Paul Mitchell left and closed the gates behind him before he had to face the music that I had been building for him in my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tynetime.com\/2024\/09\/paul-mitchell-ready-deliver-newcastle-united\/\">most recent post<\/a> on here; while a certain striker dominated the summer headlines with a forced move away from St. James\u2019 Park that left many fans irritated. Nevertheless,\u00a0there\u2019s\u00a0been delirium and drama over the past year, but\u00a0that\u2019s\u00a0the beauty of\u00a0football,\u00a0isn\u2019t it? As we enter the\u00a0much-anticipated,\u00a0much-dreaded\u00a0international break, it gives me space to jot down a few NUFC thoughts of the present, and future &#8211; in no particular order.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"tonalislong-waltz-home-to-italy\">Tonali\u2019s\u00a0long-waltz home to Italy\u00a0<\/h3>\n<p><img alt=\"Sandro Tonali in action for Newcastle United\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" fetchpriority=\"auto\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tynetime.com\/_assets\/tonali-newcastle.DxyU_13V_9KfNN.webp\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Since returning from his gambling ban, Sandro\u00a0Tonali\u00a0has taken to life at Newcastle United in incredible fashion. The Italy midfielder soon\u00a0established\u00a0himself as a crucial cog in Eddie Howe\u2019s midfield and has proven himself as one of the best midfielders in the Premier League. Strong in the tackle, positionally aware, technical ability on the ball,\u00a0discipline\u00a0in a midfield three &#8211; he has been a joy to watch. An elite midfielder who has struck up a nice partnership with both Bruno and\u00a0Joelinton\u00a0&#8211; he\u2019s gone about his business in a professional manner.<\/p>\n<p>Many folks would have questioned the \u00a355m signing after he was landed with a 10-month ban, but as soon as he returned to fitness and first-team football, it was astonishing how quickly he started performing consistently at a top-class level, both for club and country.<\/p>\n<p>Despite that, even since his arrival, there have been regular murmurs about\u00a0Tonali\u00a0and his desire to return to his homeland. Milan and Juve have been linked with the 25-year-old, and in a recent interview\u00a0Tonali\u00a0made no promises of what the future holds, whilst claiming he is happy in Black and White.<\/p>\n<p>The reality is,\u00a0Tonali\u00a0will\u00a0likely be\u00a0one of the next Newcastle players off the taxi rank. He seems destined to return to Italy at some stage in the future; he does seem to yearn for home, and\u00a0I\u2019d\u00a0be shocked if he\u00a0didn\u2019t\u00a0pull on the AC Milan colours again in the next three to five years.<\/p>\n<p>His contractual situation will ensure any fee received will be a hefty one, and given how the Isak saga played out, I get the impression\u00a0Tonali\u00a0might just act more professional and leave on good terms, with both staff &amp; fans. Whether\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0a long-waltz back or not,\u00a0Tonali\u00a0has more to give NUFC and we should enjoy the ride \u2013 while it lasts.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"thiaw-justifying-long-time-admiration\">Thiaw justifying long-time admiration\u00a0<\/h3>\n<p><img alt=\"Malick Thiaw has been in excellent form Newcastle United\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" fetchpriority=\"auto\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tynetime.com\/_assets\/malick-thiaw-newcastle.BOYMywFL_Z1hLIPQ.webp\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Continuing the theme of ex-Milan players, it brings me to Malick Thiaw. Signed towards the end of a frantic summer transfer window, Thiaw has eased\u00a0into\u00a0life on Tyneside and quickly become one of the standout performers. Good on the ball, solid range of passing between the lines, and tactically tuned in, the German is close to nailing-down his first team spot.<\/p>\n<p>Having just turned 24 in August, Thiaw is of an excellent age profile and \u2018fit\u2019 for Newcastle United. It is well-known that Thiaw has been tracked by NUFC for a few years now, so to finally get our man &#8211; and to do so relatively under the radar &#8211; is\u00a0beginning\u00a0to look like excellent business. He\u00a0seems to be\u00a0Schar\u2019s long-term replacement, and that transition\u00a0appears to be\u00a0happening quicker that first anticipated.