You left me
\ndeparting from the Red Lion <\/b>at Rusthall<\/b>, and heading for the nearest bus stop.
\nMy intention was to catch the 14:27 <\/b>service from Rusthall Church<\/b>, which would
\nsafely see me back in Tunbridge Wells <\/b>ahead of the school rush. Not only did I
\nachieve this, I also managed to jump off the 291 Metrobus<\/b> outside Tunbridge
\nWells<\/b> station, and then hop onto an Arriva<\/b> bus service that would take me back
\nto Tonbridge. <\/b>Talk about a seamless connection, and hardly a school kid in
\nsight! Arriving
\nback in Tonbridge<\/b>, my first task was to find something to eat, and this I
\nachieved by popping into Gregg’s.\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/span><\/div>\n

There wasn\u2019t a lot left on the filled roll
\nfront, which was hardly surprising given the time of day, but a ham and
\n(admittedly) rather tasteless slice of cheese, shoved into a roll, along with a
\nflat white coffee was sufficient to satisfy the inner man. But where to next? The choice
\nwas either the Nelson Arms<\/b> or Fuggles,<\/b> and it was the latter that won. A convenient
\nbus stop, just five minutes\u2019 walk away from Fuggles<\/b>, swayed the day, as it
\nseems to have done on a number of recent occasions. I\u2019ve been making good use
\nof my \u201cold gits\u201d<\/i><\/b> bus pass, and whilst I\u2019m all for exercise and walking in the
\nfresh air, it\u2019s an uphill slog back to Bailey Towers,<\/b> which isn\u2019t what I need
\nat the end of a day out. <\/span><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/span><\/div>\n

There was
\nalso the chance of getting another stamp on my cask, \u201cloyalty card\u201d<\/i><\/b> \u2013 a stamp
\nfor each pint purchased, followed by a free pint once all 10 spaces have been
\nfilled. I\u2019ve taken quite a shine to Tonbridge Fuggles,<\/b> over the past few
\nmonths, having paid it more visits than any of the other local pubs. I like the
\neasy-going, relaxed atmosphere associated with Fuggles,<\/b> plus the mixed, and appreciative
\ncrowd this beer caf\u00e9 attracts. The other reason is that on Thursdays,<\/b> which is
\nthe day when I\u2019ve got some genuine free time available to me, the Nelson <\/b>doesn\u2019t
\nopen until 3pm<\/b>. Hence Fuggles <\/b>usually wins over the Nelson.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/span><\/div>\n

That\u2019s not
\nto say I haven\u2019t got a soft spot for the latter, as it\u2019s a proper and genuine,
\ntraditional back-street local. With regards to beer range, the Nelson<\/b> stocks up
\nto 10 cask ales<\/b>, compared to the four normally available at Fuggles<\/b>, but here\u2019s
\nthe rub, many are often from small breweries most of us have never heard of. \u00a0<\/span>This is fine for beer tickers, and also for
\nthose who enjoy a bit of variety, but the main thing I\u2019ve noticed is that when
\na popular beer appears amongst the line-up, it will normally disappear quite
\nrapidly, sometimes almost overnight. Examples include Bonfire Boy<\/b> and Christmas
\nAle<\/b> from Harvey\u2019s, Larkin\u2019s Porter, Adnams Old<\/b> and virtually anything from
\nLowestoft-based, Green Jack Brewery. <\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/span><\/div>\n

By contrast,
\nsome of the less well-known beers, often hang around for ages, proof if it was
\nneeded, of the attraction and pulling power of certain well-known beers,
\ncompared to that of their less well-known counterparts. I am able to check
\nwhich beers are on tap at the Nelson,<\/b> thanks to the Real Ale Finder App <\/b>that I installed on my phone. It’s not all one-sided though, as the Nelson <\/b>has a thriving food trade, which not only includes legendary Sunday lunches<\/b>, but also encompasses themed food deals, such as Curry Night, Pie Evening<\/b> and several other specialty evenings. Live music<\/b>, is another feature at the Nelson<\/b>\u00a0 although such performances aren’t that frequent and are not necessarily everyone’s cup of tea.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/span><\/div>\n

Back
\nto the story, after leaving Gregg’s<\/b>, I walked the short distance along to
\nFuggles<\/b>, pausing to check the bus times on the way. I already knew, after
\nlooking online, that a strong, dark mild from The Kernel Brewery<\/a><\/u> <\/b>was on sale,
\nand after ordering a pint, and getting my card stamped, the 5.6% Victorian Mild<\/b>
\ndid not disappoint. It was rich, dark and malty with a tremendous depth of flavour that
\nalso included raisins and chocolate notes. A couple of days previously, I
\nenjoyed a bottle of Baltic Porter<\/b> at home. This 6.4% abv<\/b> beer was also from Kernel<\/b>,
\nand it is here that I\u2019d like to say something about their bottle labels.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

I\u2019m sure
\nmany of you are familiar with Kernel\u2019s <\/b>unassuming plain brown labels, which resemble
\nbrown, paper packaging. Underplayed and unpretentious, and presumably deliberately
\ndesigned, to not detract from the beer itself, but for me, these plain, boring
\nlabels do the beer a huge disservice, as they say absolutely nothing about the beer,
\nas well as the brand itself. Crazy really, because whilst I\u2019m rarely disappointed
\nwhen I crack open a bottle of Kernel beer<\/b> or enjoyed a perfectly pulled pint of
\ncask from the same brewery. Unfortunately, the brown paper labels tell me nothing about the beer, apart
\nfrom that it will surprise me!<\/span><\/p>\n

Before ending
\nthis piece, there\u2019s one final attraction that draws me along to Fuggle<\/b>s on a
\nThursday,<\/b> and that is the reduced price of the hotdogs<\/b> on that particular day. <\/span>\u00a36 Hot Dogs make the perfect lunch offering at Fuggles,<\/a><\/b> was the piece I wrote about this
\noffer, six months ago, and this coming Thursday, <\/b>after a visit to the barbers,
\nplus a spot of shopping, that is where you will find me.<\/span><\/p>\n
