Into this cart,<br \/>\nthey would load whatever household items they could find outside <span data-end=\"1340\" data-start=\"1214\">flower pots (paso), chairs (silya), basins<br \/>\n(batya), stools, tables, and even laundry still hanging on the line (sinampay).<\/span><br \/>\nEntering houses was strictly off-limits, but that didn\u2019t stop them from<br \/>\nincluding clotheslines and garments, sometimes even underwears!<o:p\/><\/span><\/p>\n<p data-end=\"1828\" data-start=\"1526\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: times;\">The borrowed objects were wheeled to a nearby <span data-end=\"1595\" data-start=\"1572\">street intersection<\/span>, where they were<br \/>\narranged in a peculiar display. In <span data-end=\"1667\" data-start=\"1648\">Barrio<br \/>\nSan Jose<\/span>, for instance, the youth would build these makeshift shrines<br \/>\nat crossroads like <span data-end=\"1769\" data-start=\"1748\">Castelar\u2013Plaridel<\/span>,<br \/>\n<span data-end=\"1793\" data-start=\"1771\">Inocencio\u2013Plaridel<\/span>, or <span data-end=\"1826\" data-start=\"1798\">Dra. Salamanca\u2013Plaridel.<\/span><o:p\/><\/span><\/p>\n<p data-end=\"2273\" data-start=\"1830\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: times;\">By dawn, these corners were transformed into<br \/>\nwhimsical public exhibits. Carts piled high with pots, chairs, basins, and<br \/>\nhanging laundry fluttering in the early morning breeze. According to the<br \/>\nelders, these were not just pranks but symbolic gestures. The rearranged<br \/>\nhousehold items represented the <strong data-end=\"2167\" data-start=\"2130\">souls<br \/>\nvisiting homes at midnight.<\/strong> The Tumba served as a playful yet sacred<br \/>\nreminder that the spirits had passed through the neighborhood.<o:p\/><\/span><\/p>\n<p data-end=\"2651\" data-start=\"2275\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: times;\">Come morning, curious onlookers would gather<br \/>\naround the Tumba sites, laughing and pointing out which household items<br \/>\nbelonged to whom. Gradually, the rightful owners would retrieve their things all<br \/>\nexcept, of course, the underwears, which were left untouched and unclaimed. It<br \/>\nwas a scene of humor, mischief, and community bonding, wrapped in the spirit of<br \/>\nremembrance.<o:p\/><\/span><\/p>\n<p data-end=\"3010\" data-start=\"2653\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: times;\">This lighthearted ritual reflected a deep<br \/>\ncultural belief: that <strong data-end=\"2778\" data-start=\"2717\">the dead return to<br \/>\nvisit the living during All Souls\u2019 Day<\/strong> and that the living, in turn,<br \/>\nacknowledged their presence through a blend of faith and fun. The Tumba, in its<br \/>\nown way, bridged the worlds of the living and the departed, turning fear into<br \/>\nlaughter and solemnity into creativity.<o:p\/><\/span><\/p>\n<p data-end=\"3458\" data-start=\"3012\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: times;\">Sadly, by the 1970s, the tradition began to<br \/>\nfade. With the formal establishment of <span data-end=\"3108\" data-start=\"3095\">Barangays<\/span><br \/>\nand the presence of <span data-end=\"3148\" data-start=\"3129\">barangay tanods<\/span><br \/>\n(village watchmen) patrolling the streets at dawn, young people could no longer<br \/>\nfreely carry out their midnight adventures. The Tumba was gradually replaced by<br \/>\nthe imported practice of Halloween &#8211; costumes, parties, and store-bought<br \/>\ndecorations taking the place of neighborhood pranks and communal folklore.<o:p\/><\/span><\/p>\n<p data-end=\"3682\" data-start=\"3460\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: times;\">Today, few Cavite\u00f1os remember the Tumba.
