It would be great to live in a world when polls and the College Football Playoff Committee actually did respect strength of schedule, then reward <em>big wins<\/em> in a way to actually encourage more meaningful inter-P4-conference games (and just more interesting football in general).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">But that\u2019s not the world we live in: we\u2019re in the one where Texas is essentially out of the playoff for daring to schedule Ohio State out of conference. (Assuming CFP behaviors don\u2019t change, can we cancel our future series with them, please?). And we\u2019re also in the one where I wish we\u2019d just played some G5 team in Week 1 instead of FSU.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">So, in the here-and-now, I have to enjoy these games. We won big! We got to see some young players play! We didn\u2019t have to cross our fingers to see if Germie would bail us out on 3rd and long in the 4th quarter! And given how the rest of the Tide\u2019s schedule is, I\u2019ll gladly take a game like this in 2025.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">The \u2018usual graphs\u2019 and the box score look hilarious this week \u2014 I mean, it was a 56-0 blowout over a wayyy overmatched FCS opponent \u2014 so instead let\u2019s just pluck the charts that show some interesting developments.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">For one, <strong>Alabama\u2019s run game was steadier than the pass, and we leaned it on it throughout the game.<\/strong> Sure, both ended up averaging out at absolutely <em>charming <\/em>&gt;60% SR\u2019s, but the passing game took some twists and turns along the way before catching back up in the third quarter. (Queue the \u201cbackup QB conspiracy,\u201d except which would you even choose?)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">Really, this trend basically amounts to Ty missing a pass late in the first quarter, then dumping off to A.K. Dear twice for two \u201cunsuccessful catches\u201d (too short). But it\u2019s remarkable that the running game, albeit against a very overmatched defense, was very, <em>very<\/em> steady.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">Let\u2019s take a look at the cast and crew:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">That is a loooong rushers list!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--block-placement jgpyd51 jgpyd50 duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<ul class=\"duet--article--unordered-list _1nfb3k4i feuejx0 ls9zuh1\">\n<li class=\"feuejx1\"><span class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup\"><strong>Jam Miller<\/strong> lead the way in attempts, with respectable efficiency and the <em>lone explosive <\/em>from a tailback ( \u2026 interesting)<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"feuejx1\"><span class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup\"><strong>A.K. Dear<\/strong> and <strong>Kevin Riley<\/strong> both showed up consistently and very efficiently<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"feuejx1\"><span class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup\">Transfer <strong>Dre Washington<\/strong> doesn\u2019t seem to have found a role yet, and his performance in this game, whether his fault or not, doesn\u2019t suggest we\u2019ll see much of him in Crimson.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"feuejx1\"><span class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup\"><strong>Richard Young<\/strong> and <strong>Daniel Hill<\/strong> each had a few totes, with Young looking good again against bad competition. Hill got came up slow on one play; I\u2019m <em>really<\/em> hoping that\u2019s nothing<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"feuejx1\"><span class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup\"><strong>The QB\u2019s<\/strong> got in on the action, with <strong>Austin Mack<\/strong> and <strong>Keelon Russell<\/strong> getting 2\/2\u2019s and <strong>Ty<\/strong> going 1\/2. Mack had an explosive scramble-TD in there.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"feuejx1\"><span class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup\">\u201cUnconventional rushers\u201d <strong>Lotty Brooks<\/strong> and <strong>Kadyn Proctor <\/strong>were unsuccessful on their attempts.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"feuejx1\"><span class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup\">We have players with last names \u201c<strong>Carruth<\/strong>\u201d and \u201c<strong>Gazzaniga<\/strong>\u201d on our team. Carruth had a successful rush!