Well, World Kindness Day
\nwas this week.<\/span><\/p>\n

And people. It.\u00a0 <\/span>Was.\u00a0
\n<\/span>Spectacular.<\/span><\/p>\n

I went into it not feeling
\nmy best.\u00a0 <\/span>Last weekend I had a 24-hour
\nbug, and I still have a cold that just will not go away.\u00a0 <\/span>So, my nose was running, I had a cough, but y\u2019all,
\nI could not let that get in the way of this holiday.\u00a0 <\/span>I mean, come on, it only rolls around once a
\nyear, right?\u00a0 <\/span>So, it was a \u201cfill your
\nfanny pack with Kleenex, put on your Kind is Cool hoodie, and let\u2019s roll!\u201d kind
\nof day.<\/span><\/p>\n

First up \u2013 put the big
\nsign out.\u00a0 <\/span>I loved the artwork this year
\nand was very excited to display it.\u00a0
\n<\/span>There was a prompt asking passersby to leave a note saying how they
\nwould make the world a kinder place.\u00a0 <\/span>We
\ngot some sweet ones, including this:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

If I see somebody being left out I will talk to them or invite them to join me.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

Next \u2013 GIFT CARDS!<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>We had 25 gift cards, 5 each to:<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>Home Depot, grocery stores (Safeway, Giant,
\nand Trader Joes), and Starbucks.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>Kind
\nneighbor Christy rang our doorbell at exactly 10 am, the time we had set for meeting.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>I wasn\u2019t quite ready but that worked \u2013 she had
\ntime to add her note to the board!<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>10:05
\nam and off we went to find CONSTRUCTION WORKERS!<\/span><\/p>\n

But first \u2013 a stop at the
\nhigh school down the street, the Career Center.\u00a0
\n<\/span>That was Christy\u2019s idea.\u00a0 <\/span>You see,
\nvery recently she was out jogging and got hit by a car! Not to worry \u2013 she is
\nok.\u00a0 <\/span>The car was going very slowly, but it
\nhit her and then KEPT GOING.\u00a0
\n<\/span>Grrrrrr.\u00a0 <\/span>That is not legal or
\nkind, nor is it the \u201cArlington way\u201d.\u00a0 <\/span>But
\nhere is the kind part:\u00a0 <\/span>a teacher from
\nthe Career Center saw what had happened and rushed over to talk to Christy and
\nmake sure she was ok.\u00a0 <\/span>He had been sweet to
\nher, and now we were going to return the favor by giving him a gift card and
\nwishing him a happy World Kindness Day.<\/span><\/p>\n

Only one glitch\u2026\u00a0 <\/span>She only knew his first name\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n

That\u2019s ok \u2013 we knew we
\ncould find him!<\/span><\/p>\n

We got buzzed into the
\nschool and while we were waiting for the receptionist to get to us, another
\nemployee asked what we needed.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe are looking for a
\nteacher here.\u00a0 <\/span>We have a present for
\nhim.\u00a0 <\/span>His name is Jason,\u201d Christy
\nexplained.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cOH!\u00a0 <\/span>Jason the PE teacher??\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

YESSSSSSSSSS \u2013 that\u2019s
\nhim!!\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Got it in one try!!\u00a0 <\/span>Just a couple of minutes later there came
\nJason.\u00a0 <\/span>As soon as he saw Christy he seemed
\nto recognize her.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHey!\u00a0 <\/span>How ARE YOU??\u201d he asked.<\/span><\/p>\n

She explained that she was
\nwell and why we were stopping by.\u00a0 <\/span>He was
\nvery happy to get a gift card, a bag of candy, and a postcard of the World
\nKindness Day art.\u00a0 <\/span>And I think he was
\neven happier that Christy had taken the time to come to say hello and that he could
\nsee her healthy and not shook up \u2013 the opposite of the day that they met a
\ncouple of weeks ago.<\/span><\/p>\n

