Either they suffered a health issue, needed to care for a loved one or lost their job.<\/p>\n<p>Instead of the 20 to 30 \u201cgolden years\u201d of earlier generations, workers today are potentially looking at retirements that span 40 years or more.<\/p>\n<p>The Manulife study said many of the retirees in its study were surprised at how expensive retirement was and how fast they were going through their savings.<\/p>\n<p>And also, fewer had a formal retirement plan than Canadians who retired later and 11 per cent had no income other than government pensions, compared with 6 per cent of those who retired when planned.<\/p>\n<div>\n<section class=\"story-v2-content-element article-content__content-group article-content__content-group--story\">\n<p><span style=\"color: #555555;\">Some other interesting stats and takeaways from the study:<\/span><\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<ul>\n<li><b>The Older You Get, The More Planning You Do:<\/b>\u00a0Retirement planning becomes an increased priority as survey members age, with 49% of Baby Boomers having a retirement plan as opposed to just 26% of Millennials.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><b>The Confidence Divide:\u00a0<\/b>Gen Z is the least confident generation financially, with 48% feeling that their finances are fair or poor, compared to 40% for Millennials, Gen X, and Baby Boomers.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><b>Inflation Worries Everyone:\u00a0<\/b>Across Gen Z, Millennials, Gen X, and Baby Boomers, inflation remains a persistent worry. At least 50% or more of respondents from each cohort say they are worried about inflation and the cost of living.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Maybe not unlike the study, which I did not participate in, I have similar retirement concerns so I don\u2019t think I\u2019m alone\u2026<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>How bad could inflation get over time \u2013 will my portfolio keep up?<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Will I overspend?<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>What does my health\/healthcare look like long-term?<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>What extended rate of returns should I expect?<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We have our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.myownadvisor.ca\/financial-independence-budget\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Financial Independence Budget here that includes some of those assumptions<\/a> and I will update that post in the spring of 2026 when retirement starts for both of us\u2026<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"wydhgyRBNe\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.myownadvisor.ca\/financial-independence-budget\/\">Financial Independence Budget<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe class=\"wp-embedded-content lazyload\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"\u201cFinancial Independence Budget\u201d \u2014 My Own Advisor\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.myownadvisor.ca\/financial-independence-budget\/embed\/#?secret=GVsI8OcHet#?secret=wydhgyRBNe\" data-secret=\"wydhgyRBNe\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><em>Do you have the same concerns? Did you have the same concerns when you retired?<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><strong>More Weekend Reading \u2013 Beyond are you ready for a 40-year retirement?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Passionate DIY investor and dividend investor Henry Mah wrote about <a href=\"https:\/\/risingyieldoninvestments.blogspot.com\/2025\/11\/retirement-spending-go-go-slow-go-and.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">his go-go, slower-go and no-go retirement spending years. An interesting take from someone that has been there, done that.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Why he loves investing in about 10-12 Canadian stocks in his 80s:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI prefer having the choice of being able to decide if and when, I wish to spend less. Better yet, I like not having to worry about spending more during retirement, because I earn more income than we need. I also don\u2019t need to sell capital to cover our retirement expenses, and even when I have sold shares to gift, or donate, my investment income hasn\u2019t suffered. In fact, we do sell capital, fairly large amounts of capital, and our retirement investment income continues to meet our needs, without needing to cut our living expenses. Go figure?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>I like money market funds in my\/our registered accounts for cash equivalents for the same reasons Christine Benz from Morningstar does:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-32710 size-full aligncenter lazyload\" src=\"https:\/\/www.myownadvisor.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Christine-Benz-on-Money-Market-Funds.png\" alt=\"Christine Benz on Money Market Funds\" width=\"892\" height=\"331\"\/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-32710 size-full aligncenter lazyload\" src=\"https:\/\/www.myownadvisor.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Christine-Benz-on-Money-Market-Funds.png\" alt=\"Christine Benz on Money Market Funds\" width=\"892\" height=\"331\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.myownadvisor.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Christine-Benz-on-Money-Market-Funds.png 892w, https:\/\/www.myownadvisor.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Christine-Benz-on-Money-Market-Funds-300x111.png 300w, https:\/\/www.myownadvisor.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Christine-Benz-on-Money-Market-Funds-600x223.png 600w, https:\/\/www.myownadvisor.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Christine-Benz-on-Money-Market-Funds-768x285.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 892px) 100vw, 892px\"\/><\/p>\n<p>A good\u00a0<em>Globe\u00a0<\/em>Financial Facelift article here (subscription), in that the retiree, Tammy, age 64, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/investing\/personal-finance\/financial-facelift\/article-with-nearly-33-million-in-savings-whats-the-most-tax-efficient-way-for\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">seriously needs to accelerate her significant $1.75M in RRSP assets very soon<\/a> unless she wants a higher tax bill later in life. The article is an excellent reminder that <strong>RRSP\/RRIF assets are meant to be spent<\/strong> such that ideally taxation is smoothed-out over many spending years, to offer you the ability to spend any non-registered or TFSA assets as you please.