<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">Still surprisingly \u2014 <em>in a bad way <\/em>\u2014 we only had two explosive rushes on the day, including the one from QB Austin Mack. <em>What is going on there? <\/em>It\u2019s such a strange whiplash from the Jalen Milroe era, where \u201cexplosive QB rush\u201d was sometimes the only play working.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">For the first time I can recall, we actually had <em>fewer receivers <\/em>in this chart than the number of <em>rushers<\/em> in the other. Usually you expect something like a 1.5-2x ratio of receivers to rushers.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">And the first name up on this list is a surprising one: <strong>TE Marshall Pritchett <\/strong>is apparently (suddenly) an important target for us now that <strong>Josh Cuevas<\/strong> is out for an undetermined amount of time. (So much for my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollbamaroll.com\/post\/ywE9xHTUYS1j\">untimely celebrations of his last few games<\/a>). Assuming we do see Pritchett against Auburn, hopefully he\u2019s similarly able to pull some of these down and convert for us.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">Also from the TE position group, we saw RS Senior <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/rolltide.com\/sports\/football\/roster\/brody-dalton\/16231\">Brody Dalton<\/a> <\/strong>come down with 3\/3 Successful catches. Freshman <strong>Kaleb Edwards <\/strong>also had an explosive grab but wasn\u2019t seen much otherwise. (We really need some of these other TE to get healthy). Another RS Senior <a href=\"https:\/\/rolltide.com\/sports\/football\/roster\/mj-chirgwin\/13774\"><strong>MJ Chirgwin<\/strong><\/a> (technically a WR) also recorded a successful catch. <strong>Roll Tide, Seniors!<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">Otherwise, it was a deeper rotation of the WR\u2019s than usual \u2014 <strong>Isaiah Horton<\/strong> and <strong>Jaylen Mbakwe<\/strong> (1 successful + 1 explosive catch each), <strong>Cole Adams<\/strong> (2), <strong>Rico Scott<\/strong> (1), and <strong>Ryan Williams<\/strong> (1X).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">And then RB\u2019s <strong>Kevin Riley<\/strong> and <strong>A.K. Dear<\/strong> caught passes out of the backfield (though Dear\u2019s didn\u2019t work out, at least by efficiency). <strong>Kevin Riley<\/strong> in particular had a strong game again: hopefully he\u2019s turning another corner and our offensive staff is figuring out better ways to use him. He\u2019s had a few big catches especially (the TD vs. Mizzou comes to mind), so it feels like there\u2019s continued opportunity with him.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\"><em>Hey, let\u2019s just do <strong>all<\/strong> the player charts!<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">There are plenty of caveats \u2014 hail Mary INT, vanilla offense, likely some \u2018looking ahead\u2019 \u2014 but <strong>Ty Simpson <\/strong>had a so-so day given competition. He did complete 4 explosive passes (plus 5 more successful ones) in only 16 passes (25% XR), which would win a lot of games. But these once-rare interceptions are rearing their head at the worst time of the season.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">Backups <strong>Austin Mack<\/strong> and <strong>Keelon Russell<\/strong> seemed to \u201ctrade drives\u201d from there. Mack came in first and looked good \u2014 I mean, that\u2019s 5\/5 Successful Passes! \u2014 but interestingly Russell got more attempts (with a few unsuccessful ones, but also an explosive, in there). You have to wonder if these guys are basically \u201cboth QB2,\u201d which genuinely makes me wonder what who would. go in if, say, Ty got hurt or (<em>shudders<\/em>) did poorly enough against Auburn to get pulled.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">Hopefully we don\u2019t have to see much of either, but I can\u2019t help but be optimistic about both guys. (With that optimism for Austin Mack, perhaps, being more like \u201che\u2019ll be a great 2026 QB for someone out of the portal\u201d).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\"><em>Hey look, the Bama defense did a better job stopping the opponent on short yardage!<\/em> Oh, wait \u2026 actually, the opponent <em>never got any short yardage attempts<\/em>, which is bonkers. I guess the Panthers\u2019 only first downs were from longer distance (including that embarrassing 3-and-15 early on).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">Eastern Illinois\u2019 Rush\/Pass trends chart almost looks like a piece of abstract art. <em>Think we can auction it to pay for the #refunds?<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">Truly a sad and beautiful thing here, with the rare successful play <em>lifting <\/em>a Success Rate line before letting it drift, like a well-made paper airplane, gently to the earth.