Since the library was next
\ndoor, we decided to pop in there.\u00a0 <\/span>We
\nhanded out bags of candy quietly (it\u2019s a LIBRARY, you have to be quiet <\/span>\ud83d\ude0a<\/span> ), and as we
\nwere ready to leave I noticed a woman at a corner table on her phone.\u00a0 <\/span>We approached her and held out a bag of
\ncandy.\u00a0 <\/span>I could see she was crying.\u00a0 <\/span>Maybe she was having a bad day, maybe she had
\njust gotten bad news on the phone, I don\u2019t know.\u00a0 <\/span>But I DO KNOW that I have been the person
\ncrying in public before.\u00a0 <\/span>I have cried
\nwalking down grocery store aisles.\u00a0 <\/span>I have
\ncried in airports.\u00a0 <\/span>I have cried in
\ncoffee shops.\u00a0 <\/span>And I have had the
\nexperience of people seeing me \u2013 people NOTICING my tears \u2013 and making a
\nconscious decision to pretend they didn\u2019t see.\u00a0
\n<\/span>I decided years ago that any time I see a person crying in public, I will
\nnot look away.\u00a0 <\/span>I won\u2019t pretend it is not
\nhappening.\u00a0 <\/span>I will acknowledge the sadness
\nand pain.\u00a0 <\/span>I will relate.\u00a0 <\/span>So, I quietly asked, \u201cMay I give you a hug?\u201d
\nand her eyes said, \u201cYes, please.\u201d\u00a0
\n<\/span>Christy also gave her a hug.\u00a0 <\/span>I
\nhope that the hugs and the candy helped her day get a bit better.<\/span><\/p>\n

Next we headed out to find
\nconstruction workers, which is an easy task in our neighborhood since they are building
\na huge new high school and there is major road construction on Columbia
\nPike.\u00a0 <\/span>Each time we saw a construction
\nworker we approached with a handful of gift cards and gave them their
\nchoice.\u00a0 <\/span>It was so fun!!\u00a0 <\/span>They were happy and thankful (and also loved
\nthe candy bags).<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

Happy construction workers. They have been doing construction on “The Pike” for a very long time and I am sure get many complaints from angry drivers for the delays.\u00a0
It was fun to THANK THEM for their hard work.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

It took us about an
\nhour to hand out 25 gift cards.\u00a0 <\/span>As we
\nwalked back, we handed out the rest of the candy bags in our basket.\u00a0 <\/span>We passed the local grocery store as a woman
\nwas coming out with her cart.\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cHey, that
\nwas nice what you did.\u00a0 <\/span>Giving gift cards
\nto construction workers \u2013 that was really kind,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n

What a perfect example of
\nhow kindness affects more than just the person receiving it!\u00a0 <\/span>It affects the person GIVING the kindness (in
\nthis case, Christy and I). And it even affects the person WITNESSING the kind
\nact.\u00a0 <\/span>We had no idea that anyone was
\nwatching or noticing us as we talked to the construction crew.\u00a0 <\/span>But not only were they watching, they were
\nbeing inspired to go out into the world and spread kindness, too.<\/span><\/p>\n

It was a great day to be
\noutside in the sunshine (even though I was not feeling 100%).\u00a0 <\/span>I spent some time painting new chairs for the
\nupcoming Santa Project and working on things for the Little Yellow Free Pantry,
\nand then it was time for the next event \u2013 A BRIDGE BRIGADE!<\/span><\/p>\n

I had never been able to
\njoin a bridge brigade before but I love when I drive under them.\u00a0 <\/span>What happens is:\u00a0 <\/span>people stand on an overpass and hold huge
\nletters up to spell something out.\u00a0 <\/span>Drivers
\npassing by can read the message and honk approval.\u00a0 <\/span>I had been on the driving by side, but never
\non the holding signs side.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

