I had people who paid me $15,000 a speech to talk about online trends. But we\u2019ve also <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.penelopetrunk.com\/2009\/04\/29\/6-tips-for-being-a-ceo-without-ruining-your-kids\u2019-lives-i-hope\/\">had electricity turned off<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.penelopetrunk.com\/2021\/06\/27\/the-three-types-of-independence-everybody-needs\/\">run out of food<\/a> because you can never predict when a source of online income will disappear, and as an influencer it\u2019s almost impossible to get a job \u2014 because your brand is too big for someone else\u2019s brand. Here\u2019s what I\u2019ve learned about having a platform pulled out from under me:<span id=\"more-21584\"\/><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/><\/span><strong>You go through a mourning process<\/strong><br \/><b\/>I have<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/penelopetrunk\"> 100K followers on Twitter<\/a> but I haven\u2019t been able to log into my account for a year. This is not the first time I\u2019ve been locked out. I was hacked a few years earlier, <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.penelopetrunk.com\/2018\/09\/26\/are-you-there-twitter-its-me-penelope\/\">and I got my account back<\/a>, but I lost all my tweets. Twitter wasn\u2019t always about news and snark. I gained my followers writing about my kids\u2019 daily lives, like a diary. And I lost it all.<br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/><\/span>When it comes to Twitter I\u2019ve gone through the five stages of grief:<br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/><\/span>Denial (I\u2019ll get it back)<br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/><\/span>Anger (Elon Musk is ruining my life)<br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/><\/span>Bargaining (maybe I could sue Twitter in small claims court for lost income, and then, when we meet in court, I just ask them to reset my password)<br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/><\/span>Depression (I\u2019m exhausted and I\u2019m never going to gain an audience again, anywhere)<br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/><\/span>Acceptance (Am I there? I\u2019m not sure, because I\u2019m still writing about it, right?)<br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/><\/span><strong>You can be fired with no notice even if you\u2019re self-employed<\/strong><br \/>But I\u2019ve been here before. I used to be one of the most popular writers on Yahoo Finance. (You\u2019re probably thinking: <em>Yahoo?!?!?! Who cares about that?\u00a0<\/em>But trust me, this is what people are going to think about TikTok in five years.) I cross posted every weekly Yahoo column on my own blog and once a month my site would go down from traffic overload. Also, Yahoo paid me $2,500 per post, which could support my family.<br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.penelopetrunk.com\/2007\/12\/27\/how-to-deal-with-getting-fired-from-yahoo\/\">Then Yahoo\u00a0fired me with no notice<\/a>. The reason was that advertisers paid a lot on Yahoo Finance, but I wasn\u2019t finance-y enough for them. Luckily, I had been posting on my own site as well, and I kept doing that, but I lost tons of traffic.<br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/><\/span><strong>The referrals can stop coming in one fell swoop<\/strong><br \/><b\/>So I was nonplussed <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.penelopetrunk.com\/2015\/05\/03\/dave-goldberg-cause-of-death-i-think-its-suicide\/\">when I lost all my traffic from Facebook<\/a>. It was my top referring site and then overnight I got almost no traffic from Facebook. It was because I had a very very good source telling me that Sheryl Sandberg was telling lies about where she was when her husband died. Maybe we\u2019ll never know why she did that, but I have always thought she\u2019s a self-serving opportunist, and I hated her book, <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.penelopetrunk.com\/2016\/05\/11\/too-little-too-late-sheryl-sandberg-apologizes-for-lean-in\/\">which she later hated<\/a> so I don\u2019t mind losing the Facebook traffic because I was right. But I have to admit I had no idea how much traffic I got from Facebook until I didn\u2019t.<br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/><\/span><strong>No one\u00a0<em>really<\/em>\u00a0depends on one platform for their livelihood<\/strong><br \/><b\/>TikTok, like most platforms, has a low ceiling for how much traffic you can monetize. You don\u2019t get paid for more than 1 million views on TikTok, and the amount of work you need to get 1 million views is huge, so you need to get paid somewhere else to make it worth it. This means that if you had a huge following on TikTok and you didn\u2019t move those people somewhere to monetize them, then you didn\u2019t really have a business on TikTok but rather a dream of TikTok. So maybe you don\u2019t have to mourn so dramatically about the loss.<br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/><\/span>This is true with me and Twitter as well. Do you know how many sales I\u2019d make when I posted a link to my 100K followers? One or two. So unless I was selling real estate (I\u2019m not) it wasn\u2019t worth it to build up that big a following on Twitter.<\/p>\n<p>Each place you can build a following is like a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theuncomfortable.com\/#3d-visualization\">Katerina Kamprani<\/a> design to make life less comfortable.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.penelopetrunk.com\/cdn\/katerina-kamprani-uncomfortable-2-blogsize.png\" width=\"496\" height=\"330\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Influencer platforms look like they should be useful, but it\u2019s not like it appears: Everyone has something besides that platform if they\u2019re really supporting themselves.<br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/><\/span><strong>Being an influencer is the sweat shop labor of our millennium<\/strong><br \/><b\/>The platform isn\u2019t the problem. It\u2019s the lifestyle. You mourn the platform loss because you had to work so hard to build a following. You had to post all the time and you compromised your personal life to do it. Either you turned your own life into content, or you gave up having your own life in order to work nonstop. Either way, you\u2019ve sold your life to social media.<br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/><\/span>There\u2019s a reason the divorce rate is so high for influencers: you can\u2019t be present in your marriage and earning money from commenting on your marriage. And you lose your kids. If you can make money writing about your kids, you\u2019ll lose your kids like you lose a platform, because any sane teen begins refusing to participate in their parent\u2019s online antics. <span class=\"im\">I would know.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/><\/span><strong>Get more meaningful measures of success\u00a0<\/strong><br \/><span class=\"im\">I\u2019ve spent the last two years trying to figure out how to write without writing about my kids. It\u2019s been difficult. But what keeps me going is I love to write. And I love to experiment with ways to tell stories. <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.penelopetrunk.com\/2023\/06\/28\/love-letter-to-wikipedia-editor-agent-86\/\">That\u2019s how I started using the Internet<\/a> and that\u2019s why I\u2019m still here. <a href=\"https:\/\/readinglist.penelopetrunk.com\">I\u2019ve started writing flipbooks.<\/a> I have no idea how I\u2019ll ever make money from them, but they make me happy.\u00a0<\/span><br \/><span class=\"im\"><br \/><\/span>An influencer has to constantly learn new technology, constantly adapt to new platforms, and you lose your audience \u2013 many times.
