In light of the current war between Israel and Hamas, I thought it would be a good time to revisit Psalm 83\u2014an ancient and often overlooked prophecy attributed to the prophet Asaph (2 Chron. 29:30).\u00a0<\/p>\n

Written during a time of peace and prosperity, Psalm 83, specifically verses 4-8, talks about the formation of a ten-member confederacy in an attempt to obliterate Israel from the map:<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cThey have said, \u2018Come, and let us cut them off from being a nation, that the name of Israel may be remembered no more.\u2019 For they have consulted together with one consent; they form a confederacy against You: The tents of Edom and the Ishmaelites; Moab and the Hagrites; Gebal, Ammon and Amalek; Philistia with the inhabitants of Tyre; Assyria also has joined with them.\u201d (Psalm 83:4-8)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n

The chart below outlines the nations and individuals mentioned in these verses, along with their contemporary counterparts:<\/p>\n

Interestingly, the confederacy appears to comprise Israel\u2019s immediate surrounding and hostile Muslim Arab neighbors, including prominent terrorist organizations like Hamas<\/b> and Hezbollah, who presently express the same hateful attitude toward Israel as described in Psalm 83!<\/p>\n

The rest of the Psalm (verses 9-18) is a prayer for Israel\u2019s victory. In Psalm 83:9-11, the defeat of the Arab confederacy is compared to Israel\u2019s past victories in Judges 4-8, which permanently ended oppression from the Midianites and Canaanites. This suggests that once the confederates in Psalm 83 are defeated, they will no longer oppress Israel.<\/p>\n

Psalm 83: A Pending Prophecy<\/h3>\n

Some prophetic scholars argue that Psalm 83 represents nothing more than an imprecatory prayer of lament concerning Israel\u2019s historical enemies.\u00a0However, this perspective overlooks the fact that Israel had many more enemies than the ten nations listed in verses 6-8, while also missing the very specific details and habitation conditions in this prophecy (e.g., Psalm 83:8 indicates that one member of the confederacy actually needs assistance in the battle).<\/p>\n

Others argue that Israel\u2019s 1948 or 1967 wars fulfilled this prophecy. Yet, in 1948, more nations were involved than those listed in the Psalm;[1]<\/sup><\/a> and the tents (refugees or military encampments) of Edom, mentioned in Psalm 83:6, only came into existence in the aftermath of this war.[2]<\/sup><\/a> While it\u2019s possible that the 1967 conflict fulfilled the prophecy, none of the attacking nations in 1967 ceased to permanently oppress Israel, nor did any of them turn to Yahweh as their God (Ps. 83:18).<\/p>\n

Since Psalm 83 appears to be a prophetic psalm and the conflict it describes has never fully occurred in history, we can understand that some future war will fulfill it. In fact, many see the Psalm 83 war as a prelude to the Gog-Magog war described in Ezekiel 38-39, where Russia and a coalition of mostly Islamic nations launch an invasion of Israel.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

There are two main reasons for this:<\/div>\n

  1. The Gog-Magog confederacy in Ezekiel 38:1-6 does not comprise any Arab states sharing a border with Israel, even though these are the most conspicuous enemies of Israel today. The fact that the Ezekiel invaders would have to cross over what is now largely Arab-controlled areas suggests that Israel\u2019s adversaries may have already been dealt with or defeated.

    None of the Psalm 83 confederates are listed in Ezekiel 38:1-6, despite being mentioned in other parts of the book.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/li>\n

  2. The Gog-Magog war is expected to occur when Israel is dwelling \u201csecurely\u201d and \u201cwithout walls\u201d (Ezek. 38:8,11). Today, Israel relies on a 430-mile-long, 25-foot-high wall to deter terrorists, and it is not dwelling securely (yashab betach<\/i> in Hebrew). It\u2019s important to note that yashab betach<\/i> does not imply confidence in one\u2019s military defense capabilities but rather security through military victory, based on its historical biblical usage.[3]<\/sup><\/a> Ezekiel 28:26 states Israel \u201cwill dwell securely [yashab betach<\/i>], when I [God] execute judgments on all those\u00a0around them who despise them<\/b>.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\n

    The war described in Psalm 83 might also be connected to, or lead to, the fulfillment of other end time\u00a0prophecies. These include the destruction of Damascus (Isa. 17, Jer. 49:23-27), forthcoming confrontations involving Egypt and Jordan with Israel (Isa. 19:1-18, Jer. 49:1-6, Zeph. 2:8-9, Ezek. 25:14), and the expansion of Israel\u2019s borders (Obad. 1:19-20, Jer. 49:2, Zeph. 2:9, Isa. 19:18).<\/p>\n

    Conclusion<\/h4>\n

    End time experts often focus on the Gog-Magog war as the next major end time war in the Middle East, but it\u2019s important not to overlook the one described in Psalm 83. If this interpretation proves accurate, Israel could be drawn into what prophecy expert Bill Salus calls a \u201cclimactic, concluding Arab-Israeli war\u201d prior to the Gog-Magog event.<\/p>\n

    The current conflict with Hamas may well set the stage for this prophetic war should it escalate to involve additional nations. In any case, the ever strengthening relationships between Russia and the nations in Ezekiel 38, coupled with intelligence reports linking support from Iranian and Russian intelligence to the Hamas attack, all point to a probable fulfillment of the Gog-Magog war in the near future!<\/p>\n

    By the way, did you know that the term \u201cHamas\u201d is the same word used in Genesis 6:11 and Genesis 6:13 to describe the violence prevalent on Earth just prior to the Flood? Is this simply a coincidence? Take a look at the Hebrew interlinear text below.<\/p>\n

    UPDATE (31\/10\/23):\u00a0<\/b>The Houthis of Yemen launched missiles and drones at Israel on October 19 and October 31, threatening more attacks unless Israel halts its campaign against Hamas militants in Gaza.[4]<\/sup><\/a> It\u2019s worth noting that the Ishmaelites in Psalm 83:6 may also encompass the nation of Yemen.[5]<\/sup><\/a><\/div>\n