But all that changed on
\nWorld Kindness Day!!<\/span><\/p>\n

We met up at 3:30 pm and got
\nto work.\u00a0 <\/span>Our letters spelled JUST BE
\nKIND.\u00a0 <\/span>One person also made a cute heart
\nto add to the display.\u00a0 <\/span>It was so
\nfun!!\u00a0 <\/span>Each time a car honked it gave us
\nmore energy!!\u00a0 <\/span>We got waves!\u00a0 <\/span>We got headlights flashed!\u00a0 <\/span>It was fabulous!!<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

JUST BE KIND! When we started, we didn’t have quite enough people to hold the letters but we
made do!<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

We also had a basket of
\ncandy bags to hand out to people walking by and stopped in cars.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>I tried that task for a while but after a few
\nrejections I gave up.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>But Charlotte, oh
\nCharlotte was NOT afraid of the rejections!<\/span>\u00a0
\n<\/span>While we held letters and waved at cars whizzing by underneath us,
\nCharlotte handed out candy bags to cars stopped at the red lights.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHey, I got a $10 donation!!\u201d
\nshe reported as she handed over the money.\u00a0
\n<\/span>\u201cAnd only ONE PERSON flipped me off!\u201d she said (as if that was a good
\nthing <\/span>\ud83d\ude0a<\/span> ).\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

We stayed until the sun
\nset and it got chilly.\u00a0 <\/span>By then I was
\nfeeling pretty crappy.\u00a0 <\/span>I had been going,
\ngoing, going all day and my energy was zapped.\u00a0
\n<\/span>My nose was runnier and my cough was worse.\u00a0 <\/span>But we had one more task for the day \u2013 a run
\nto the grocery store.\u00a0 <\/span>I still had the
\nbasket of candy bags in the car, so after we were done getting what we needed,
\nmy partner David suggested we take candy back in and hand it out to the Trader
\nJoe\u2019s staff.\u00a0 <\/span>What a great idea!!<\/span><\/p>\n

We walked around giving each
\nemployee a bag of candy and a World Kindness Day postcard.\u00a0 <\/span>It made them so happy!\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHey, you were kind to us,
\nwe want to be kind to YOU!\u201d two employees said as they handed us a bouquet of
\nflowers.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Kindness begets
\nkindness.\u00a0 <\/span>Kindness ripples.\u00a0 <\/span>They are everywhere!<\/span><\/p>\n

World Kindness Day.\u00a0 <\/span>A day set aside to remind us all that being
\nkind is important.\u00a0 <\/span>It is needed.\u00a0 <\/span>It is imperative.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

I like to think that
\neveryday is \u201cWorld Kindness Day\u201d at the Big Yellow House.\u00a0 <\/span>But even so, it is good to have one special
\nday marked on the calendar.\u00a0 <\/span>So, MARK
\nYOUR CALENDARS, friends.\u00a0 <\/span>November 13,
\n2026 will be World Kindness Day again.\u00a0
\n<\/span>Let\u2019s celebrate it together.<\/span><\/p>\n

P.S. \u2013 As I was writing
\nthis, someone knocked very quietly on our front door.\u00a0 <\/span>I answered it even though I am still dressed
\nin my red flannel pajamas and saw someone I didn\u2019t recognize was standing on
\nour porch.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cGood morning, can I help you?\u201d
\nI asked.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHi.\u00a0 <\/span>Yes\u2026\u00a0
\n<\/span>Ummm, I am new to Arlington.\u00a0 <\/span>I lived
\nin DC but just came here.\u00a0 <\/span>I am a
\nsubstance abuse counselor.\u00a0 <\/span>Just got
\nmyself a job here.\u00a0 <\/span>But I need some food,\u201d
\nthey said, standing next to a wagon full of amazing donations that someone left
\non our porch while I was still sleeping.<\/span><\/p>\n

