time job. With smart prep, flavour-packed rubs, and the proper fuel setup, you can keep the food flowing without missing a second of the game. Whether you’re firing up for a few or feeding the whole crew, Firebrand’s premium range of fuels has you covered — from long-burning briquettes to smoke-enhancing wood chunks. Light the grill, crack a cold one, and bring home the win.
