Some business owners say their costs have increased because <a id=\"27787865\" type=\"Denny\" weightage=\"20\" keywordseo=\"U-S-tariffs\" source=\"keywords\" class=\"news-keywords\" href=\"https:\/\/brandequity.economictimes.indiatimes.com\/tag\/u.s.+tariffs\">U.S. tariffs<\/a> on imports have gone up sharply. This leaves them with less space to give big holiday sales. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>Lisa Cheng Smith, founder of Yun Hai Taiwanese Pantry in New York City, said her costs have risen 20 per cent to 50 per cent this year compared to 2024 because of <a href=\"https:\/\/brandequity.economictimes.indiatimes.com\/tag\/u.s.+tariffs\">U.S. tariffs<\/a> on goods from Taiwan and other Asian countries, as reported by CBS News.<\/p>\n<p>In earlier years, Yun Hai gave a 15 per cent <a href=\"https:\/\/brandequity.economictimes.indiatimes.com\/tag\/black+friday\">Black Friday<\/a> discount to push holiday sales, and Cheng Smith told CBS News that this annual offer &#8220;is a really important thing for us.&#8221; This year she is unsure how much discount she can give because tariffs have raised her operational costs. She said, &#8220;It&#8217;s complicated because of tariffs and how the retail math works,&#8221; explaining that she must choose between a smaller discount or keeping the usual offer customers expect. She added that for small businesses, these decisions matter a lot because &#8220;What we do from October through December is equal to the whole rest of the year in terms of sales, so every day is more high stakes.&#8221; Retail experts say higher tariffs could lead to fewer Black Friday deals this year and smaller discounts overall. <\/p>\n<p>Neil Saunders, managing director and retail analyst at GlobalData, told CBS News, &#8220;There will be discounts and deals \u2014 that&#8217;s what Black Friday is about\u2026 but I think they will be more surgical and selective in the discounting.&#8221; Saunders also said retailers may reduce the number of items on discount and give less generous price cuts.<\/p>\n<h2>Holiday shopping slowdown<\/h2>\n<p>Dan Peskorse, who runs Upstream Brands, selling products on Amazon and other online platforms, said tariffs are also making him change his Black Friday plans. In past years, Upstream Brands gave up to 30% discounts on their products, including ThinkFit meal-prep bags and Ash Harbor home goods. <\/p>\n<p>But this year, Peskorse said, &#8220;This is the first year that we are not offering across-the-board discounts on products,&#8221; and he said the decision was &#8220;100%&#8221; because of tariffs, as per CBS News. Peskorse has tried to reduce tariff impact by raising prices and absorbing some import costs from China and India, but the only option left to protect profits is to remove discounts.  <\/p>\n<p>Gregory Daco, chief economist at EY-Parthenon, said the average U.S. tariff rate has gone up seven times this year to 16.6 per cent, pushing up import prices. He said retailers are passing part of these higher costs to customers. Along with tariff pressure, many businesses are also facing weaker holiday spending from lower-income shoppers who are still struggling with inflation. <\/p>\n<p><!-- PROMOSLOT_M -->Sonia Lapinsky, retail analyst at AlixPartners, said, &#8220;I think the rubber is going to hit the road when we get into Black Friday,&#8221; explaining that consumers are planning to cut back this year and spend only on essential items. Lapinsky said discounts are the only strong tool to make shoppers buy, noting, &#8220;It&#8217;s the only way retailers will get them in the door, because they can&#8217;t stomach this&#8221;, as stated by CBS News.
