{"id":309667,"date":"2025-11-21T22:13:02","date_gmt":"2025-11-21T22:13:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peraltafinancing.com\/uncategorized\/how-to-talk-to-loved-ones-about-living-on-a-boat-no-texting-tacking\/"},"modified":"2025-11-21T22:13:02","modified_gmt":"2025-11-21T22:13:02","slug":"how-to-talk-to-loved-ones-about-living-on-a-boat-no-texting-tacking","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fivemor.com\/?p=309667","title":{"rendered":"How to Talk to Loved Ones About Living on a Boat. no texting &#038; tacking"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cAre you out of your mind!?\u201d Prepare for these words, because at least one loved one is bound to speak up, when you announce your liveaboard plans. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\">As they should.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Are you worried about what your family and friends might think, or say, or scream, when they hear about your idea?\u00a0<\/p>\n<nav class=\"wp-block-kadence-tableofcontents kb-table-of-content-nav kb-table-of-content-id6813_fcb9a5-d7\" role=\"navigation\" aria-label=\"Table of Contents\"\/>\n<p class=\"\">Perhaps they already have been gently, and not so gently, reminding you of the millions of dangers out there and of your, hm, lack of responsibility, \u201cThink about the kids!\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Here is a cool post about the most common concern:<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-wp-embed is-provider-no-texting-amp-tacking wp-block-embed-no-texting-amp-tacking\"\/>\n<p class=\"\">If this sounds familiar, you are not alone.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">When we shared our plan to live on a boat, we experienced both \u2013 encouragement and disbelief. While Joe\u2019s side of the family had a long history of sailing. My folks were far from any significant body of water.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">There were two kinds of boats my side of the family knew \u2013 the cruise ship and the small fishing boat (with oars). So, which one were we going to live on exactly?<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">For more FAQ you are likely to hear, read this:<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-wp-embed is-provider-no-texting-amp-tacking wp-block-embed-no-texting-amp-tacking\"\/>\n<p class=\"\">You can probably imagine that my parents and relatives were a bit shocked.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">But, we managed. And so did they, in their own way.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">While there is much you can do, here is what you should NOT do, because it won\u2019t help, trust me! And, of course, suggestions of how to address these issues. otherwise it would not be a very helpful post. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\">So, here are the concerns and questions you might hear:<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u201cWe are very worried about you.\u201d<\/h2>\n<p class=\"\">Do not tell them to relax!\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">They love you, which is why they are worried.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Instead \u2013 ask them what worries them and answer their questions. Validate their feelings and fears. You probably shared (and still do) many similar ones.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Arrange a time to sit down and talk about it. Pick a casual setting \u2013 maybe out to lunch. Avoid family dinners and \u201cheavy\u201d gatherings, you don\u2019t want unlimited time. You need to be able to talk and let them sleep on it.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u201cBut we have never heard of anyone living on a boat.\u201d<\/h2>\n<p class=\"\">Do not hand them a book about sailing.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">They do not care about someone else going mad.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Instead \u2013 you be that book. Tell them about the cool places you want to visit. Tell them about the plan for homeschooling (be careful about that one, because it is a whole another can of worms). Get them involved in your story.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Ask them about cool place they think you should visit, favorite countries, islands, continents\u2026 Give them the helm for just a bit. Assign them a few places to research for you, to help.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The more involved they become into your project, the more research and reading they will do, on their own.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Speaking of books, here are a few suggestions:<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-wp-embed is-provider-no-texting-amp-tacking wp-block-embed-no-texting-amp-tacking\"\/>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u201cThere are too many dangers out there. It is not safe.\u201d<\/h2>\n<p class=\"\">Do not tell them driving on I66 is far more dangerous than sailing. They are already worried, why add to it?<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Instead \u2013 Listen to their fears and explain how navigation and satellite tracking works. Assure them they will be able to always know your location (if you plan to share it).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Satellite trackers, Starlink, satellite messaging \u2013 there are many ways to stay in touch and update everyone these days. Also, reassure them that you will not be sailing alone. There are thousands of boats with families sailing around. You will seek out others and stay together for the most part, and definitely for longer passages.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Plan on following that promise, otherwise your kids will become tired of the adventure sooner than you wish.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">If you can and are willing to, you can hire a captain to help you during the long crossings. Half of our friends did that. This way there is an extra pair of adult, trained hands on board.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Here is a post about safety boating gear:<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-wp-embed is-provider-no-texting-amp-tacking wp-block-embed-no-texting-amp-tacking\"\/>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u201cWe don\u2019t get it. People are not meant to live on boats.\u201d<\/h2>\n<p class=\"\">Do not tell them they do not understand.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Really?! Do not pull a teen snap on your loved ones.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Instead \u2013 give them time, after following the steps above. Take them on your journey one step at a time. Break down their huge Unknown into small chunks and explain each one individually, simply and patiently.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">As you may know, I never fell in love with sailing, even though I loved living aboard. Maybe some of my pep talk can help?<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-wp-embed is-provider-no-texting-amp-tacking wp-block-embed-no-texting-amp-tacking\"\/>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u201cWe are worried about you swimming in unprotected waters.\u201d<\/h2>\n<p class=\"\">Do not tell them all about the habits of sharks \u2013 why mention sharks in the first place?<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Instead \u2013 listen to their questions and answer them. The shark ones will come up, they always do. When they do, feel free to help them understand how well-educated you are about sharks and how you do not plan on being stupid.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Here is a post to help you with sharks \ud83d\ude09<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-wp-embed is-provider-no-texting-amp-tacking wp-block-embed-no-texting-amp-tacking\"\/>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u201cHow in the world you came up with this idea!\u201d<\/h2>\n<p class=\"\">Do not give them an elevator pitch. Is that how long it took for you to accept\/come up with the dream?<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Instead \u2013 share that this dream has been researched for a long time and it will probably take them a while to get used to the idea.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">So, start early, talk frequently. Keep them in the loop. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Joe\u2019s dream took a while for me to accept:<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-wp-embed is-provider-no-texting-amp-tacking wp-block-embed-no-texting-amp-tacking\"\/>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u201cNothing you say will change our mind.\u201d<\/h2>\n<p class=\"\">Do not keep convincing them you are not crazy. Know when enough is enough.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Instead \u2013 let them figure it out on their own. Some will, and some wont. And you have to be OK with that.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">That\u2019s it. <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">To summarize:<\/h2>\n<p class=\"\">Living on a boat is wild, crazy and doable. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\">We have done it. Others have. The path has been walked over and over again. Beautiful dreams have been fulfilled. Tragic events have crushed others. As it happens in life. Nothing you do can guarantee a safe, secure and danger-free bubble.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">By the words of the world\u2019s most famous fish, \u201cWell, you can\u2019t never let anything happen to him.
