Culture.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s the food we eat,<\/p>\n

The songs we sing,<\/p>\n

Something we cannot escape.<\/p>\n

Something to which we can all relate.<\/p>\n

Differences.<\/p>\n

Culture doesn\u2019t\u00a0and shouldn\u2019t look the same to everyone,<\/p>\n

So why do we expect that?<\/p>\n

Why do we mock what we aren\u2019t familiar with?<\/p>\n

\u201cEw\u201d they say, \u201cyour food smells.\u201d<\/p>\n

Why do we allow ourselves to become insecure from others\u2019 ignorance?<\/p>\n

\u201cMummy, I can\u2019t wear this. It\u2019s not \u2018cool\u2019. It\u2019s ugly.\u201d<\/p>\n

Why hide our culture away,\u00a0like secrets,<\/p>\n

Like deep sea pearls in clam shells?<\/p>\n

Instead of raising our heads up high, taking a stand, using our voices to edify.<\/p>\n

Culture is something we can\u2019t escape.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s in every one of us; whether we like it or not,<\/p>\n

Ashamed or proud,<\/p>\n

Whether we want to whisper or shout it out loud.<\/p>\n

Culture is the glue in our society,<\/p>\n

What makes us unique.<\/p>\n

So whether you wear a lehenga or a tunic,<\/p>\n

A tracht or an agbada,<\/p>\n

A kebaya or a pollera,<\/p>\n

A kaftan or a muumuu \u2014<\/p>\n

Remember, you\u2019re blessed to be <\/p>\n

A member of this multicultural society.<\/p>\n

Culture isn\u2019t something you can escape,<\/p>\n
