{"id":318059,"date":"2025-11-25T12:42:19","date_gmt":"2025-11-25T12:42:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peraltafinancing.com\/uncategorized\/milkshakes-and-lattes-to-be-hit-with-sugar-tax-wes-streeting-announces-politics-news\/"},"modified":"2025-11-25T12:42:19","modified_gmt":"2025-11-25T12:42:19","slug":"milkshakes-and-lattes-to-be-hit-with-sugar-tax-wes-streeting-announces-politics-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fivemor.com\/?p=318059","title":{"rendered":"Milkshakes and lattes to be hit with sugar tax, Wes Streeting announces | Politics News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<br \/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/e3.365dm.com\/25\/11\/1920x1080\/skynews-wes-streeting-commons_7091443.jpg?20251125122222\" \/><\/p>\n<div data-component-name=\"ui-article-body\" data-testid=\"article-body\" data-highlight-intro=\"true\">\n<p>Milkshakes and lattes will be hit with a sugar tax for the first time in a bid to tackle obesity, Health Secretary Wes Streeting has said.<\/p>\n<p>The levy will apply to packaged drinks, not those made in cafes and restaurants.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Streeting confirmed the measure in the Commons on Tuesday, telling MPs: &#8220;Obesity robs children of the best possible start in life, hits the poorest hardest, sets hem up for a lifetime of health problems and costs the NHS billions.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;So, I can announce to the house we&#8217;re expanding the soft drinks industry levy to include bottles and cartons of milkshakes, flavoured milk and milk substitute drinks.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Milk-based drinks are currently exempt from the soft drinks levy, also known as a sugar tax.<\/p>\n<p>This came into force in 2018 and applies to drinks with at least 5g of sugar per 100ml.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Streeting said that as well as extending the levy to milk-based products, the government will lower the threshold at which it can apply &#8211; to 4.5 grams of sugar per 100ml.<\/p>\n<p>He said: &#8220;This government will not look away as children get unhealthier and our political opponents urge us to leave them behind.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>There has been a 46% reduction in sugar in fizzy drinks since the original tax came into force, with 89% of soft drinks sold in the UK now not paying the charge due to reformulation.<\/p>\n<p>Modelling studies have found that this may have prevented thousands of cases of childhood obesity and reduced tooth decay.<\/p>\n<p>However, the Labour government said UK sugar intakes remain about double the recommended level and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/sugar-tax-could-be-applied-to-milkshakes-to-tackle-obesity-13357997\" target=\"_blank\">launched a consultation in April to extend the tax.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The measure will be included in Rachel Reeves&#8217;s budget on Wednesday, when the chancellor is expected to announce a series of smaller tax rises to fill a \u00a330bn blackhole, after <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/budget-2025-income-tax-u-turn-what-the-hell-just-happened-13470226\" target=\"_blank\">scrapping a plan to raise income tax.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>This breaking news story is being updated and more details will be published shortly.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Please refresh the page for the latest version.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>You can receive breaking news alerts on a smartphone or tablet via the <a href=\"https:\/\/qrcode.skynews.com\/skynews\/appdownload\"><strong>Sky News app<\/strong><\/a>. <\/em><em><em>You can also <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.whatsapp.com\/channel\/0029Va868Fv8vd1UsF99tP1u\"><em><strong>follow us on WhatsApp<\/strong><\/em><\/a><em> and subscribe to our <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/skynews\"><em><strong>YouTube channel<\/strong><\/em><\/a><em> to keep up with the latest news.<\/em><\/em><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Milkshakes and lattes will be hit with a sugar tax for the first time in a bid to tackle obesity, Health Secretary Wes Streeting has said.
