I recently visited my 50th<\/sup> state \u2013 Arkansas.<\/mark>\u00a0<\/mark><\/strong><\/p>\n

While I\u2019ve been a country \u201ccounter\u201d for most of my life, I never really counted States.\u00a0 Several years ago, a friend and I spent a week in New Mexico and I realized I was only 5 states away from visiting them all.\u00a0 At that time, I had not yet been to Oregon, and New England.\u00a0<\/p>\n

That next year, I had to go to Oregon for work.\u00a0 It was destiny.\u00a0<\/p>\n

I was now living on the East Coast again, and the following year, a friend and I planned a Vermont Hiking trip that turned into a New England road trip.\u00a0 And as we headed toward Maine and I started to reminisce about all 50 states, I had a horrifying revelation \u2013 I don\u2019t think I had ever been to Arkansas\u2026. Unless we drove through it when I was a kid living in Kansas or moving from Tennessee to Oklahoma.\u00a0 Of course I\u2019d been to Arkansas!\u00a0<\/p>\n

Turns out \u2013 I hadn\u2019t.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Summer 2024 \u2013 that is the point that something I didn\u2019t care about suddenly became an obsession and a priority.\u00a0 But it still took me over a year to get it together.\u00a0 You can read all about my weekend in Arkansas<\/a> but this post is a look at all 50!<\/p>\n

My First State:\u00a0 Kentucky.<\/mark><\/strong>\u00a0 I was born here but we actually lived across the border in Tennessee.\u00a0 So ironically while it is my first state it is the one where I have spent the least amount of time.\u00a0 \u00a0It does look like there is some beautiful hiking that I\u2019d like to do one day. I have returned to Tennessee twice since I was a toddler. Here is my trip to Memphis a few years ago<\/a>. <\/p>\n

My Last State:\u00a0 Arkansas<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/mark> I really enjoyed my weekend, and you can read all about it here<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

States I\u2019ve Lived In:\u00a0 Alabama, Alaska, Colorado, Kansas, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Utah, Virginia, and North Dakota.<\/mark><\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019ve had the opportunity to live in several states and regions of the country.\u00a0 \u00a0Of these, Alaska and Virginia are definitely my favorites. I\u2019ve written a lot about things to do and see in Virginia<\/a>. <\/p>\n

States I\u2019ve Visited Numerous Times for Work and Family:\u00a0 Hawaii, Maryland, Ohio, Texas, Michigan, and Utah<\/strong>.<\/mark>\u00a0 I think we all have locations that we don\u2019t even think of as travel.\u00a0 We go all the time for work or to visit family.\u00a0\u00a0 I will sometimes visit the sites when here but not always.\u00a0 I\u2019ve only written about Hawaii<\/a> once the last time I was there for work. And here is an example when we decided to spend the day in Cleveland<\/a> for the first time when visiting family nearby.\u00a0<\/p>\n

States I\u2019ve Visited as a Destination:\u00a0 Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Kansas, West Virginia, Delaware, Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Rhode Island, Washington, South Dakota, Wyoming, Nebraska, Tennessee, New York, New Mexico, Illinois, Nevada, North Carolina, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Louisiana, Rhode Island, New Jersey, and Missouri.\u00a0 <\/mark><\/strong>I\u2019ve had some great trips visiting different areas of the country.\u00a0 Check out my week in New Mexico<\/a>, a weekend in New Orleans<\/a> and my New England Road Trip<\/a> last year.\u00a0 I\u2019ve been to both New York City and upstate New York several times. One of my favorite trips was just a silly day in upstate<\/a>. <\/p>\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n

Those States that I\u2019ve Only Driven Through or spent less than 24 hours (at a time):\u00a0 Connecticut, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Minnesota, Mississippi, Montana, South Carolina (I got one of three traffic tickets in my life), and Wisconsin.<\/mark><\/strong>\u00a0 \u00a0It\u2019s funny though \u2013 as an example, it is approximately 5 hours East-West (and reverse) to cross Iowa.\u00a0 And I\u2019ve done this trip at least half a dozen times on multiple routes so in aggregate I\u2019ve spent more time there but never as a destination.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n

