What is
\nFamily-Centered Patient Advocacy?<\/span><\/b><\/p>\nPeople who enter the healthcare system are too often
\nexpected to think straight and do more than is mentally, emotionally and
\nphysically possible.\u00a0 So, they may call
\non family or friends to assist them.\u00a0 The
\nfamily support person now needs help navigating the system to secure safe
\nmedical care and treatment for their loved one.\u00a0
\nThat is the Pulse Family-Centered Patient Advocacy (FCPA).<\/p>\n
The program was developed in 2005 by asking medical
\nprofessionals with roots in patient safety, what they would want their patients
\nand family members to know that would help them do their best in helping the
\npatient.\u00a0 Their responses became a book
\ncalled Family Centered Patient Advocacy, A Training Manual<\/i>.\u00a0 FCPA then expanded by combining other
\ninformation related to communication, bias, and actual advocacy experiences,
\nwith additional input from volunteers sharing their stories. It became a local
\ncourse given on Long Island three to four times a year in sessions of two to
\nfour hours.\u00a0 Growing more popular each year
\n\u2014 because we all learn from the experiences of others \u2014 over the years FCPA has
\ninvited guest speakers to share their expertise.<\/p>\n
Who should attend?\u00a0<\/b>Anyone who uses the health
\ncare system, no matter your level of knowledge. There will be many
\nopportunities to recognize where you can improve in communication as well as in
\nunderstanding how the system works. \u00a0Spouses, partners and friends have attended
\ntogether to learn how they can best help each other in their times of need.<\/p>\n
Why attend this year?<\/b>\u00a02025\u2019s
\nFamily-Centered Patient Advocacy for Safer Health Care is two full days of
\ninteractive learning and discussions. And at times we may even laugh at what we
\nare learning. Participants will have many moments of realization that they may
\nneed help in communication and need a better understanding of how the
\nhealthcare system works.\u00a0 Being a better
\nprepared patient or support person can easily lead to better outcomes in care
\nfor the patient, as well as addressing the needs of already overwhelmed
\nhealthcare professionals. You will not find a better price at any training
\nprogram.<\/p>\n
Each participant completing the
\nprogram can choose to be listed as a resource on the Pulse website.<\/p>\n
