The path does not go upward; it goes down which for some rea\u00adson is a sur\u00adprise. I guess I\u2019m so used to paths in the moun\u00adtains I\u2019m not sure exact\u00adly what to do with one that enters a val\u00adley. I\u2019m car\u00adry\u00ading my cam\u00adera and one wide angle zoom lens hid\u00adden under my rain\u00adcoat. It pours; then unpre\u00addictably changes to sun\u00adbreaks or a fine driz\u00adzle. A few peo\u00adple are exit\u00ading as I enter the trail and then all is qui\u00adet, all except for the water. The rain is com\u00ading down with big drops falling from the trees, syn\u00adco\u00adpat\u00ading the still\u00adness. And behind that music there is anoth\u00ader, also of water, flow\u00ading in rivulets down the\u00a0hill.<\/p>\n

You\u2019ll have to imag\u00adine, if you haven\u2019t walked this path your\u00adself, a thick rain\u00adfor\u00adest, one in a nation\u00adal reserve halfway between Tofi\u00adno and Ucluelet on the west coast of Van\u00adcou\u00adver Island. As I walk into the first part of the trail I stop to read a sign warn\u00ading about wolves in the area. There have been sightings.<\/p>\n

And then the path, bare\u00adly a hun\u00addred yards in and which has been a wide grav\u00adel affair, splits into a loop of con\u00adtin\u00adu\u00adous, kilo\u00adme\u00adter long board\u00adwalk with stairs plung\u00ading down into a for\u00adest that oth\u00ader\u00adwise would be impass\u00adable so dense is the foliage.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Part of me would sure\u00adly wel\u00adcome see\u00ading a wolf. They are preda\u00adtors, of course, and have been known to kill small dogs in the area, but we do under\u00adstand, don\u2019t we, that it\u2019s real\u00adly their<\/em> park, not ours and we might be inter\u00adfer\u00ading with their<\/em> rou\u00adtines. And it also makes me won\u00adder about what kind of instinc\u00adtu\u00adal preda\u00adtor ener\u00adgies still linger in me. I think per\u00adhaps the sign should have read, \u201cWatch for wolves \u2014 you\u2019ll be very lucky if indeed you see one so be smart and grate\u00adful. If you run into them you might want to pick up your chil\u00addren so they can get a bet\u00adter view and so the wolves also know they belong to\u00a0you.\u201d<\/p>\n

I\u2019m walk\u00ading now on the wet board\u00adwalk. I\u2019m not as steady as I used to be and I\u2019m alone so I\u2019m care\u00adful, mea\u00adsur\u00ading what might hap\u00adpen if I slip or trip and fall off into the for\u00adest prop\u00ader. It looks to be the sort of place after a mis\u00adstep that like a Venus Fly\u00adtrap might quick\u00adly close in around you. Nobody said the jour\u00adney was going to be safe exactly.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s not, per\u00adhaps, but it is cer\u00adtain\u00adly per\u00adfect\u00adly beau\u00adti\u00adful. The air is rich with the earth and its min\u00adgling scents of life becom\u00ading and dying. Deep clus\u00adters of ferns, moss\u00ades, mush\u00adrooms; leaves flut\u00adter\u00ading on drenched autumn branch\u00ades and in the rain some also flut\u00adter\u00ading down. The board\u00adwalk goes up and down and down again and down fur\u00adther still into a val\u00adley among the tow\u00ader\u00ading trees, and all the time the sound of water now loud\u00ader as the rivulets con\u00adverge. Once in awhile I can actu\u00adal\u00adly see the water break out of the ferns grow\u00ading thick\u00adly beside it but most\u00adly the plants are so dense it\u2019s just the sound that announces the lit\u00adtle creeks that are pass\u00ading around me or under the board\u00adwalk itself.<\/p>\n

It takes a moment to rec\u00adog\u00adnize the design of the path is an inten\u00adtion\u00adal thing show\u00ading off the lay\u00aders of the forest\u2019s ecol\u00ado\u00adgy and its cycles, at least that seems the theme of the mark\u00aders along the way. It takes a fur\u00adther moment for me to rec\u00adog\u00adnize the oth\u00ader metaphor. I\u2019m going down and deep\u00ader in. My heart seems to slow. I stop and stand and lis\u00adten to the implied refrains. My brain stops hum\u00adming with the usu\u00adal dross of antic\u00adi\u00adpa\u00adtions, con\u00adcerns, plans, what if\u2019s, the con\u00adstant bro\u00adken record of think\u00ading so that now I\u2019ve for\u00adgot\u00adten some of how to do that. I\u2019m see\u00ading again, instead and for real; hear\u00ading\u00a0again.<\/p>\n

A moment fur\u00adther along I look down once more and I see I\u2019m at the bot\u00adtom, cross\u00ading a deep stream black with tan\u00adnins from its run across the decay\u00ading for\u00adest. I look down into that black stream for a long time, merg\u00ading with it per\u00adhaps for an instant or two, and am remind\u00aded I\u2019ve come here to encounter in one more way my own soul. To drink from it is to drink the dark tea of my own life and a larg\u00ader life beyond us\u00a0all.<\/p>\n

After awhile, I am free to move on. The rain is com\u00ading down once more and I try to dry my cam\u00adera as much as pos\u00adsi\u00adble with my shirt and hide the del\u00adi\u00adcate tech\u00adnol\u00ado\u00adgy under my coat. The cam\u00adera, too, is a sym\u00adbol and the lens, but that\u2019s for a lat\u00ader reflection.<\/p>\n

I turn toward the rest of the board\u00adwalk, climb\u00ading the stairs uphill past a cedar thought to be over 800 years old. What must liv\u00ading that long be like? How many crea\u00adtures in that time have rest\u00aded as I am, nes\u00adtled next to its mas\u00adsive roots? We come. We go. And the tree lives on, it\u2019s branch\u00ades in the wind and its roots patient\u00adly gath\u00ader\u00ading min\u00ader\u00adals from the soil for say, 300,000 days.<\/p>\n

I climb more stairs and more. The clouds clear away for the late light of the sea\u00adson. My legs are hurt\u00ading from the climb and I\u2019m sweat\u00ading. I open my coat to a cool, humid breeze. I walk along more eas\u00adi\u00adly, stronger now that the for\u00adest has flat\u00adtened out. Soon I find I\u2019ve com\u00adplet\u00aded the loop. I am think\u00ading now that the design of this path with its stairs and board\u00adwalks, its jour\u00adney down and down to that black stream and then return\u00ading to its ori\u00adgin is also the design of a poem. Per\u00adhaps one day I\u2019ll write one, I say to myself. In the mean\u00adtime I say good\u00adbye and trust that the wolves I did\u00adn\u2019t see were there hid\u00adden all along and heard me whis\u00adtle to them in the fad\u00ading\u00a0light.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