States I\u2019d like to return to and spend more time:\u00a0 Montana, Alaska, Maine, Colorado, and New Hampshire.<\/mark><\/strong>\u00a0 It\u2019s interesting to note that I\u2019ve lived in two of these states and still have more I want to do.\u00a0 And of course, I\u2019d like to spend more time and really explore those few states that I haven\u2019t spent as much quality time in.\u00a0 A few years ago, I returned to Colorado after several decades.\u00a0 Here is a look at my trip to visit Garden of the Gods<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Favorite US City:\u00a0 Washington DC.<\/mark><\/strong>\u00a0 As I\u2019ve said often, Washington DC is one of my favorite cities in the world.\u00a0 There is always something new to do and see.\u00a0 And I love walking the National Mall and popping in and out of the free museums.\u00a0 \u00a0If you are planning a trip to DC, I have lots of ideas<\/a> for your next trip.<\/p>\n

Least Favorite State:\u00a0 Utah.<\/mark><\/strong>\u00a0 I just don\u2019t love the desert, the wind and the brown.\u00a0 But Southern Utah does have some magnificent National Parks that are worth visiting.\u00a0 This post is from my last trip to Bryce National Park<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Favorite State: Alaska<\/mark><\/strong>.\u00a0 I loved living in Alaska and would love to return.\u00a0 It may be one of the most beautiful places on the planet and I love mix of wide-open spaces, green, ocean, glaciers, and mountains.\u00a0 One of my favorite adventures was bear watching in Katmai<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Unexpected Destination:\u00a0 West Virginia and Arkansas.<\/mark><\/strong>\u00a0 Both states are beautiful with lots of outdoor activities.\u00a0 They are also a little quirky with their own unique culture and traditions.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Most Visited as a Tourist:\u00a0 California, Florida or Nevada<\/mark><\/strong> (that list is pretty similar to the typical tourist).\u00a0 I haven\u2019t written about California or Nevada but here is a recent look at a girl\u2019s trip to Tampa Florida<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Top of my bucket list:\u00a0 Montana.<\/mark><\/strong>\u00a0 \u00a0Several years ago, through work, I interacted with a lot of international visitors who have the opportunity over a year to visit a lot of the US \u2013 DC, NYC, Boston, Tennessee, San Francisco, Hawaii, New Orleans, Texas, Florida, Montana and many more on their own.\u00a0 Almost unanimously (besides maybe Hawaii) Montana is always their favorite. I\u2019m drawn to the scenery through movies like \u201cA River Runs Through It\u201d and picture myself on the porch of a cabin by the river and the mountains.\u00a0 I\u2019d love to visit Glacier National Park.\u00a0 <\/p>\n

I realize this post didn\u2019t provide a lot of detail or recommendations.\u00a0 But I offer it as an example that every state or destination won\u2019t be equal.\u00a0 It\u2019s hard to \u201ccount\u201d.<\/mark><\/strong>\u00a0 Ironically, I\u2019ve had a meal in every state except maybe where I was born.\u00a0 But how do you not count the state on your birth certificate?!\u00a0I discuss the art of \u201ccounting\u201d in this older post<\/a>. How many days or hours do you need to count it? Can you just visit one area or do you need to see multiple parts of the location? <\/p>\n

It is also interesting to reflect in order to understand your own values.<\/mark><\/strong>\u00a0 All of the states I\u2019d like to return to and spend more time are due to nature and the outdoors.\u00a0 Those states reflect places that I\u2019ve spent years and places that I\u2019ve only been for a single night.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Similar to my post about my 100th<\/sup> country<\/a>, I say this to emphasize IT ALL COUNTS<\/strong>.\u00a0 It all counts if it helps you explore the world and learn more about yourself.\u00a0<\/p>\n

P.S.\u00a0 My next goal is the 5 US territories.\u00a0 I find their distinct history and culture fascinating.\u00a0 I\u2019ve been to three of the five.\u00a0 The U.S Virgin Islands should be fairly easy but American Samoa will be trickier.\u00a0 But that is half the fun!\u00a0 Wish me luck!<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
