SIGNAL TO NOISE RATIO \u2013 POSZYCIE<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n

Although the trio already formed in 2003, this is my first encounter with the Warsaw-based trio Signal To Noise Ratio<\/a>. <\/em><\/strong>Since its formation, the trio developed \u2018from early prog-rock and lo-fi experiments into the current ambient\/drone\/experimental incarnation\u2019.<\/em> Their 22 years of experience are combined in this album, which is a sonic surprise in different ways. <\/p>\n

The four tracks on Poszycie (which translates to \u2018sheathing\u2019) are exploring real-time musical dialogue and cross-cultural tuning systems in immersive long-form soundscapes<\/em>, and that is a perfect description. <\/p>\n

The first thing to note is that the instrumentation is mostly acoustic: guitar, flugelhorn, \u2018de-huntified\u2019 horn (Przemys\u0142aw Pi\u0142aci\u0144ski)<\/em>, drums (Adam Izaak Was\u0105\u017cnik)<\/em>, gongs, and a synthesizer to complete the setup (Maria Bia\u0142ota)<\/em>. Guest performers are Maja Baczy\u0144ska<\/em> playing standing bells on Pozornie w lesie nic si\u0119 nie dzieje<\/em> (\u2018On the surface, nothing seems to be happening in the forest\u2019), and the Warsaw Gamelan Orchestra <\/em>on Hadap ke Barat<\/em> (\u2018Facing West\u2019 \u2013 which was previously released in 2024 in combination with two slowed down versions).
The third track Wrzesie\u0144<\/em> (\u2018September\u2019) is a drone track presenting the amplified flugelhorn and the \u2018de-huntified horn\u2019 \u2018processed through custom Max delay algorithms and tube guitar amplification.\u2019 <\/em>
(I have no idea what a de-huntified horn is exactly \u2013 I only know that a \u2018hunting horn\u2019 is a horn without keys or valves. So maybe a de-huntified horn is a former hunton horn with valves? Tell me in the comments if you know more).
Tamta strona\/ta strona\/nigdzie <\/em>(\u2018That side\/this side\/nowhere\u2019) concludes the album with a trio improvisation exploring jazz-inflected non-metric rhythmic patterns. The use of the synth and guitar in this track feels rooted in early German Krautrock (to me).<\/p>\n

The four tracks \u2013 each around 15 minutes \u2013 are all very different yet share the same atmosphere. It is a unique and adventurous combination of unhurried improvisation, genre-defying instrumentation, and a refreshingly unconventional approach. <\/p>\n
