It looks likely the work will be started here in Brazil and then <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org.au\/news\/everything-to-play-for-says-greenpeace-as-chris-bowen-arrives-in-brazil-for-cop30\/\">handed to the next COP host<\/a> to finish the job. In other words, if Australia prevails in its bid to host COP31 in partnership with Pacific, we may be set for a showdown on fossil fuels in Australia next year.<\/p>\n<p>More on that later. Let\u2019s first look at a couple of highlights from week one in Bel\u00e9m.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Truth to power<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>COP is about more than the two weeks of technical negotiations behind closed doors. Each year, global civil society shows up in force to keep our governments accountable and to show the world what a stronger, safer future looks like.<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday of the first week, over 5,000 people aboard 200 boats, including our Rainbow Warrior, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/press-release\/79779\/greenpeace-joins-over-40000-marching-belem-calling-forest-climate-action-cop30\/\">took to the river<\/a> to demonstrate against false climate solutions and to show that the answer to a sustainable world lies with the ancestral knowledge and practices of Indigenous peoples and local communities.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org.au\/static\/planet4-australiapacific-stateless\/2025\/11\/2562d73d-gp0su7eor_low-res-800px.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-25590\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org.au\/static\/planet4-australiapacific-stateless\/2025\/11\/2562d73d-gp0su7eor_low-res-800px.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org.au\/static\/planet4-australiapacific-stateless\/2025\/11\/2562d73d-gp0su7eor_low-res-800px-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org.au\/static\/planet4-australiapacific-stateless\/2025\/11\/2562d73d-gp0su7eor_low-res-800px-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org.au\/static\/planet4-australiapacific-stateless\/2025\/11\/2562d73d-gp0su7eor_low-res-800px-510x340.jpg 510w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Greenpeace joined over 200 vessels in Bel\u00e9m, in a symbolic act to open the People\u2019s Climate Summit at COP 30. Different social movements joined the action, entitled \u201cFrom the Amazon to the World: End Inequality and Environmental Racism, Climate Justice Now!\u201d \u00a9 Filipe Bispo \/ Greenpeace<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>This was followed at the end of the week with a powerful <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org.au\/news\/make-polluters-pay-greenpeace-joins-over-40000-marching-in-belem-calling-for-climate-forest-action-at-cop30\/\">40,000-strong \u2018Great People\u2019s March\u2019<\/a> through the streets of Bel\u00e9m \u2013 a joyous and defiant demonstration led by Indigenous peoples of the Amazon and pulsing with songs, dances and a deafening call for climate justice.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org.au\/static\/planet4-australiapacific-stateless\/2025\/11\/7294812a-gp0su7fnn_low-res-800px.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-25591\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org.au\/static\/planet4-australiapacific-stateless\/2025\/11\/7294812a-gp0su7fnn_low-res-800px.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org.au\/static\/planet4-australiapacific-stateless\/2025\/11\/7294812a-gp0su7fnn_low-res-800px-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org.au\/static\/planet4-australiapacific-stateless\/2025\/11\/7294812a-gp0su7fnn_low-res-800px-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org.au\/static\/planet4-australiapacific-stateless\/2025\/11\/7294812a-gp0su7fnn_low-res-800px-510x340.jpg 510w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">At the end of the first week of COP30, Greenpeace joined thousands of people at the Global Climate March in Bel\u00e9m.  \u00a9 Filipe Bispo \/ Greenpeace<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Setting the stage for a COP31 fossil fuel showdown<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Two years ago, at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/story\/64386\/cop28-signal-fossil-fuel-industry\/\">COP28 in Dubai<\/a>, the world finally agreed to \u201ctransition away from fossil fuels\u201d. The problem? Since then, fossil fuel consumption has only increased, pushing global climate pollution to new highs and unleashing even more destruction. <strong>The mining and burning of fossil fuels accounts for around 70% of global climate pollution.<\/strong> It is by far the biggest contribution to the climate crisis.<\/p>\n<p>We need countries to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org.au\/news\/actionable-outcome-not-a-roadmap-to-nowhere-needed-at-cop30\/\">develop a concrete action plan<\/a> to make good on that landmark commitment made back in 2023. One agreed by all countries, and with deadlines and assurances that adequate support will be there to support poorer countries and communities through the transition. Right now, this is all on the table here in Bel\u00e9m. But many of the deeply entrenched political divisions that have hampered this process for over three decades remain. As we go into week two, there is a lot at stake and a lot to play for.<\/p>\n<p>One possible outcome is that countries will agree here to begin working on a roadmap for transitioning away from fossil fuels, with that work then taken up by the host of COP31. While we are still (after nearly three years!) waiting for the decision on who will host COP31, the odds are still on for a COP hosted in Australia, in partnership with the Pacific.<\/p>\n<p>This could present a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org.au\/article\/hosting-cop31-a-critical-opportunity-for-australia-and-the-pacific\/\">huge opportunity to accelerate the transition away from fossil fuels<\/a>. Most of the growth in fossil fuel consumption is in Asia, and Australia is one of the major suppliers of coal and gas to the region. Meanwhile, the Pacific is leading the fight to phase out fossil fuels and limit warming to 1.5\u00baC. <strong>Done right, COP31 can be a catalyst that drives the phase out of fossil fuels not only in Australia but across Asia and the wider world.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Leadership from the frontlines<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>An action plan on fossil fuels will be part of a larger <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-international-stateless\/2025\/10\/6a44ca0e-policy-briefing-cop30.pdf\">package of measures to help close the gap<\/a> between countries\u2019 current national climate plans and what the science tells us is necessary to limit warming to 1.5\u00baC.<\/p>\n<p>When we arrived in Bel\u00e9m, addressing the 1.5\u00baC \u2018emissions gap\u2019 wasn\u2019t even on the table. Fortunately, an early push by the Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS) helped ensure this became part of the agenda. The question, as so often at COP, is <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org.au\/news\/everything-to-play-for-says-greenpeace-as-chris-bowen-arrives-in-brazil-for-cop30\/\">will Australia and other big polluters finally get behind the leadership of Pacific Island nations and back a plan that can ensure a safer future for all.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Adelaide or Antalya?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Finally, with each day comes another rumour on whether Australia has managed to cut a deal with T\u00fcrkiye over who will host COP31.<\/p>\n<p>One of the first sights on entering the cavernous conference venue is the Australian and Turkish pavilions, which the organisers have placed side by side, butting up against one another. In the coded language of UN gatherings, this literally screams \u201cyou guys need to talk!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sadly, as we enter the all-important second week of COP, we seem no closer to knowing.<\/p>\n<p>The one thing we do know is that a COP31 held in Australia, if it is a true partnership with the Pacific, will be the biggest opportunity we\u2019ve ever had to force a fossil fuel phase out here in Australia, and to play an outsized role in the world\u2019s response to the climate crisis.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re keeping our fingers crossed and will be in touch as soon as there is any news!<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>At COP30 in Bel\u00e9m, countries are busy discussing a new \u2018roadmap\u2019 to guide the transition away from coal, oil and gas.
