But if sharing the truth is a crime, what does that say about what\u2019s inside?<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What the industry tries to bury<\/h2>\n<p>Grocery store packaging paints a picture of clean barns, open fields, and content animals. But behind that image lies an industry protected by wealth, political influence, and strategic marketing.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/animalequality.org\/news\/2019\/11\/19\/usda-under-fire-for-pig-slaughter-oversight\/\">Government oversight is weak<\/a>. Inspections are infrequent and often announced ahead of time. Regulators routinely look the other way.<\/p>\n<p>In many cases, the only accountability comes from investigators who endure dangerous conditions, threats of retaliation, and even violence to reveal the truth.<\/p>\n<p>Animal Equality has documented conditions across the globe, uncovering:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Cows skinned alive<\/strong> in Brazilian slaughterhouses<\/li>\n<li><strong>Pigs dumped into scalding tanks<\/strong> while conscious in Mexico<\/li>\n<li><strong>Calves frozen to the ground<\/strong> in the U.S.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Dismembered piglets <\/strong>scattered across farms in Italy<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Other findings include illegal deforestation, toxic waste endangering communities, and wet markets teeming with public health risks.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/animalequality.org\/all-investigations\/\"><strong>Explore the full archive of investigations<\/strong><\/a><strong>.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Where did ag-gag laws come from?\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>First introduced in the 1990s, ag-gag laws surged after a 2011 investigation revealed cruelty to piglets at Hormel Food in Iowa.<\/p>\n<p>In response, Iowa lawmakers quickly passed legislation to block similar investigations.<\/p>\n<p>Other states followed suit. <strong>Many of these laws are still in effect today.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Do ag-gag laws violate your rights?<\/h2>\n<p>Free speech advocates say \u2018yes.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Investigative journalist Will Potter\u2013who has spent years challenging these laws\u2013says they suppress vital information about animal abuse, worker safety, environmental harm, and civil rights violations.<\/p>\n<p>In 2021, Animal Equality joined a lawsuit against Arkansas\u2019s ag-gag law. While the case was initially dismissed, a federal appeals court reinstated it. The court agreed: the public has a right to question laws that restrict access to information.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Several ag-gag laws have since been struck down.
