{"id":314397,"date":"2025-11-24T00:28:40","date_gmt":"2025-11-24T00:28:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peraltafinancing.com\/uncategorized\/brazilian-revelers-at-rios-pride-march-rejoice-after-bolsonaros-preemptive-jailing\/"},"modified":"2025-11-24T00:28:40","modified_gmt":"2025-11-24T00:28:40","slug":"brazilian-revelers-at-rios-pride-march-rejoice-after-bolsonaros-preemptive-jailing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fivemor.com\/?p=314397","title":{"rendered":"Brazilian revelers at Rio&#8217;s Pride march rejoice after Bolsonaro&#8217;s preemptive jailing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<br \/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/twt-thumbs.washtimes.com\/media\/image\/2025\/11\/23\/Brazil_Pride_Parade_70247_s1440x960.jpg?f72536d07237fdd262042ae8f5e6e6de3b865f3c\" \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>RIO DE JANEIRO \u2014 Thousands of revelers descended on the boardwalk in Copacabana for Rio de Janeiro\u2019s annual Pride parade on Sunday, with many celebrating the previous day\u2019s preemptive jailing of Brazilian former President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/jair-bolsonaro\/\">Jair Bolsonaro<\/a> who is notorious for homophobic remarks.<\/p>\n<p>Demonstrators addressing crowds from trucks shouted: \u201cHe\u2019s in prison!\u201d and \u201cOut with Bolsonaro!\u201d to raucous cheers from rainbow-clad members of the LGBTQ+ community, who were a frequent target of the embattled far-right politician throughout his career.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s very gratifying,\u201d said Emy Mateus Santos, a 25-year-old arts, theater and dance professor who was wearing a T-shirt with the colors of the Brazilian flag, a symbol that has frequently been used by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/jair-bolsonaro\/\">Bolsonaro<\/a> supporters.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt shows that fighting hate is worth it and that the future is possible for people like us,\u201d she said, adding that she was wearing yellow and green to claim the colors back from Bolsonaro\u2019s movement.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/jair-bolsonaro\/\">Bolsonaro<\/a> once described himself as a \u201cproud homophobe\u201d and said he would rather have a dead son than a gay son.<\/p>\n<p>In September, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/jair-bolsonaro\/\">Bolsonaro<\/a> was sentenced to 27 years in prison in September for attempting a coup to remain in the presidency after his 2022 electoral defeat.<\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/multimedia\/collection\/brazilian-revelers-rios-pride-march-2025-11\/\" target=\"_blank\">PHOTOS: Brazilian revelers at Rio\u2019s Pride march rejoice after Bolsonaro\u2019s preemptive jailing<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<hr style=\"margin-bottom: 15px;\"\/>\n<p>He had been under house arrest, but on Saturday Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes ordered the 70-year-old leader\u2019s preemptive jailing, arguing that he is a flight risk. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/jair-bolsonaro\/\">Bolsonaro<\/a> admitted Saturday to using a soldering iron on his ankle monitor, but said on Sunday that his actions resulted from a nervous breakdown and hallucinations.<\/p>\n<aside>\n<\/aside>\n<p>Some participants of the Pride march in Rio bore \u201cNo amnesty!\u201d stickers, in reference to a bill <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/jair-bolsonaro\/\">Bolsonaro\u2019s<\/a> allies are trying to push through Congress to lessen sentences for those convicted of attempting a coup.<\/p>\n<p>Revelers collectively carried a huge rainbow flag. Trucks bore messages such as \u201cwithout lesbians, rights are not human\u201d and \u201cRio without LGBTIphobia.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rio\u2019s Pride march 30 years ago was the first in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/brazil\/\">Brazil<\/a>, according to organizers. That history was referenced in this year\u2019s theme titled: \u201c30 years making history: from the first struggles for the right to exist to building sustainable futures.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThirty years ago we had to make 1000 masks out of papier-m\u00e2ch\u00e9 for people who didn\u2019t want to be recognized for fear of losing their jobs, of being kicked out from their families,\u201d said Cl\u00e1udio Nascimento, a longtime organizer of the march.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow we use masks to bring joy and to celebrate our existence,\u201d he told journalists.<\/p>\n<p>While life has improved for LGBTQ+ people in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/brazil\/\">Brazil<\/a> compared to 30 years ago, they continue to suffer from violence.<\/p>\n<p>At least 291 LGBTQ+ Brazilians were victims of violent deaths in 2024, 34 more deaths than the previous year, according to the activist group Gay Group from Bahia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs long as these statistics are still a reality, Pride marches will still be necessary,\u201d said Fla\u0301vio Salgueiro, a 34-year-old lawyer who lives in Sao Paulo and was at the march in Rio.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s really important to show that a united community exists in a society which has a project to erase us,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Many activists say Bolsonaro\u2019s anti-gay rhetoric incites or legitimizes violence against LGBTQ+ people.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a politician, Bolsonaro greatly reduced public policies aimed at protecting, supporting and promoting diversity,\u201d Dani Balbi, the first trans woman to be elected at Rio\u2019s state assembly, told The Associated Press.<\/p>\n<p>                        <a name=\"pagebreak\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cSeeing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/jair-bolsonaro\/\">Bolsonaro<\/a> imprisoned and then immediately having LGBT trucks out on the street is a celebration in the hope that politicians like him never return,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<div class=\"permission\" style=\"padding-top: 25px;\">\n<p>Copyright \u00a9 2025 The Washington Times, LLC.\n                        <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>RIO DE JANEIRO \u2014 Thousands of revelers descended on the boardwalk in Copacabana for Rio de Janeiro\u2019s annual Pride parade on Sunday, with many celebrating the previous day\u2019s preemptive jailing of Brazilian former President Jair Bolsonaro who is notorious for homophobic remarks.
