{"id":321934,"date":"2025-11-27T18:17:55","date_gmt":"2025-11-27T18:17:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peraltafinancing.com\/activist\/groups-challenge-quebec-in-court-over-fur-farm\/"},"modified":"2025-11-27T18:17:55","modified_gmt":"2025-11-27T18:17:55","slug":"groups-challenge-quebec-in-court-over-fur-farm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fivemor.com\/?p=321934","title":{"rendered":"Groups Challenge Quebec in Court Over Fur Farm"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"\">\n<p>MONTREAL\u00a0 \u2013 Two national animal advocacy groups have filed an application for judicial review in Quebec Superior Court, arguing that the provincial government is unlawfully allowing fur farming to continue despite knowing that the practice likely violates Qu\u00e9bec\u2019s animal welfare laws.<\/p>\n<p>Through this lawsuit, Animal Justice and The Fur-Bearers are asking the Court to declare that the government\u2019s failure to take any action to address unlawful animal suffering on fur farms is unreasonable, and to order the government to take action.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Government documents\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/e03570bf749e4e1ea8dc6275e92b5d98\/4\/76f93d11c3acff7672af5a746462e3f91441b56511b6d6b47d320d281151f279?cache_buster=1764186504\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">obtained by the Montreal SPCA<\/a>\u00a0show that since 2022, officials at Minist\u00e8re de l\u2019Agriculture, des P\u00eacheries et de l\u2019Alimentation du Qu\u00e9bec (MAPAQ) have warned that conditions on the province\u2019s fox and mink fur farms do not meet the biological needs of the animals and the industry does not ensure for their welfare.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>An internal report accordingly recommends that fur farming be banned. Officials also acknowledge a ban would have no economic impact as the industry is in steep decline. Quebec\u2019s animal welfare law includes a requirement for fur farms to obtain a permit, but that provision has never been brought into force. The province\u2019s failure to take any steps to oversee or ban fur farming leaves vulnerable animals to endure extreme physical and psychological suffering.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The three<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/e03570bf749e4e1ea8dc6275e92b5d98\/5\/72e06029c8721474cde9fb9ed205f73dbd2e0f232432a87a78894c7e92460b71?cache_buster=1764186504\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u00a0opposition parties in Quebec<\/a>\u00a0have also committed to ban fur farming. While MAPAQ\u2019s own experts recommend ending the practice in the province, the Quebec government has allowed fur farms to keep operating.<\/p>\n<p>Fur farms keep wild fur-bearing animals, such as foxes and minks, confined in tiny, wire-bottomed cages for their entire lives before being killed solely for their pelts. Animals are typically confined in barren, filthy conditions that prevent them from engaging in the most basic natural behaviours. Foxes are killed by anal electrocution\u2014a process known to cause extreme fear and distress.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Because fur farming is inhumane and poses significant zoonotic disease risks, it has been banned by a growing list of countries around the world, including the UK, Italy, Ireland, Norway, and France. British Columbia banned mink fur farming in 2021 following COVID-19 outbreaks at mink fur farms in that province and other jurisdictions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDespite knowing fur farms likely don\u2019t respect Quebec\u2019s own laws, the government has failed to take any action for years. It\u2019s time for the courts to step in,\u201d said Alanna Devine, Montreal-based lawyer and director of advocacy with Animal Justice. \u201cWe are asking the Court to confirm that by turning its back on extreme and unnecessary animal suffering on fur farms, the government has acted unlawfully. Now is the time for Quebec to do the right thing and ban fur farming for good.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is a growing body of scientific evidence and international support for ending fur farming due to the animal welfare, public health, and environmental impacts,\u201d says Lesley Fox, Executive Director at The Fur-Bearers. \u201cQuebec can be a leader in Canada by taking action now to end fur farming provincially.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The lawsuit was filed today in Quebec Superior Court.
