<\/span>Unfortunately, insurance companies are driven by profits, not people (albeit\u00a0<\/span>they have\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>people\u00a0<\/span>to form\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>profits). If the\u00a0<\/span>insurance firm\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>can find a legal reason\u00a0<\/span>to not\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>pay a claim,\u00a0<\/span>likelihood is that\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>they’re going to\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>find it, and you\u00a0<\/span>the buyer\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>will suffer. However, what\u00a0<\/span>most of the people\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>fail\u00a0<\/span>to understand\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>is that there are\u00a0<\/span>only a few\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>“loopholes” in an\u00a0<\/span>policy\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>that give the\u00a0<\/span>insurance firm\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>an unfair advantage over\u00a0<\/span>the buyer\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>. In fact, insurance companies\u00a0<\/span>attend\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>great lengths to detail\u00a0<\/span>the restrictions\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>of their coverage by giving the policy holders 10-days (a 10-day free look period) to review their policy. Unfortunately,\u00a0<\/span>most of the people\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>put their insurance cards in their wallet and place their policy\u00a0<\/span>during a\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>drawer or\u00a0<\/span>file\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>during their 10-day free look and\u00a0<\/span>it always\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>isn’t until they receive a “denial” letter from the\u00a0<\/span>insurance firm\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>that they take their policy\u00a0<\/span>bent\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>really read through it.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The majority\u00a0<\/span>of individuals\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>, who buy their own\u00a0<\/span>insurance\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>, rely heavily on the\u00a0<\/span>insurance broker\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>selling the policy\u00a0<\/span>to elucidate\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>the plan’s coverage and benefits. This being the case, many individuals who purchase their own\u00a0<\/span>insurance\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>plan can tell you\u00a0<\/span>little or no\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>about their plan,\u00a0<\/span>aside from\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>, what they pay in premiums\u00a0<\/span>and the way\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>much\u00a0<\/span>they need\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>to pay to satisfy their deductible.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n

For many consumers, purchasing a\u00a0<\/span>insurance\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>policy on their own\u00a0<\/span>are often\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>a huge\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>undertaking. Purchasing a\u00a0<\/span>insurance\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>policy\u00a0<\/span>isn’t\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>like buying a car, in that,\u00a0<\/span>the customer\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>knows that the engine and transmission are standard,\u00a0<\/span>which\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>power windows are optional. A\u00a0<\/span>insurance\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>plan\u00a0<\/span>is far\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>more ambiguous, and\u00a0<\/span>it’s\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>often very difficult for\u00a0<\/span>the buyer\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>to work out\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>what\u00a0<\/span>sort of\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>coverage is standard and what other benefits are optional. In my opinion,\u00a0<\/span>this is often\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>the first\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>reason\u00a0<\/span>that the majority\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>policy holders\u00a0<\/span>do not realize\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>that\u00a0<\/span>they are doing\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>not have coverage for\u00a0<\/span>a selected\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>medical treatment until they receive\u00a0<\/span>an outsized\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>bill from the hospital stating that “benefits were denied.”<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Sure, we all complain about insurance companies, but we do know that they serve a “necessary evil.” And,\u00a0<\/span>albeit\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>purchasing\u00a0<\/span>insurance\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>could also be\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>a frustrating, daunting and time consuming task, there are certain things\u00a0<\/span>that you simply\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>simply\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>can do as a consumer\u00a0<\/span>to make sure\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>that you are purchasing\u00a0<\/span>the sort\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>of\u00a0<\/span>insurance\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>coverage\u00a0<\/span>you actually\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>need at\u00a0<\/span>a good\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>price.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Dealing with small business owners\u00a0<\/span>and therefore the\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>self-employed market,\u00a0<\/span>I even have\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>come to\u00a0<\/span>the belief\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>that\u00a0<\/span>it’s\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>extremely difficult for people\u00a0<\/span>to differentiate\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>between\u00a0<\/span>the sort\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>of\u00a0<\/span>insurance\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>coverage that they “want”\u00a0<\/span>and therefore the\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>benefits they really “need.” Recently,\u00a0<\/span>I even have\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>read various comments on different Blogs advocating health plans\u00a0<\/span>that provide\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>100% coverage (no deductible and no-coinsurance) and, although I agree that those\u00a0<\/span>sorts of\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>plans have\u00a0<\/span>an excellent\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>“curb appeal,” I can tell you from personal experience that these plans\u00a0<\/span>aren’t\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>for everybody\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>. Do 100% health plans offer the policy holder greater peace of mind? Probably. But\u00a0<\/span>may be a\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>100%\u00a0<\/span>insurance\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>plan something\u00a0<\/span>that the majority\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>consumers really need? Probably not! In my professional opinion,\u00a0<\/span>once you\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>purchase a\u00a0<\/span>insurance\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>plan,\u00a0<\/span>you want to\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>achieve a balance between four important variables; wants, needs, risk and price.\u00a0<\/span>a bit like\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>you’d\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>do if you were purchasing options for\u00a0<\/span>a replacement\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>car,\u00a0<\/span>you’ve got\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>to weigh\u00a0<\/span>of these\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>variables before you spend your money. If\u00a0<\/span>you’re\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>healthy, take no medications\u00a0<\/span>and infrequently\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>attend\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>the doctor,\u00a0<\/span>does one\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>actually need\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>a 100% plan with a $5 co-payment for\u00a0<\/span>prescribed drugs\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>if it costs you $300 dollars more a month?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Is it worth $200 more a month\u00a0<\/span>to possess\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>a $250 deductible and a $20 brand name\/$10 generic Rx co-pay versus an 80\/20 plan with a $2,500 deductible that also offers a $20 brand name\/$10generic co-pay after you pay a once a year $100 Rx deductible? Wouldn’t the 80\/20 plan still\u00a0<\/span>provide you with\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>adequate coverage? Don’t\u00a0<\/span>you think that\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>it might\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>be better\u00a0<\/span>to place\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>that extra $200 ($2,400 per year) in your\u00a0<\/span>checking account\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>, just\u00a0<\/span>just in case\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>you’ll\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>need to\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>pay your $2,500 deductible or buy a $12 Amoxicillin prescription? Isn’t it wiser\u00a0<\/span>to stay\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>your hard-earned money\u00a0<\/span>instead of\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>pay higher premiums to an insurance company?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Yes, there are\u00a0<\/span>some ways\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>you’ll\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>keep more of\u00a0<\/span>the cash\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>that you simply\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>would normally give to an\u00a0<\/span>insurance firm\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>within the\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>sort of\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>higher monthly premiums.\u00a0<\/span>for instance\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>, the\u00a0<\/span>federal\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>encourages consumers\u00a0<\/span>to get\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>H.S.A. If there\u00a0<\/span>are not any\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>claims that year\u00a0<\/span>the cash\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>that was deposited into the tax deferred H.S.A\u00a0<\/span>are often\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>rolled over to\u00a0<\/span>subsequent\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>year earning\u00a0<\/span>a good\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>higher rate of interest. If there\u00a0<\/span>are not any\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>significant claims for several years (as\u00a0<\/span>is usually\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>the case) the insured\u00a0<\/span>finishes up\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>building a sizeable account that enjoys similar tax benefits as\u00a0<\/span>a standard\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>I.R.A. Most H.S.A. administrators now offer thousands of no load mutual funds to transfer your H.S.A. funds into so\u00a0<\/span>you’ll\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>potentially earn\u00a0<\/span>a good\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>higher rate of interest.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n

