\u00a0Academy Award-nominated actor Jake Gyllenhall<\/a><\/strong> is one of the rare acting types who can star in both Roadhouse<\/em>, a remake of the classic Patrick Swayze<\/strong><\/a> film, and star on Broadway in Othello<\/em> opposite Denzel Washington<\/a><\/strong> within the span of a year. While it has helped him build an eclectic resume, it has also helped him grow as an actor in unexpected ways. In a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter<\/em><\/a>, Gyllenhall speaks about why he seeks roles that \u201cfreak\u201d him out and one crucial technique he picked up from starring in Road House<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Gyllenhall was born with a lazy eye that has since corrected, but he is virtually blind without wearing strong contact lenses (he has 20\/1250 vision). He believes this helps him as an actor, noting, \u201cI like to think it\u2019s advantageous. I\u2019ve never known anything else. When I can\u2019t see in the morning, before I put on my glasses, it\u2019s a place where I can be with myself.\u201d Notably, Gyllenhaal performed the scene in the 2015 boxing movie Southpaw <\/em>in which his character learns about his wife\u2019s death without his contact lenses to \u201c<\/em>force himself to listen more closely.\u201d<\/p>\n

As for what steers Gyllenhaal toward his projects \u2014 ranging from Zodiac<\/em> to Nocturnal Animals<\/em> to Spider-Man: Far From Home<\/em> to Road House<\/em> and more, he admits to picking roles that\u00a0\u201cfreak me out a bit<\/a>\u2026 The feeling I want to have is, can I do it? That it\u2019s going to ask of me things that I don\u2019t know about myself yet.\u201d<\/p>\n

For example, one of the things that Gyllenhaal didn\u2019t know that he could do was a classic \u201ctrailer line\u201d \u2014 the type of quips that a character says that end up featured prominently in a film\u2019s marketing. He explains,\u00a0\u201cTo deliver a line that goes into a trailer, with the right gusto and belief, and even with the absurdity of it, it\u2019s a mastery. There\u2019s that thing, the camera\u2019s pushing in and I\u2019m always like, \u2018Oh wow, this is when you see Bruce Willis<\/a><\/strong> do the line, the thing. And now I\u2019m doing the thing. Like, oh God.’\u201d It\u2019s a type of style that Gyllenhall had to make happen for a film like Roadhouse.<\/em> He continues, \u201cIt requires this ease, but focus. I\u2019m in awe of people who can do it.\u201d<\/p>\n
