color: inherit; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;\">Liberty<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span>Island became a national monument under Franklin Delano Roosevelt, and Ellis Island was included in the site in the 1960s. During its heyday from the late 19th century until its closure in the 1950s, 12 million people were processed on Ellis island, and it is for many the symbol<span>\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"markl6y9i2u2x\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" style=\"border: 0px; color: inherit; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;\">of<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span>immigration in the United States. The<span>\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"markbl8otxjgk\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" style=\"border: 0px; color: inherit; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;\">Statue<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"markl6y9i2u2x\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" style=\"border: 0px; color: inherit; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;\">of<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"mark0nyphvf0t\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" style=\"border: 0px; color: inherit; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;\">Liberty<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span>plays a similar role. As Emma Lazarus\u2019s 1883 poem, \u201cThe New Colossus,&#8221; proclaims: Give me your tired, your poor,\/ Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,\/ The wretched refuse<span>\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"markl6y9i2u2x\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" style=\"border: 0px; color: inherit; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;\">of<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span>your teeming shore.\/ Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me,\/I lift my lamp beside the golden door!\u201d Indeed, the State<span>\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"markl6y9i2u2x\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" style=\"border: 0px; color: inherit; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;\">of<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"mark0nyphvf0t\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" style=\"border: 0px; color: inherit; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;\">Liberty<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span>seems to beckon across the ocean to oppressed people everywhere, and, for many the<span>\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"markbl8otxjgk\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" style=\"border: 0px; color: inherit; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;\">Statue<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span>is a symbol<span>\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"markl6y9i2u2x\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" style=\"border: 0px; color: inherit; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;\">of<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span>the hope for a new life in the United States.<\/div>\n<p>Yet both islands have quite separate histories and roles. Ellis Island was an actual port<span>\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"markl6y9i2u2x\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" style=\"border: 0px; color: inherit; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;\">of<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span>entry for millions, while the<span>\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"markbl8otxjgk\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" style=\"border: 0px; color: inherit; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;\">Statue<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"markl6y9i2u2x\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" style=\"border: 0px; color: inherit; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;\">of<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"mark0nyphvf0t\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" style=\"border: 0px; color: inherit; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;\">Liberty<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span>initially had nothing to do with immigration.\u00a0 In addition, both have at times symbolized the opposite<span>\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"markl6y9i2u2x\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" style=\"border: 0px; color: inherit; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;\">of<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span>immigration and hope\u2013exlcusion, racism, xenophobia and incarceration. In 2021, we received a grant from the National Park Service to work with interpretive materials on Ellis Island, and another grant from NPS through ASALH (the Association for the Study<span>\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"markl6y9i2u2x\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" style=\"border: 0px; color: inherit; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;\">of<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span>African American Life and History) to explore the meanings<span>\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"markl6y9i2u2x\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" style=\"border: 0px; color: inherit; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;\">of<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span>the<span>\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"markbl8otxjgk\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" style=\"border: 0px; color: inherit; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;\">Statue<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"markl6y9i2u2x\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" style=\"border: 0px; color: inherit; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;\">of<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"mark0nyphvf0t\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" style=\"border: 0px; color: inherit; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;\">Liberty<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span>for African Americans. Both<span>\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"markl6y9i2u2x\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" style=\"border: 0px; color: inherit; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;\">of<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span>these gave us the opportunity to examine alternative stories and experiences<span>\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"markl6y9i2u2x\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" style=\"border: 0px; color: inherit; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;\">of<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span>both Ellis Island and<span>\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"mark0nyphvf0t\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" style=\"border: 0px; color: inherit; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;\">Liberty<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span>Island, and both have resulted in two different\u2013but equally complex\u2013projects. In the case<span>\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"markl6y9i2u2x\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" style=\"border: 0px; color: inherit; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;\">of<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span>national monuments, the goal has<span>\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"markl6y9i2u2x\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" style=\"border: 0px; color: inherit; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;\">of<\/span>ten been to restrict them to a single set<span>\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"markl6y9i2u2x\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" style=\"border: 0px; color: inherit; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;\">of<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span>meanings and significations, but Ellis Island and<span>\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"mark0nyphvf0t\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" style=\"border: 0px; color: inherit; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;\">Liberty<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span>are much more than any single narrative.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>What brings these two projects together is an emphasis on community collaboration and multimodal anthropology. Both were made through our work a team<span>\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"markl6y9i2u2x\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" style=\"border: 0px; color: inherit; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;\">of<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span>scholars (including Samuel Collins, Matthew Durington, Monica Pelayo and Chayanne Marcano), and with Wide Angle Youth Media, a non-profit in Baltimore that instructs youth in multimedia production and seeks to address the many digital divides that persist in U.S. cities today.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Our goal for both was to open up that discourse to incorporate forgotten, suppressed and alternative meanings. It\u2019s worth pointing out that both<span>\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"markl6y9i2u2x\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" style=\"border: 0px; color: inherit; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;\">of<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span>these function as a commentary on other interpretive materials on the Monument, and our hope is that both open up other possibilities at a particularly fraught moment in U.S. history.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Ellis Island Encounters website is designed to be read in different ways. First, it presents Ellis Island according to a well-established chronology from pre-colonization to the present (\u201cHistoric Periods\u201d). These include Ellis Island in its heyday as a port<span>\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"markl6y9i2u2x\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" style=\"border: 0px; color: inherit; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;\">of<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span>entry (1892-1924), its transformation into a port<span>\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"markl6y9i2u2x\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" style=\"border: 0px; color: inherit; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;\">of<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span>deportation and a prison (1924-1954), and its afterlife in the U.S. imagination (1954-present). Second, the website presents \u201cStories<span>\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"markl6y9i2u2x\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" style=\"border: 0px; color: inherit; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;\">of<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span>Ellis Island.\u201d Taking our cues from the ways the site is interpreted, and the autobiographical narratives people have shared, the \u201cStories\u201d portion presents a variety<span>\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"markl6y9i2u2x\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" style=\"border: 0px; color: inherit; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;\">of<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span>thematic narratives that include personal experiences, incidents, and general themes.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The<span>\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"markbl8otxjgk\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" style=\"border: 0px; color: inherit; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;\">Statue<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"markl6y9i2u2x\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" style=\"border: 0px; color: inherit; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;\">of<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"mark0nyphvf0t\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" style=\"border: 0px; color: inherit; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;\">Liberty<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span>site is a collection<span>\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"markl6y9i2u2x\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" style=\"border: 0px; color: inherit; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;\">of<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span>short articles, archival materials and popular images, arranged into overlapping thematic clusters.
