{"id":32080,"date":"2025-01-16T22:48:45","date_gmt":"2025-01-16T22:48:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peraltafinancing.com\/arborist\/balsam-poplar-native-tree-of-the-week\/"},"modified":"2025-01-16T22:48:45","modified_gmt":"2025-01-16T22:48:45","slug":"balsam-poplar-native-tree-of-the-week","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fivemor.com\/?p=32080","title":{"rendered":"Balsam Poplar | Native Tree Of The Week"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Balsam Poplar<\/h2>\n<p>As Old Man Winter once again sends his frosty chill across Ontario and we seek refuge from the cold, <a href=\"https:\/\/devostree.ca\">DeVos Tree Care<\/a> talks about a native tree that isn\u2019t chilled at all by Hamilton\u2019s winter, a tree that can take even more frigid environments.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Balsam Poplar Description<\/h2>\n<p>Populus balsamifera, also commonly referred to as a poplar, balm poplar, black poplar, tacamahac, and balm of Gilead, is a medium-sized tree that is distributed through our nation from the Atlantic Coast and northern Quebec across to the Yukon and eastern British Columbia.<\/p>\n<p>The Balsam Poplar grows eagerly in Hamilton\u2019s climate zone 6, but the tree is also suited to harsher temperatures, excelling as far north as zone 2 and lending credibility to the Balsam Polar\u2019s reputation as one of the toughest and most adaptable deciduous hardwood trees in Ontario.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"366\" height=\"599\" src=\"https:\/\/devostree.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/balsam-poplar-leaf.png\" alt=\"balsam poplar leaf\" class=\"wp-image-756\" srcset=\"https:\/\/devostree.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/balsam-poplar-leaf.png 366w, https:\/\/devostree.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/balsam-poplar-leaf-183x300.png 183w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 366px) 100vw, 366px\"\/><\/figure>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Balsam Poplar features<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The leaves of the balsam poplar are heart-shaped with razored edges and a hard taper near the point of the leaf, and they grow up to 7-10 centimeters long. Dark green leaf coloring surrenders in the fall to a golden yellow color.<\/p>\n<p>Before leaves appear in the spring, male balsam poplars produce long catkins and females produce cotton-esque seed bunches similar to their cousin in the Willow family, the Cottonwood. The catkins and cotton-esque seed bunches are the tree?s way of flowering. The tree\u2019s balsam, or its resinous sap, comes from its buds, and is sometimes used as a hive disinfectant by bees.<\/p>\n<p>Leaves and resin from the <a href=\"https:\/\/devostree.ca\/category\/native-tree-of-the-week\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">tree were also used by First Nations peoples<\/a> for poultices and salves, and gum from the tree is used in many of today\u2019s skin care products. Balsam poplars can live to 70 years old or more, their bark changing from a brownish-green when they\u2019re younger to a scaly grey in old age. Firewood from a healthy tree does not crackle and produces clean smoke.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/devostree.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/balsam-poplar-flower.jpg\" alt=\"balsam poplar flower\" class=\"wp-image-757\" srcset=\"https:\/\/devostree.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/balsam-poplar-flower.jpg 640w, https:\/\/devostree.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/balsam-poplar-flower-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/devostree.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/balsam-poplar-flower-510x382.jpg 510w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\"\/><\/figure>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Planting a Balsam Poplar<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Balsam Poplars are fast growing trees that thrive in full sunlight and are tolerant of both wet and dry conditions. Often grown as a shade tree, they can tolerate some urban pollution and the lower branches can be removed to allow human traffic underneath the tree\u2019s canopy.<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t plant under power lines since the tree can grow up to 25 meters tall, and be prepared to do some cleanup when the tree drops its flowers.<\/p>\n<p>Also plan on having the tree pruned regularly; the best time for pruning is late winter after the most extreme temperatures have passed.
