If you’re considering a career in HR or L&D, a CIPD qualification is one of the best ways to build your credibility and advance professionally. But one of the most common questions prospective learners ask is: How long does it take to complete a CIPD course? The answer depends on a few key factors – including the level of qualification, your study mode, and how much time you can commit each week.

The answer depends on the qualification level, your weekly availability, and whether you choose to study full-time or part-time. It also helps to understand two important measures used by CIPD and other regulated awarding bodies: Guided Learning Hours (GLH) and Total Qualification Time (TQT).

Explore: What is The ROI of CIPD Qualifications?

Guided Learning Hours (GLH) refer to the time you spend engaged in structured learning activities with guidance or supervision. This includes live webinars, workshops, tutor-led sessions, and interactive coursework.

Total Qualification Time (TQT) includes both guided learning and your own independent study. That means reading, preparing assignments, researching, and any additional practice or reflection time.

These metrics are used by CIPD to set consistent expectations for each qualification level. Knowing the GLH and TQT for your course gives you a clear idea of how much time you’ll need to invest overall.

Each CIPD qualification has a different duration depending on its complexity and depth. Here’s how long you can expect to study at each level:

Designed for those at the start of their HR or L&D career, this qualification is usually completed in 8 months on a part-time basis.

This makes it highly accessible for those balancing study with work or other commitments.

Ideal for those with experience in the field or in a supervisory role, Level 5 takes around 10 months part-time.

This level develops the skills needed to manage teams and lead HR or L&D projects with confidence.

This advanced qualification is aimed at senior professionals or those working toward Chartered CIPD status. The typical completion time is around 20 months part-time.

Due to its strategic focus, Level 7 involves in-depth research, critical analysis, and extensive independent study.

Explore: How to Choose the Right Qualification Level

Most learners choose to study CIPD qualifications part-time to fit around work. The durations listed above reflect this flexible format. However, if you have more time available, some providers offer intensive or full-time study routes.

Regardless of your chosen mode, it’s important to meet the GLH and TQT expectations, which ensure you gain both theoretical understanding and practical insight.

Explore: How to Study for a CIPD Qualification While Working?

Your weekly study time will vary based on the level of your qualification, but here’s a typical guide:

This includes both tutor-led sessions and independent work. A structured study plan with built-in flexibility, will help keep you on track, particularly at the higher levels.

Yes, with Avado, you can study online at your own pace within a set course duration. Learners who are highly motivated and can dedicate more weekly hours may be able to complete their course ahead of schedule.

That said, it’s important to keep in mind:

Alternatively, if you need more time, some providers offer support extensions particularly for Level 7 learners – so you can complete the course at a sustainable pace.

Whether you’re just starting out or aiming for senior roles, choosing the right provider makes all the difference.
