Blige\u2019s Masterpiece Changed R&#038;B"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"mvp-content-main\">\n<p>One of the oft-told stories about the evolution of mid-20th-century American culture involves <a href=\"https:\/\/www.udiscovermusic.com\/artist\/bob-dylan\/\"><strong>Bob Dylan<\/strong> <\/a>bringing his electric Fender Stratocaster guitar on stage at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival, performing his blistering six-minute epic \u201cLike A Rolling Stone,\u201d and shocking those who were accustomed to his quieter, more narratively-compact, acoustic music. While there are many conflicting accounts about exactly what when down that night, one thing is clear: Dylan\u2019s performance and his pained and provocative song signaled \u2013 in the words of writer Peter Doggett \u2013 \u201cthe moment when pop (ephemeral, trivial) mutated into rock (enduring, significant).\u201d What <a href=\"https:\/\/www.udiscovermusic.com\/artist\/mary-j-blige\/\"><strong>Mary J. Blige\u2019s <em>My Life<\/em> was recently named one of Apple Music\u2019s Best 100 Albums ever. <a href=\"https:\/\/lnk.to\/MyLifeTwentyFive\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Listen to the album now.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Her debut, 1992\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.udiscovermusic.com\/stories\/rediscover-mary-j-bliges-whats-the-411\/\"><strong><em>What\u2019s The 411?<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, was packed with spunky joints about searching for new love and being reminded of loves past. But with <em>My Life<\/em>, the woman who grew up in the William A. Schlobohm Houses, one of the oldest public residential complexes in Yonkers, looped melodies familiar to Black kids raised on their parents\u2019 70s soul records and used the sonic backdrop for deeply confessional songs about being addicted to bad love, doubting her worth, and hoping God would be there when she called. With rough-edged vocals that gave her words the immediacy of a bee sting, Mary broke from R&amp;B conventions by refusing to prettify her pain. She expanded the genre\u2019s emotional landscape with introspective lyrics, soul-baring vocals over samples from an era when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.udiscovermusic.com\/artist\/isaac-hayes\/\"><strong>Issac Hayes<\/strong><\/a>, Curtis Mayfield, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.udiscovermusic.com\/artist\/marvin-gaye\/\"><strong>Marvin Gaye<\/strong><\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.udiscovermusic.com\/artist\/barry-white\/\"><strong>Barry White<\/strong><\/a> brought orchestral grandeur to Black popular music. <em>My Life<\/em> moved <a href=\"https:\/\/www.udiscovermusic.com\/stories\/best-90s-rnb-songs\/\"><strong>90s R&amp;B<\/strong><\/a> out of its adolescence, effectively marking the moment when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.udiscovermusic.com\/stories\/its-got-that-vibe-celebrating-new-jack-swing\/\"><strong>New Jack Swing<\/strong><\/a> grew up and became hip-hop soul.<\/p>\n<p>The album started coming together when the producers of Mary\u2019s first album raised their prices for the second. In response, executive producer Sean \u201cPuffy\u201d Combs chose to hire a talented \u2013 and decidedly less-expensive \u2013 industry newcomer, 23-year-old Chucky Thompson. \u201cI was like, \u2018I\u2019ll do the whole album for free\u2019,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/randbeing.com\/1999\/09\/01\/mary-j-blige-my-life-feature\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Chucky remembers<\/strong><\/a>. Chucky, who hailed from D.C., bonded with Mary over their vintage tastes: \u201cWe both knew older soul music\u2026[It was] the soul that brought us together\u2026I laid a platform for a lot of those emotional records on that album,\u201d he told <a href=\"https:\/\/daily.redbullmusicacademy.com\/2014\/11\/key-tracks-mary-j-blige-my-life\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><em>Red Bull Music Academy<\/em><\/strong><\/a> in 2014. \u201cThere would be times where she would be in the studio singing, and it would be the dopest take in the world, but she would be crying.\u201d The source of much of Mary\u2019s pain was her troubled coupling with K-Ci Hailey, lead singer of Jodeci \u2013 the foursome largely responsible for bringing hip-hop swagger to male R&amp;B. Although she\u2019d never written a song before, Mary penned most of her lyrics for the album, expressing the feelings of loneliness and desperation that came from being in an abusive, on-and-off relationship: \u201cI was writing my feelings down in tears,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/randbeing.com\/1999\/09\/01\/mary-j-blige-my-life-feature\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>she once said<\/strong><\/a>. \u201cBecause that paper was all I had to talk to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>My Life<\/em> deals with infidelity on \u201cMary\u2019s Joint (\u201cYou promised that you never would cheat or lie.\u201d); the agony of rejection on \u201cBe With You\u201d (\u201cI can\u2019t deal with the fact that you don\u2019t want me around.\u201d); and the struggle for self-worth on \u201cBe Happy\u201d (\u201cHow can I love somebody else\/If I can\u2019t love myself\u2026\u201d). Mary\u2019s direct \u2013 almost conversational \u2013 approach to these themes nodded to at least two African American musical traditions. Her songs evoke the blues as author Ralph Ellison described them: \u201can autobiographical chronicle of personal catastrophe expressed lyrically.\u201d They also fit Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/arts-and-entertainment\/wp\/2018\/08\/16\/from-giving-birth-at-12-years-old-to-physical-fights-the-difficult-life-and-times-of-aretha-franklin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>definition of the style<\/strong><\/a> she reigned over: \u201cSoul to me is\u2026being able to bring to the surface that which is happening inside, to make the picture clear.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>My Life<\/em>, which went on to sell more than three million copies and spawned numerous hit singles, including her pained cover of Rose Royce ballad \u201cI\u2019m Goin\u2019 Down.\u201d Rap remixes of some album tracks extended the album\u2019s reach on the radio and in the clubs (\u201cI Love You\u201d with Smif-n-Wessun, \u201cBe With You\u201d with Lauryn Hill, etc.). And although it was cut from the final tracklist, the cathartic \u201cEveryday It Rains\u201d \u2013 co-written by Faith Evans \u2013 became a fan favorite after appearing on the soundtrack to the hip-hop documentary <em>The Show<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The influence of <em>My Life<\/em>\u2019s stripped-down introspective songs was soon evident on such albums as Janet Jackson\u2019s <em>The Velvet Rope<\/em>, on which the pop-R&amp;B superstar wrestles with depression, Erykah Badu\u2019s <em>Baduizm<\/em>, which features personal manifestos built around hip-hop beats, and Lauryn Hill\u2019s <em>The Miseducation of\u2026<\/em>, with its earnest appeals for emotional reciprocity.<\/p>\n<p>But <em>My Life<\/em> also remains relevant to R&amp;B decades after its release. You can hear echoes of Mary when SZA sings \u201cwish I was comfortable just with myself\u201d on \u201cSupermodel\u201d and Summer Walker croons, \u201call I ever asked was [for] you to show me some love\u201d on \u201cPlaying Games.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For Mary, the success of <em>My Life<\/em> was not only gratifying commercially; it gave her artistic purpose.