In my experience,\u00a0<\/span>i think\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>that individuals who purchase their health plan\u00a0<\/span>supported\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>wants\u00a0<\/span>instead of\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>needs feel\u00a0<\/span>the foremost\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>defrauded or “ripped-off” by their\u00a0<\/span>insurance firm\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>and\/or\u00a0<\/span>insurance broker\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>. In fact, I hear almost identical comments from almost every business owner that I speak to. Comments, such as, “I\u00a0<\/span>need to\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>run my business,\u00a0<\/span>i do not\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>have time to be sick! “I think\u00a0<\/span>I even have\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>gone to the doctor 2 times\u00a0<\/span>within the\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>last 5 years” and “My\u00a0<\/span>insurance firm\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>keeps raising my rates\u00a0<\/span>and that i\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>don’t even use my insurance!” As a business owner myself, I can understand their frustration. So, is there\u00a0<\/span>an easy\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>formula\u00a0<\/span>that everybody\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>can follow\u00a0<\/span>to form\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>insurance\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>buying easier? Yes! Become an INFORMED consumer.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n

So what\u00a0<\/span>does one\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>think happens almost 100% of the time\u00a0<\/span>once I\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>ask these individuals “BASIC”\u00a0<\/span>questions on\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>their\u00a0<\/span>insurance\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>policy?\u00a0<\/span>they are doing\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>not know the answers!\u00a0<\/span>the subsequent\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>may be a\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>list of 10 questions that I frequently ask a prospective\u00a0<\/span>insurance\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>client.\u00a0<\/span>let’s examine\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>what percentage\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>you’ll\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>answer without\u00a0<\/span>watching\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>your policy.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Now\u00a0<\/span>that you’ve got\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>read through the list of questions that I ask a prospective\u00a0<\/span>insurance\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>client, ask yourself\u00a0<\/span>what percentage\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>questions you were\u00a0<\/span>ready to\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>answer. A “great” agent gives\u00a0<\/span>you adequate\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>information to weigh all of your options so\u00a0<\/span>you’ll\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>make an informed purchasing decision.
