Like this: Does This New Treatment for Canine Hemangiosarcoma Work?<\/strong> But, that\u2019s become kind of a comical online news click-bait thing. Whenever you see a title like that, just assume the answer is NO. Seriously. The question is provocative. The answer is almost, always no. Instead, let\u2019s look at a couple of papers that describe an experimental treatment for canine hemangiosarcoma, using something called eBAT. One looked somewhat promising. The other, with more rounds of treatments, did not. <\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is Canine Hemangiosarcoma?<\/h3>\n<p>Canine hemangiosarcoma is an aggressive, fatal form of cancer that most often develops in a dog\u2019s spleen \u2014 but it can show up other places too, including the heart and other blood-rich areas of the body. <\/p>\n<p>Often only discovered at an advanced stage, most dogs (50+%) diagnosed with hemangiosarcoma die within 4-6 months. Nearly 90% of die within a year. It\u2019s bad. <\/p>\n<p><strong>We lost our yellow lab mix, Cody, to it decades ago, and it\u2019s devastating. <\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-medium-font-size is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>We\u2019ve written about it before, where researchers in North Carolina are looking at a <a href=\"https:\/\/championofmyheart.com\/hemangiosarcoma-dogs\/\">possible link between hemangiosarcoma in dogs and Bartonella bacteria.<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is eBAT?<\/h3>\n<p>eBat is an abbreviation for epidermal growth factor bispecific ligand-targeted angiotoxin. It\u2019s a newish drug for sarcomas that targets both the tumor itself and the new blood vessels that feed the tumor. <\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What About the Promising eBAT Study in 2017?<\/h3>\n<p>So, the <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/28193671\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">study published in 2017\u2026<\/a><\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Featured just 23 dogs<\/li>\n<li>Tested the administration of 3 eBAT infusions after surgery to remove the dogs\u2019 spleens<\/li>\n<li>Then, administered standard chemotherapy (doxorubicin)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The researchers report that nearly 70% of the dogs in the study survived to the 6-month mark. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/championofmyheart.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/canine-hemangiosarcoma-update-2017-study-quote-1-1024x1024.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-32292\" srcset=\"https:\/\/championofmyheart.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/canine-hemangiosarcoma-update-2017-study-quote-1-1024x1024.png 1024w, https:\/\/championofmyheart.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/canine-hemangiosarcoma-update-2017-study-quote-1-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/championofmyheart.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/canine-hemangiosarcoma-update-2017-study-quote-1-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/championofmyheart.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/canine-hemangiosarcoma-update-2017-study-quote-1-768x768.png 768w, https:\/\/championofmyheart.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/canine-hemangiosarcoma-update-2017-study-quote-1.png 1080w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><\/figure>\n<p><strong>And, 5 of the dogs survived beyond 450 days, which is really something. I only know one dog with hemangiosarcoma who lived more than a year. <\/strong><\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"640\" src=\"https:\/\/championofmyheart.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/canine-hemangiosarcoma-update-2017-study-quote-2-1-1024x640.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-32299\" srcset=\"https:\/\/championofmyheart.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/canine-hemangiosarcoma-update-2017-study-quote-2-1-1024x640.png 1024w, https:\/\/championofmyheart.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/canine-hemangiosarcoma-update-2017-study-quote-2-1-300x188.png 300w, https:\/\/championofmyheart.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/canine-hemangiosarcoma-update-2017-study-quote-2-1-768x480.png 768w, https:\/\/championofmyheart.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/canine-hemangiosarcoma-update-2017-study-quote-2-1.png 1080w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><\/figure>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What About the Later eBAT Study Published in 2020?<\/h3>\n<p>Well, that\u2019s where things didn\u2019t go so well. The <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/32187827\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2020 study\u2026<\/a><\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Featured 25 dogs <\/li>\n<li>Bumped up the eBAT treatments to 3 full cycles <\/li>\n<li>Shortened the time between the eBat treatments and the other chemotherapy (doxorubicin)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>And, the results were not good. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Cancer persisted in the dogs, and 6 of the dogs developed significant and really low blood pressures. Plus, the high survival rate seen in the earlier study vanished. <\/p>\n<p>So, basically, doing more eBAT treatments didn\u2019t make things better and sort of made things worse. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/championofmyheart.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/canine-hemangiosarcoma-update-2020-study-quote-1-1024x1024.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-32296\" srcset=\"https:\/\/championofmyheart.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/canine-hemangiosarcoma-update-2020-study-quote-1-1024x1024.png 1024w, https:\/\/championofmyheart.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/canine-hemangiosarcoma-update-2020-study-quote-1-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/championofmyheart.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/canine-hemangiosarcoma-update-2020-study-quote-1-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/championofmyheart.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/canine-hemangiosarcoma-update-2020-study-quote-1-768x768.png 768w, https:\/\/championofmyheart.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/canine-hemangiosarcoma-update-2020-study-quote-1.png 1080w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><\/figure>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Does That Mean, Then, for Treatment Options of Canine Hemangiosarcoma?<\/h3>\n<p>It means that the use of eBAT is promising, but there\u2019s still a lot of to figure out before we\u2019d ever really see it as a wide-spread treatment option for dogs with hemangiosarcoma. I wish I had better news, but I don\u2019t. <\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-medium-font-size is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>The authors of the second paper said this: \u201cFurther work is needed to understand the precise mechanisms of action of eBAT in order to optimize its clinical benefits in the treatment of canine haemangiosarcoma and other tumours.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It\u2019s tempting to give this a title in the form of a question.
