We\u2019ve all been there. Staring
\nat a blank canvas (or a digital screen) paralysed by the pressure to create
\nsomething amazing, something that will turn heads and go viral on social media,
\nmaybe it will even become your best selling work, something that today seems
\nalmost secondary to the social vibe many want their work to create.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

In this creative quest for
\nexternal validation in whatever form it takes, we often lose sight of something
\nthat is crucial to becoming a successful artist: authenticity.<\/span><\/p>\n

Being an authentic artist
\nisn\u2019t about churning out masterpieces as if you were the sole employee of a Temu
\nproduction line, it\u2019s about challenging your unique experiences, emotions, and
\nperspectives and bringing those challenges into your work. It\u2019s about creating
\nart that resonates, not with the people, but with YOU first. Do that and you
\nwill finally allow that genuineness shine through.<\/span><\/p>\n

One question I\u2019m always asked
\nby new artists is what the best selling subject is. What genre of work sells
\nbetter than anything else, what sells quickly, and for a hefty chunk of my
\ncareer I prescribed to finding out the answers to those questions too. <\/span><\/p>\n

The answer was always landscapes,
\nabstracts and nudes. They\u2019ve been forever staples of the art world and they do
\nsell in huge numbers, but the honest truth is, if you have asked the question
\nabout what art sells best and only pursue financial rather than artistic
\nsuccess, your work probably won\u2019t sell either. Inner expression generates far
\nmore success for artists than technique.<\/span><\/p>\n

There\u2019s a good chance that
\nI\u2019ve never seen your work, but the reason I make the overly harsh point that no
\nmatter how good it is it probably won\u2019t sell, is that there are millions upon
\nmillions of artists all asking that very same question and then beavering away
\nfor years to produce a body of landscape or abstract work that will lead them
\nto the fabled road of financial success. Art careers rarely if ever, happen
\nquite like that.<\/span><\/p>\n

Selling art without a plan
\nmeans that your competition becomes the majority of artists who have got a plan
\nand the likes of Walmart, or Amazon or the galleries with the biggest and best
\nmarketing teams. If you\u2019re creating art for arts sake, it becomes silenced in
\nthe wider noise.<\/span><\/p>\n

Feeling lost in the cacophony
\nof the art world? Trying to copy others for success feels like a recipe for
\nburnout, you really do have to work so much harder to be better than the artist
\nyou\u2019re trying to copy, and they\u2019ll already have the benefit of being first. What
\nif the secret weapon you’ve been overlooking is right there within you? Being
\nyourself is not just easier, it’s the key to creating art that truly resonates.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

Authenticity Breeds
\nOriginality:<\/span><\/b> When you tap into your own well of
\ninspiration, you’re less likely to simply mimic trends or copy others. Your art
\nbecomes a reflection of your inner world, something that is truly
\none-of-a-kind.<\/span><\/p>\n

Authenticity Fuels Passion:<\/span><\/b>
\nCreating art that feels forced is a recipe for burnout. But when you’re pouring
\nyour heart and soul onto the canvas, the creative fire burns bright.
\nAuthenticity keeps the joy of creating alive.<\/span><\/p>\n

Authenticity Connects with
\nOthers:<\/span><\/b> People can sniff out inauthenticity a mile away. But
\ngenuine art, born from your lived experience, has the power to connect with
\nothers on a deeper level. It sparks conversations, evokes emotions, and creates
\na bridge between artist and audience.<\/span><\/p>\n

Dig Deep:<\/span><\/b>
\nExplore your thoughts, feelings, and experiences. What are you passionate
\nabout? What are you struggling with? Let your art be a vessel for your inner
\nworld.<\/span><\/p>\n

Experiment Without Fear:<\/span><\/b> Don’t
\nbe afraid to try new things, even if they feel messy or unconventional. Embrace
\nthe exploration of your art, and let it guide you to your unique voice and
\nremember, you can\u2019t make an omelette without breaking an egg.<\/span><\/p>\n