I welcomed them to
\nArlington and asked about food likes, dislikes, allergies, how many people
\nneeded to eat, etc.\u00a0 <\/span>I learned that the
\nperson did not have housing yet but did have a vehicle.\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cGot a can opener??\u201d I questioned.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cNope.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cGo into 7-11 and use the
\nmicrowave?\u201d I clarified.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cYes ma\u2019am.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI got you,\u201d I told them.\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cAnd hey \u2013 do you want hot chocolate or
\ncoffee??\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

They sat on the porch as I
\nran down to gather food.\u00a0 <\/span>Because we have
\nhad so many donations lately, it was easy to find super tasty options.\u00a0 <\/span>I came back out to the porch with a basket so
\noverflowing that I had to get a back-up basket.\u00a0
\n<\/span>They gasped when they saw how much food there was.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHere.\u00a0 <\/span>You look through this while I make the hot
\nchocolate,\u201d I told them.\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cWhatever you
\nwant – put in this bag.\u00a0 <\/span>What you do not
\nwant leave in a pile here.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Oh, my goodness they were
\nhappy.\u00a0 <\/span>Thankful for the hot chocolate.\u00a0 <\/span>Grateful for the food.\u00a0 <\/span>Happy to get deodorant, wipes, and
\nlotion.\u00a0 <\/span>And a can opener.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cYou don\u2019t want this RICE?\u00a0 <\/span>Don\u2019t like rice??\u201d I asked when I saw the
\ncups of rice in the \u201cdo not take\u201d pile.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cNo ma\u2019am, I do like rice.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>But how would I COOK it?\u201d they asked.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIT IS COOKED!\u201d I told them
\nexcitedly.\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cYou can heat it and eat it
\nright out of the cup, or you can just eat it cold!\u00a0 <\/span>Hey \u2013 this pasta is already cooked, too!\u201d I showed
\nthem.\u00a0 <\/span>With this new information that the
\nitems were pre-cooked, they decided to take them.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cBut how will I EAT it?\u201d
\nthey wondered out loud.\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cI don\u2019t have a
\nbowl\u2026 I will figure it out.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWait!\u00a0 <\/span>I have that!\u00a0
\n<\/span>We got it for another guest but they haven\u2019t come for it yet.\u00a0 <\/span>Let me grab it.\u201d\u00a0 <\/span>And with that, they now have a plate, cup,
\nbowl, and 2 dishtowels that we had grabbed at Ikea.<\/span><\/p>\n

I asked how they had found
\nus.\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cWell, I needed food.\u00a0 <\/span>So I decided to ask my phone.\u00a0 <\/span>And it showed me THE YELLOW HOUSE and said I was
\nonly 5 minutes from here,\u201d they explained. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAhhh, you found us
\nonline!\u00a0 <\/span>You know, we tried to keep it
\nquiet and not get online\u2026\u00a0 <\/span>We are really
\nbusy and have a lot of people coming and we didn\u2019t want tooooo many people to
\nfind us.\u00a0 <\/span>But hey \u2013 someone put us online
\nand now we have 5-star reviews!\u201d I laughed.\u00a0
\n<\/span>Seriously though, we have 5-star reviews!<\/span><\/p>\n

I showed them the pantry
\n(which they had walked right past to get to our front door but hadn\u2019t noticed).\u00a0 <\/span>I explained that they could come anytime day
\nor night, and that the system is to take what you need and leave enough to
\nshare with others.\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cWe all have to take
\ncare of one another,\u201d I said.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cYes ma\u2019am.\u00a0 <\/span>Yes, we do.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

This person is a substance
\nabuse counselor.\u00a0 <\/span>Had a good job in DC,
\nbut lost it when the administration cut funding for vital programming.\u00a0 <\/span>Now they are starting over.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThanks for your work,\u201d I told
\nthem.\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cI have loved ones who have
\naddictions.\u00a0 <\/span>What you do is important.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThank YOU,\u201d they
\nsaid.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cYou are welcome here
\nanytime.\u00a0 <\/span>Keep coming back.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