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"woltemadeto-welcome-wissareprieve\">Woltemade\u00a0to welcome Wissa\u00a0reprieve\u00a0<\/h3>\n<p><img alt=\"Nick Woltemade growing into his role at St. James' Park\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" fetchpriority=\"auto\" width=\"1200\" height=\"817\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tynetime.com\/_assets\/woltemade-newcastle.Djqk9LTr_bX4iD.webp\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Like his German compatriot, Nick\u00a0Woltemade\u00a0has made a strong start to life with the Magpies. A towering presence up top, the\u00a023-year-old\u00a0has shown glimpses of what is to come with a handful of goals in his opening games. Although naturally highlighted for his towering figure;\u00a0Woltemade\u2019s\u00a0quick feet, close control, and vision are what most excites me. He is very tough to dispossess, and his ability to drop-deep to sew attacks together will prove\u00a0very interesting\u00a0once our other signing up top &#8211;\u00a0Yoane\u00a0Wissa &#8211; makes his long-awaited debut.<\/p>\n<p>Wissa joined for an eye-watering \u00a350m from\u00a0Brentford, but\u00a0has yet to kick a ball in Black and White. After excelling in London over the past\u00a0couple\u00a0of years, Wissa finished last season with 18 Premier League goals, which is an incredible achievement given his partner Bryan\u00a0Mbuemo\u00a0netted 20 &#8211; a phenomenal return for both men.<\/p>\n<p>The return \/ <em>debut<\/em> of Wissa will take pressure off Nick, as they will share the duties up front in the immediate future, however; I am hopeful that we see both play together before long.\u00a0Woltemade\u00a0can operate deeper, potentially behind Wissa &#8211; and contribute nicely to the DR Congo\u00a0international\u2019s integration into first team football.<\/p>\n<p>It beckons the possible change of shape \/ formation in the New Year once all folks are fit and\u00a0raring\u00a0to go, as I see\u00a0Woltemade\u00a0and Wissa both eventually starting in the same 11. Wissa\u2019s impending debut will at least \u2013 for now \u2013 take pressure and minutes off Big Nick, and that can only be a good thing.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"eddie-needs-to-experiment--evolve\">Eddie needs to experiment &amp; evolve<\/h3>\n<p><img alt=\"Nick Woltemade growing into his role at St. James' Park\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" fetchpriority=\"auto\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tynetime.com\/_assets\/eddie-howe.DV_GNeT2_Z1JrcKy.webp\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Eddie Howe has started to come under the microscope in recent weeks after some dismal displays away from home in the league. Sunday\u2019s 1-3 defeat to Brentford followed a worrying trend on the road, with scary similarities to the previous week\u2019s\u00a0defeat\u00a0to West Ham.<\/p>\n<p>Despite going one up and with a lead to build on, Newcastle lost steam and conceded three goals without reply. It marked two tepid performances, players looked exhausted and bereft of the intensity that has made them so successful over the years.<br \/>\nThere was absolutely no creativity to be seen, and this stretches back more\u00a0than\u00a0just the past two weeks. Our late loss to Brighton on the road also reeked of little chance creation, only for a moment of magic from\u00a0Woltemade\u00a0to give us hope of a positive result.<\/p>\n<p>Outside of over-the-top anger &amp; trolling on social media, Howe has come in for criticism tactically, and for his choice of\u00a0personnel. His loyalty to key characters of the squad has been questioned; and\u00a0perhaps rightly\u00a0so. Away from home we look\u00a0fairly\u00a0hopeless, there is little cohesion in midfield, and we\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0look to have much threat on the\u00a0counter attack, especially with\u00a0Woltemade\u00a0coming so deep to be involved, leaving little to no support ahead of him on the pitch. Howe needs to adapt to in-game situations quicker, and not let his loyalty to long-term squad members get in the way of experimentation.<\/p>\n<p>That said, talk of replacing Howe still seems utterly ridiculous to me. He has plenty of credit in the bank, a trophy to his name, and has clearly learned from our last venture in the Champions League. We have been one of the best teams in the Champions League this campaign, mostly aided by home fixtures it must be said \u2013 but either way, we are on course to\u00a0progress\u00a0to the next round of the tournament, and this should not be underestimated.\u00a0League form has been poor, there\u2019s little doubt about that, it has been a meagre points return for the fixtures we\u2019ve had so far this season.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0absence\u00a0of Livramento and Hall at full-back has started to hurt us in recent weeks, they are key cogs in the way we play, both defensively and going forward. Their\u00a0timely\u00a0returns will undoubtedly improve us as a team.