Seek Inspiration Everywhere:<\/span><\/b> Don’t
\nlimit yourself to traditional art forms. Look for inspiration in music, films,
\nnature, or even everyday life. Whenever I plan out my creations, I like to plan
\nout a series of work and this always means that I have to carry out research
\nbecause I mostly create works depicting specific periods of technology, popular
\nculture and innovation from the 1970s through to the early 2000\u2019s. The upside
\nof this is not only do I learn more about what I depict in my work, it fuels
\ncreativity and gives me plenty of ideas for future work. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Create a Mood Board:<\/span><\/b>
\nCollect images, textures, colors, or anything that evokes a strong emotional
\nresponse. Use it as a reference point for your artwork. Remember when
\ncollecting pictures and photographs, it\u2019s important to not only focus on
\nperfection, find photos and images that show the subjects with imperfections
\ntoo.<\/span><\/p>\n

Experiment Without Judgment:<\/span><\/b> Don’t
\nbe afraid to try new techniques, mediums, or styles. The more you experiment,
\nthe more you’ll discover what resonates with you.<\/span><\/p>\n

Embrace Imperfections:<\/span><\/b>
\nPerfectionism can stifle creativity. Learn to see “mistakes” as
\nopportunities for happy accidents to coin a phrase used by Bob Ross, and view
\neach mistake as a unique expression. You might be surprised just how many happy
\nmistakes you then consciously go on to leave in your work!<\/span><\/p>\n

Let the Art Flow:<\/span><\/b>
\nSometimes the best way to find your voice is to simply create without
\noverthinking. Allow yourself to be guided by intuition and let the art flow
\nnaturally. I liken this to meditation, it is very much a Full vs. Calmer
\nLake:<\/b> “Think of your mind as a lake. During meditation, you’re not
\ntrying to remove all the water (thoughts). Instead, the goal is to calm the
\nsurface so you can see what lies beneath.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Silence the Critics (Inner and
\nOuter):<\/span><\/b> It’s easy to get caught up in the opinions of others, both
\nonline and in the real world. But remember, your art is yours. Trust your gut,
\nand never be afraid to create something different. It really is okay to be
\nweird, or wacky, and if it hasn\u2019t already been done, you already own the genre!<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

Limit Comparisons:<\/span><\/b>
\nSocial media can be a double-edged sword. While it can inspire, it can also
\nlead to comparison. Take breaks and focus on your own artistic journey.<\/span><\/p>\n

Find Your Support System:<\/span><\/b>
\nSurround yourself with people who encourage your artistic exploration and
\ncelebrate your individuality, but also remember that a support system shouldn\u2019t
\njust be about positive reinforcement. You need to find an authentic support
\nsystem that challenges you too. Art really is about growing your individuality.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

Inner Exploration: <\/span><\/b>Journaling
\nis a great way to delve into your thoughts and feelings. Write freely about
\nyour experiences, emotions, and what sparks your creative fire. You don\u2019t have
\nto share this with anyone else, but it sometimes helps. You could create a blog
\nwhich would give you an incentive to carry on, inner exploration is a tough
\nprocess for anyone but blogging can give you both a platform and an audience
\nthat holds you to account.<\/span><\/p>\n

Mind Maps and Brainstorming: <\/span><\/b>Visually
\nexplore your interests and passions. Create mind maps or brainstorm different
\nthemes and concepts that resonate with you. Remember, your theme doesn\u2019t have
\nto fit neatly into a box, you need to be selfish when doing this, this is your
\nstory, your art, you need to own it.<\/span><\/p>\n

Embrace Your Story: <\/span><\/b>Don’t
\nbe afraid to infuse your artwork with your personal experiences and
\nperspectives. This vulnerability can make your art all the more powerful.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Being authentic isn’t always
\neasy. It requires self-discovery, vulnerability, and a healthy dose of courage,
\nin fact these are the same things that make an artist an artist in the first
\nplace. You need to be both bold and brave, and you need to learn to react to
\nwhat your gut feeling is telling you to do. To reuse an overused clich\u00e9, authenticity
\nis a journey, not a destination. It takes time and practice to truly find your
\nartistic voice, and that\u2019s fine. It will give you time to develop as an artist
\nbut also as a person, and you will need to keep doing this over and over
\nthroughout your career, people change, that\u2019s fine. It\u2019s a good thing.<\/span><\/p>\n

In my experience over the many
\nyears I have been creating, this really is the best path to creating art that
\nis not only meaningful to you, it allows you to create art that has the power
\nto move and inspire others. So, embrace your true voice, and let your art be a
\nreflection of the beautiful, messy, sometimes chaotic and utterly unique person
\nyou are.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n
