Sure it looks easy \u2014 put on a necklace, add another, and then another. But is it though? Have you ever tried layering necklaces before? Wow, so hard. There\u2019s like an artform to it \u2014 and then there\u2019s the tangling factor \u2014 and the differing lengths. Ugh \u2014 way harder than first thought.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m about to reveal some necklace layering secrets I\u2019ve been stashing away for years. Follow these easy rules and you\u2019ll be on your way to the coolest, chicest, non-messy neck mess you\u2019ve ever seen.<\/p>\n<p><b>1. Start with a basic<\/b><\/p>\n<p>This is the only time you\u2019ll hear me ask you to be basic. I bet you already have a classic chain \u2014 you know the ones that usually come with a pendant or charm, typically 16\u2033 or 18\u2033 in length \u2014 yes, those! This will act as your foundation to your layered look. I suggest hanging sentimental charms from this chain; pieces from your travels, your favorite colors, anything that makes you happy. Please don\u2019t wear something your ex-boyfriend gave you.<\/p>\n<p><b>2. Add differing lengths<\/b><\/p>\n<p>A key to a successful necklace look is wearing different length chains. Have you ever seen someone wearing 10 necklaces, all the same length? No, because it would be a tangled ball of hot garbage. I suggest buying these key lengths: choker, 16\u2033, 18\u2033, 20\u2033, 24\u2033, 30\u2033 and in various chain styles, which leads to our next rule\u2026<\/p>\n<p><b>3. Add unique chain styles (differing textures)<\/b><\/p>\n<p>More texture equals less tangle! Tattoo that into your mind, or on your body, that\u2019s fine with me. But seriously, this is so important. There are so many unique chain styles out there, we encourage you to adopt some favorites and rock them. Figaro, mariner, ball, rope, snake, herringbone, paperclip, rolo\u2026these aren\u2019t just random words, they\u2019re chain style names. Google them, learn them, love them.<\/p>\n<p><b>4. Finish off with some symmetry\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p>So you have your basic chain with some charms, a totally different style chain that\u2019s either longer or shorter\u2026now repeat this however many times you\u2019d like. Once you\u2019ve gotten a look you love, before you call it \u2014 add one more finishing touch, a bib-style, festoon, or station necklace. Symmetry is important with layering, so this style of necklace adds dimension both vertically and horizontally.\u00a0 We like a Cleopatra-style necklace for this or even a diamond-dangle station necklace.<\/p>\n<p>Get creative and have fun with this! Looking on Instagram offers TONS of inspiration (I like the hashtag #neckmess or #gemgossipneckparty). Once you\u2019ve gotten masterful of the above rules, start playing more with color-coordinating or creating themes.
