[Thanksgiving
\nis a hugely
\nfraught holiday<\/a> for us AmericanStudiers, but I also have a ton I\u2019m
\nthankful for<\/a>. So this year I wanted to combine those two perspectives by
\nhighlighting indigenous voices, past and present, for whose contributions to
\nour collective conversations I\u2019m profoundly appreciative!]<\/p>\n

As was the
\ncase with yesterday\u2019s subject William Apess, Sarah Winnemucca is a figure about
\nwhom I\u2019ve had the chance to write a good deal:<\/span><\/p>\n

As a
\ncentral part of this We\u2019re History
\npiece<\/a> on Malheur in Oregon.<\/span><\/p>\n

As the
\nfocus of a chapter in my book Redefining
\nAmerican Identity: From Cabeza de Vaca to Barack Obama<\/a><\/i> (2011).<\/span><\/p>\n

And
\nnumerous times on this blog, including here<\/a>
\non how reading her autoethnographic book changes our sense of the West, here<\/a>
\nas a context for one of my favorite TV characters, and here<\/a>
\nas part of a post on fraught and crucial questions of \u201cauthenticity\u201d and
\nidentity. <\/span><\/p>\n

There\u2019s a
\nlot that I love about Winnemucca\u2019s voice, as captured so powerfully in that
\naforementioned book, Life Among the
\nPiutes: Their Wrongs and Claims<\/a><\/i> (1883). But most of all I love the way she
\ncombines self-reflection and humility with pride and confidence, blends her hugely
\ncomplex individual story with impassioned activism, recognizes the most multilayered
\nrealities yet refuses to allow them to stop her work. We can see that with
\nparticular clarity in the book\u2019s final final two sentences: \u201cFinding it
\nimpossible to do any thing for my people I did not return to Yakima, but after
\nI left Vancouver Barracks I went to my sister in Montana. After my marriage to
\nMr. Hopkins I visited my people once more at Pyramid Lake Reservation, and they
\nurged me again to come to the East and talk for them, and so I have come.\u201d I\u2019m
\nso grateful that she did!<\/span><\/p>\n
