\u201cGoodbye to All That\u201d is the title of an\u00a0autobiographical essay<\/a>\u00a0by Joan Didion. While I share very little of Didion\u2019s sentimental outlook at leaving New York in the mid-1960s, I\u2019ve always felt a strong affinity with the essay\u2019s title.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve always been one to say\u00a0adieu<\/em>: to projects and jobs, to places and dreams.<\/p>\n

And now, it\u2019s time for me to say goodbye to marketing.<\/strong><\/p>\n

At least for the next 2 years, for I\u2019m finally ready to take the leap of faith and focus on writing my debut novel.<\/strong><\/p>\n

It feels a little bit insane and a great deal scary<\/p>\n

It feels like the absolutely right thing to do.<\/p>\n

It feels like\u2026 Freedom and purpose, which I\u2019ve lacked for a long time.<\/p>\n

\n

On leaving marketing<\/h3>\n

There are two key reasons why I\u2019m leaving the marketing world for at least the next 24 months.<\/p>\n

Reason 1: I no longer enjoy working on marketing in its current AI era<\/strong>, where the sole goal is automation and efficiency. Meanwhile, creativity and integrity are as good dead. Perhaps, things will have (re)turned for the better in 24 months. I remain an optimistic pessimist.<\/p>\n

Reason 2: I find meaning and purpose in art, literature, poetry.<\/strong>\u00a0Reading, thinking, and writing make me feel that the real world, external to the screen, still exists. I\u2019ve been working on my debut novel for the past 3 weeks, and it makes me feel\u00a0grounded<\/em>, focused on one thing, instead of jumping between messaging apps.<\/p>\n

What about the ongoing projects & the Marketing Fix newsletter?<\/strong><\/p>\n

All my marketing-related projects are going into a looong hibernation. So there won\u2019t be any more Marketing Fixes for the foreseeable future.<\/p>\n

Also, I won\u2019t be taking on any new consultation projects.<\/p>\n

\n

So, what\u2019s next?<\/h3>\n

Some people go on jobbaticals. Some take breaks from work to have kids.<\/p>\n

All I want is to return to a world free of the always-on hustle and noise. To think, experience, and work on something meaningful.<\/strong><\/p>\n

I returned to London in early September with an idea for my debut novel. Since then, I\u2019ve been going to the British Library five days a week.<\/p>\n

Writing a novel is like having a full-time job,\u00a0<\/strong>and I can\u2019t remember the last time I felt so inspired and determined.<\/p>\n

And so, I decided to use my savings to buy 24 months of freedom.<\/p>\n

Not to \u201chang out\u201d or travel, but to work harder than ever.<\/p>\n
